J.K. Rowling: Greatest Living British Writer?

In conjunction with the launch of The Book Magazine, a new "quarterly national consumer magazine," they are conducting a vote to ask the public who they believe is the greatest living British writer. Along with such writers listed as Ian Rankin, John LeCarre, Terry Pratchett, Helen Fielding, Salman Rushdie and AS Byatt, is Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. In an articleabout this vote, they write :

"The notion of literary greatness is probably best called to account, however, by none other than the woman who has already destroyed all the boundaries within which we like to corral our writers and artists. Joanne Rowling. Harry Potter's creator has, without question, done more for literacy, for books and, indeed, for the perception of this country around the world than any writer, ever. Full stop! If The Beatles had a literary equivalent, J K Rowling is it. But, do sales of 300 million copiesof her books make her great? Does it really matter?"

Goblet of Fire Gets Two Empire Awards Nominations

The nominations for the annualEmpire Awardshave been announced, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has been recognized in two categories from the popular magazine this year. Goblet of Fire was nominatedas "Best British Movie" and in the "Best Sci-fi/Fantasy" category as well. These awards will be presented on Monday, March 13 in London, England. Congratulations!

Two Harry Potter Actors Receive OBE Awards

Previously it was announcedthat two actors from the Harry Potter films would be among those made Officers of theOrder of the British Empire, a special award presented by the Queen of England. Today actor Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and actress Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge in Phoenix) received their honors. TheBBC reportsthat:

Both Coltrane and Staunton - shortly to appear together in the fifth instalment of the Harry Potter franchise - played down the achievements that brought them their honours.

"Once you've been doing anything for 25 years people start to notice you," joked Coltrane, best known for his role in TV drama Cracker.

Congratulations to them both! Filming for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has begun in England, and the film is scheduled for release in 2007.
