Nikhil's family is perfectly portrayed as the kind of superficially Westernized family where feudal attitudes tumble out as soon as you scratch the surface even a little bit. Today's masterful scene was the one where they discuss ways to annul Nikhil's wedding, oblivious of his presence, not even once asking him what he thinks of the entire business.
For them, it is the most normal and natural thing to make decisions about the life of their adult son without his consent, doing as they see fit. If this is not a feudal mindset, I don't know what is.

At least Laajo's poor rural parents were under enormous societal pressure to get their daughter married off and even then, her consent was tearfully sought by them (yes, pressure was applied, but they didn't dismiss her opinion completely).

Yep those very gaonwaley for whom this so-called "modern" family has so much contempt. For these people, anyone outside their social class ceases to exist as a person whose desires, honour and dignity matters.

My favourite scene though was the one where a hungry Laajo discovers the laddoos that her mother had packed for her and cries thinking of her family. Anyone who's ever had to leave their family, move to a distant land with lovingly packed mementos by beloved family members would so empathise. I felt a tug in my heart for Laajo.

I don't care if the falling TRPs mean this show would not last too long. If they can keep doing what they are doing now, and not give in to the temptation to pander to TRP numbers, they'll create a product that people would be able to rewatch again and again in years to come.

Great post!

That scene with Lajo eating her mom's laddoos was the best in my opinion as well. It was executed beautifully!! It makes me want to applaude 👏the actress for pulling it off so well but make me want to cry 😭 for the character herself.

As for Nikhil's family, to me what I found interesting in the whole thing was all the discussion and possible solutions/decisions only seemed to come from Barka and her side of the family (aka her mom and brother). Inder and his brother seem to have no say in the family discussion other than the fact to conclude that the marriage is in fact legal. You would think you would get more out of these 2. Seems like Barka and her mom run this household...

Nice post Swati.. And I agree! I just watched the episode & I did discover the same thing! No matter how "modern" Laajo's saas may look- she ultimately brought her brother and mom along to decide on her son's fate! Maayka first, ehhh? And Nikhil's Naani, instead of keeping her nose out of their personal matter- decided to jump in and even taunted her own beti with- "kahin umar bharr ke liye pachtaana naa pade"... 😕😊 New jewelry & latest hairdos cannot bring modernity in ones thought process and Laajo's saas proved it! Yes, this saas- bahu ka relationship will be depicted in an upper-class household in New Delhi but will it differ from other shows which portray the jalli kattti baatein from a traditional saas to her bahu? I guess only time will tell.. 😊
I liked Nikhil taking a stand and announcing he'd not allow Laajo to go back! I also liked the fact he didn't argue and decided to stay quiet when all of them were busy taking MATURE decisions for him! 😛

True. Better a story narrated well for 100 episodes than 1000 episodes with unnecessary twists and turns. So far I totally like how they are telling this story and the attention they are giving to each and every character.

Sana does vulnerable yet strong very well. I'm surprised it took this long for people to recognise her talent for pulling off a leading role. Excellent casting choice.

Great analysis Chiks!! How very odd that she decided to cart over her entire family and lord over the son who she otherwise emotionally neglects. And I think you are spot on - though the milieu is different and the saas has a chic haircut, her attitude towards the woman who is now her bahu is just the same - her existence and desires are completely dismissed.

Perhaps these would not be the same jali katti baatein, but in essence the effect would be the same - to tell the bahu that her existence in this family is marginal at best.

Nikhil was sensible and so were his younger siblings - they clearly love him a lot!
