"Whoso loves believes the impossible": Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Arpita asks RV for the chance to reform her husband. RV gives her glance full of pity and said it's too late...I know you love him, and he loves you, but he is a criminal.... Arpita doesn't give up, her faith in her husband unwavering as is her belief in his goodness and humanity.
RV, though coming across hard and unyielding is not unsympathetic to her plight, his embarrassment obvious as she falls at his feet...As he sends her away, a sad and compassionate look descends on her face and he calls her back to say act quickly or you will cry for the rest of your life.
"Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be":Robert Browning
Arpita slowly enters the haveli hoping not to be seen. Her worst fears come alive as bhauj, panditji and Avdesh come up to her. The look on Avdesh's face rivets her and draws her eyes like a magnet to his burning ones. Behind him stood, bahuji, her face set. Once again Avdesh stood between the two women in his life.
"Where have you been?" He asks softly, advancing slowly and gracefully like a tiger getting ready to pounce....They stare at each other oblivious to anyone else. As Arpita remained mute, Bhauji filled in the details fanning Avdesh's rage to an inferno....."Begging for my life? My woman begging, why?.......tell me why you did this?" He yelled as he held on tight to her...Arpita jumps in fear and then bursts into tears, her eyes never leaving her husband's even in the face of his black rage.
In that moment, she looked the young girl she was, her face crumpled with anguish and fear, eyes flowing with tears as she looked at the man she loves. Her voice trembles with the force of her emotions as her secret pain came tumbling out in the open.
"Because I'm your wife!" She bursts out. A slight softness changes Avdesh's face even as his remains angry. "I can't see you dead...I am constantly worried about you...for your life I would do anything." Avdesh looks stunned at her words. He never blinks as he looks at her, noticing the tears, the worry and the anguish. He follows her as she slowly, halting walks past and stops before turning back to him. "Because I love you...and to save that love I went to your enemy....for that love I went against my father." She looks at Avdesh, sobs still shuddering through her as she let her fears spill over, the secret hurt that has been haunting her and eating her up. "You think and decide whatever you want but you can't stop me loving you." Avdesh's face softens further as her words seep into him till they wrap around his heart...warming him. "For whatever mistake I made, please forgive me," She walks forward sobs still racking her, her eyes on her husband (behind Arpita bhootni smiles wryly, she has lost she knew),. 'Don't ask me to keep a distance this time....I love you Avdeshji, your anger keeps me sleepless at night...I'm your wife!" She cries out helplessly, her agony at their situation out at last. "I have the right to share your sadness and happiness!" (behind her Bhootni looks up sharply, going on alert).
Avdesh never takes his eyes of his wife, all throughout her heartbroken words he had been riveted and as he finally knew her secret pain, the hurt and agony she had kept concealed from him.... Love poured and warmed his inside, mellowing the rage in him. His face reflected the change within him and he stepped forward, hands reaching out to her, his wife.. to offer comfort and shelter her in his arms, his need strong. Just as he was about to touch her, a hard voice spoke and then bhauji came between them...the outsider in their intimate circle.
"You have the right....but no one has the right to make babuaji weak." She states flatly, eyes as unblinking as poised snake. .....Avdesh looks at his wife, a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes as he stood between his old way of life and the offering of the new one...Bahuji continues. "The doors of the haveli is strong, because of babuaji's strength. This khandan's maan, maryada all kept safe because of babuaji....if today people come crying and falling at our feet, it is because of fear of babuaji." (Arpita looks stunned as she briefly met Bhauji's eyes before looking away). "You have no right to make babuaji weak!"
Arpi and Avdesh continue to look at each other as bhauji's words reverberate between them, Avdesh looks sad for a moment and he then turns and walks off....Arpi looking after him....Bhauji takes the opportunity to twist the knife in a bit, her revenge for Arpita winning over Avdesh's fury. She taunts Arpita about throwing her parents izzat and now her man's. Nothing knew to her...Bhauji taunts angrily.
My thoughts:
This has been an extremely emotional episode because we finally got to see the agony, the heartache and the paralysing fear Arpita has been living with. We knew that she loves Avdesh very much and today Avdesh got to see how much and the lengths she will go to protect him and keep him safe. I am so glad Arpita did not hesitate to speak the truth and unburden her pain. It touched a chord in her husband and he melted at her words. He will remember and recall these words for a long time, if not the rest of his life for they were the truth.... The very reason for her existence.
Today there was a slight power shift. Bhauji has lost some grounds to Arpita, because of her love for Avdesh. I have always said Bhauji can never understand their love and she showed it today.... Instead of Avdesh being so blinded with fury and hurting or worse kicking Arpita out as she wanted, he understood Arpita's action because they were born out of love and he got over his fury seeing her heartache....seeing how much pain he is putting her through when he wanted anything but.... Bhauji can never understand the love they share it will see them through pain, heartache and worse...because both cling to that love for the strength to go on.....Arpita was bold, she reminded Avdesh of who and what she is to him... His one and only love...wife... the one person in the world who would do anything for him and ask for nothing in return except for his wellbeing.
What is even more interesting, as soon as bhauji knew she lost, she immediately launched into her own speech, the opposite of everthing Arpita stands for. Where Arpita's words were of love, caring and the need to put him before herself, Bhauji's words were all about blood, violence, guilt and the usefulness of Avdesh ' no words about caring at all for the individual in question.
Avdesh is once again torn by what Arpita represent and the tantalising future with her, though the ties of the past still has a ironhold on him. Yet today, that tie has bent a bit, maybe even snapped because Arpita has a firm hold on her husband's heart....he will now try to fulfil his vow, so he can move forward and banish his wife's fears...so that together they can have the future they so yearn for.
Well what did you all think?
