Chapter 2

Mrs Snape knocked at Tobias' door impatiently.

"Toby, wake up," she called out. "You'll get late for school. "

Tobias Snape hated his life. Mr Snape was an skilled architect who had his own architectural firm and had amassed a fortune. And Mrs Snape was a famous lawyer. Despite being exceedingly wealthy, nobody could understand why the Snapes chose to shift their residence to Spinner's End.

"Its very much tranquil over here," Mr Snape said. And Mrs Snape found it easy to concentrate on her work in this peaceful locality. But, neither of them thought of eight-year old Tobias. Tobias, though, liked it that way. He hated the constant fussing and he also hated this locality. No one wanted to be his friend here. All the children here thought that Tobias was as snobbish as his parents. He spent his time sketching birds in his garden.

Tobias got out from his bed reluctantly. Apart from Spinner's End, the other place he absolutely detested was his school. Even over there, children didn't want to talk to him. The other day, he smiled at a seven- year old girl but the smile that she returned was a forced one.

"Toby," his mother called out again.

"Coming, mother," Tobias said. "And don't call me Toby," he added under his breath.

Tobias dressed up hurriedly and went down to the dining hall. He sat down as the doorbell rang. The butler, George, went and opened the door and Tobias saw his neighbour, Mrs Prince standing there with a loaf of bread in her hand.

"You are again late in bringing the bread today, Mrs Prince," Mrs Snape said, not looking at her. "Do you expect my son to go hungry to school everyday?"

Mrs Prince looked down at her feet. "I'm sorry, Mrs Snape," she apologised. "I had to get my daughter ready for school." Just then, George entered the dining hall with a tray full of fresh fruits.

"Very well," Mrs Snape waved her away. "Don't be late tomorrow."

Tobias cringed at this very obvious show of wealth by his mother. He immediately made up his mind to find out about Mrs Prince's daughter and be her friend, whether she liked it or not.

Chapter 3

Twelve-year old Merope did not see the slap coming and fell down on the floor, rubbing her cheek. And as she started to get up, a kick landed on her side.

"Such a shame, such a shame," Marvolo Gaunt muttered under his breath as his son, Morfin, continued to assault his sister. "A Squib in the noble house of Slytherin. What are we to do with her now?"

The Gaunts had just received a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry stating that Merope Gaunt had been expelled from the school as she was a Squib.

"But, Father. I can't help it," Merope wailed but her pleas fell on deaf ears. She tried to block the blows with her hands but to no avail.

Merope never liked Hogwarts. She was an outcast. Nobody spoke to her. And as a result, she had no friends. In the classes, she was unable to cast a single spell nor brew any potion. The teachers had given up on her and when they discovered that she was a Squib, they finally got the oppurtunity to expel her.

The expulsion was an embarrasment for the Gaunts as they were the direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin. Marvolo and Morfin started thinking of ways to hide the fact from their extended family who would, undoubtedly, seize the opportunity to taunt and humiliate them.

"Now go in and don't show your face unless called for," Marvolo snarled. Merope started to walk but stopped in her tracks. She stared outside the window.
She had just seen him.

Chapter 4

"Hello," Tobias said, extending his hand towards the petite looking girl. She took it in her and shook it nervously.

"I'm Tobias," he said. "Tobias Snape." And he smiled down at her.

"I'm E...Eileen Prince," Eileen stammered, staring up at Tobias.

Tobias chuckled at the nervous look on her face. "Don't worry," he said. "I won't eat you up."

That broke the ice. Eileen giggled and offered her lunch box to Tobias.

"Would you like to have some cakes?" she asked. "My mother baked them."

"Sure," Tobias replied and picked up a cake. "Oh...you are Mrs Prince's daughter. She brings bread for us every morning."

Eileen looked down at her feet and didn't say anything. Like always, her family's poverty rankled her. Nobody wanted to speak to her. And when she saw Tobias Snape approaching her, she was automatically and understandably nervous. She had heard stories about his family's snobbish behaviour and she had assumed that Tobias would be the same. Even though Tobias had smiled at her a couple of days back.

Tobias sensed her uneasiness and slipped a hand around her shoulders.

"Come," he pushed her towards a small group of students. "Hey...look here," he called out to them.

"Who's this?" one of the boys asked Tobias.

Tobias pushed Eileen forward. "This is Eileen Prince," he told his friends. "And she's my new friend. Our new friend."

One of the girls stared at Eileen, much to her discomfort. "Isn't she the cobbler's daughter?" she asked.

Eileen wanted to be anywhere but there. The feeling of humiliation grew with each passing minute. But Tobias, reading her thoughts, held on to her hand tightly

"Yes," Tobias answered for her. "But she's our friend now so be nice to her."

"It was just a question," the girl said and walked up to Eileen. "Hello Eileen," she said and smiled. "I'm Elizabeth." The others in the group smiled at her too. Tobias was relieved.

The smiles were warm and genuine and Eileen felt at ease once again.

She finally had friends.

"Thank you, Tobias," Eileen said, walking back home with her new best friend.

Tobias looked at her. "For what?" he asked.

"Friends," she replied. "Never had a single one until today."

Tobias smiled. "I had to work hard to make some friends over here," he said. "I didn't want you to go through that."

Eileen looked up at him, a curious look on her face. "But why?" she asked.

Tobias chuckled. "Oh c'mon, Eileen," he said. "Everyone thinks I am snobbish. Like my parents."

Eileen was horrified to hear Tobias talk about his parents in that manner. "Oh well..." she stuttered.

Tobias slipped his hand in hers. "Eileen," he said, looking at her. "I'm not like them. I don't want to be like them either. I want to have friends. Friends like you. To whom I can be myself and not the heir to the Snape fortune."

Eileen was stunned by this little sermon by Tobias. But she recovered soon enough and smiled up at him.

"Did you like those cakes?" she asked him. Tobias nodded. "I'll get some more for you tomorrow."

Chapter 5

Merope scrambled from one window to the other, trying to catch a glimpse of the boy who just passed by on a horse carriage.

Just then, Morfin yanked at her hair and swivelled her roughly on to a chair.

"Who are you ogling at?" Morfin snarled. Merope tried to protest but a slap from Morfin sent her sprawling down on to the floor.

"Here we are trying to think on how to hide this dreadful matter and save our reputations and this girl stares at that Muggle boy so shamelessly," Marvolo growled.

"No father...I was just..." Merope spoke up feebly but Marvolo cut her short.

"Shut up!" Marvolo snarled. "Now get up and go to your room."

Merope hung her head and trudged back listlessly to her room.

"That's one strange house," Tom remarked. " So strange. It gives me the chills."

Mrs Riddle laid a warm, reassuring hand on her son's shoulder.

"Don't look at it, Tom," she said softly. But Tom couldn't take his eyes off the house.

"I've never seen anyone coming and going from that house," Tom remarked. "Yet the house doesn't look abandoned. I wonder who stays there."

"Forget about it, Tom," his mother said firmly. "Don't get yourself into any more trouble. I'm fed up with all the complaints that I receive from your school authorities."
