TRPs. They never let anyone live in peace do they? The channel is always hungry for these ratings while we get more and more anxious about the show ending. I was trying to rack my brains to understand why a beautiful show like Gulaal is not getting TRPs while other dramas which are showing the same memory loss, miscarriage storylines are catching eyeballs. I was trying to fathom how a show with the most talented actors is being ignored while actors with one expression are getting nominated for award ceremonies only because their show is high on the trp chart.

Then I asked myself, why do movies like 'Welcome' do much better business than movies like 'Dor' or 'Swades'? It seems to me the Indian audience looks for escapism everywhere which is fair enough because after a hard day of work you want to watch something which doesn't really test your brain.

I have to admit, I have seen LOTS and LOTS of Indian dramas for different reasons but never have I been able to look so deeply in to characters as I have with Gulaal and Kesar. In fact the show in its entirety is like a novel. I think that is the reason why the show hasn't grabbed the attention it deserves. This show makes you THINK because no scene is put in there for mere entertainment purposes. How many times have young people like us on I-F enjoyed the typical 'hero pushing heroine against the wall'? No matter how many times we watch it on different couples, we enjoy it (Well I never really awaited those scenes but generally people enjoy them). We get that instant reaction 'Oh thats so hot, look at how he's grabbing her'. But how many times has that aggressive behaviour actually happened with a reason? Usually its just put in there just to excite the audience. However, for the first time during that night scene where Kesar barged in to Gulaal's room...I just knew that he had to do something to pull her closer because it wasn't just about getting physical. He had been craving her emotionally for so long that something was about to burst. For the first time it didn't feel like that this kind of scene was put in just for the sake of it.

Just the other day I saw a hero pulling the heroine close up to him and it was only their first interaction. Is that what actually gets the audience going? Jo dikhta hai wohi bikhta hai. I don't think the Indian audience want to sit their analysing scenes when they could enjoy a memory loss track which requires no thinking whatsoever 😃

In my opinion, Gulaal is a victim of its own beauty and depth. Any views? I've written too much! Sorry...!

Each one of us go through this phase when we get attached to a particular show, especially for viewers who look for some unique concept in a show. I have crossed this state. Its not just SP, its everywhere. If you have an FB account, please read through my views in these two topics. You will realise my earlier frustration that channels just don't care about anything and TRPs rule the business.Requesting all of you with an FB account to please add up your views here. Not that it will have a drastic effect. But nevertheless an attempt it can be.

Exactly Reemz
I get that some serials need to be the typical saas bahu, cheesy romance and so on - but a show like Gulaal deserves so much more and understanding to it, its a shame - ppl dont see it and analyse it and appreaciate it and so on
I have said that when i watch this show and then other shows, you can see so much difference in acting and quality of this show, that other show just lacks in it, this show and actors are one of the best on tv right if not the best

Gulaal is defenitly different form all other shows.it has a unique beauty, the beauty which our audiance never tried to understand

TV programmes r just a source of entertainment for the general public,i think they dont want to take any extra effort to think about something shown on tv,when most of the people today have some tensions and problems in their personal life.so they r searching for something which they can just watch and enjoy.nothing else.
And i am really happy about the current Trp of gulaal, common yaar competing with the saas bahu dramas in india is not easy

I can't answer for the success of the hero grabbing heroine in a manly way routine😊, but I have a few thoughts on what works and what doesn't.

IMO, a long plotline works. The anticipation of some (mostly romantic) resolution works very well. Like the ever present promise of Ahem falling in love with Gopi (Saathiya) or Krishna finally getting Pratigya to love him (MKAP) or how Suhana finally comes to accept Ishaan (S Genda Phool).

These are not the only elements of the show - they diversify majorly into comedy, drama, melodrama, domestic drama etc as side tracks to keep storytelling balls in the air but what keeps viewers coming back is THE PROMISE and the CERTAINTY of the resolution. There is no two ways about it and intelligent creatives know when to deliver on that promise - the timing is important too.

On the other hand, only a theme works too - Ye Rishta, for instance. It clearly does NOT have a plotline but commits itself to examining the ups and downs of a relationship and it works.

The problem with Gulaal:
1) Initial pacing
2) squandering of interesting stories and elements - the Vasaal love story, the magic realism elements, the rivalries between villages etc
3) Far too much lag after Vasant's death - too too dreary without a hope in sight.
4) Lack of one clear direction for the narrative - will Kesar persuade Gulaal to love him? Will Vasant come back? What about Talli? THEREFORE lack of trust on part of the viewer that this is the outcome I want and this is what will happen.
5) Competition - if Pavitra Rishta wasn't on at 9, people may ahve given Gulaal a chance but unluckily competition is too strong and Gulaal never managed to wrest the advantage.
6) Star Plus, which only supports winners - mindboggling logic - surely your weaker soaps need support and pushing, not ones that are already delivering for you. But hubris and egos rule even top managers, I suppose.

Just my two bit, because I loved GUlaal when it started and think it still rocks for sheer quality. But that's not enough - people need to engage emotionally, worry, think, hope, argue about the serial. I hope Star Plus winds it up well, that's all.

Yea, I think a serial titled Kajal on sony entertainment had a similar track. An angry young buisness man Dev Prathap Sing and a middle class girl Kajal. First hatred, then love, then death of the lead role, then come back .

I agree about the lack of one direction. We're still not clear what the story is aiming at. The creatives need to put their focus in to one solid route, promote it and go along with it. Sometimes they spend too much time on scenes which don't actually move the story anywhere (although they are amazingly written.

Yesterdays Kesar-Dushyant scene was beautiful but it was similar to the one Kesar had with PaanBa and the result was the same too. Kesar starts regretting but then the very next minute something happens which changes his mind. If you're going to spend so much time on scenes like yesterday then they need to make a difference (maybe they will in the long term).

That gripping factor is missing, I agree. We know how angry Kesar is, we know how dumb Talli is and we know how confused Gulaal is. It doesn't need to be highlighted anymore, these emotions need to evolve especially from Gulaal's side. Hopefully this new twist of Kesar agreeing to marry Talli brings more highpoints.

@Meysimi: Thank you for linking me to the FB thread. I will definitely get my viewpoint across there too.

And thank you to the rest. I agree with you all needless to say ;)

hey reemz,

Agree with u..dat people..doesn't want to use their..brain..after working whole day at office..and romance..arrh..Is dat something..to attract d people...h can u watch..those romantic scenes..sitting with ur..family?In a recent soap on SP they are desperately trying to get viewership..by showing stupid romantic promos(after watching dat I was like..🤢).
I doubt h many of d teenagers..will like to watch saas.bahu..dramas..I can't stop laughing..when I see a saas-bahu..saga..Ur MIL will put u to death(expression)..if a glass was broken by u..😡
A memory loss track..I think people will like dis concept..coz their is nothing logical..n u have to just laugh among with them..😲
I have tired long back watching PR..d story is always...revolving in circles..😕
But I still cant get d concept of TRP..why people will be attached to a particular show?
For Gulaal...it needs proper promotion..by SP..because the story line has changed..n It really has wonderful cast..👏
