Part 13 I Give Up

As Guddan chatted away with Dadi about how amazing their room is, a knock on the door pulled AJ out of his thoughts and he opened the door. It was Vikram Singh.

"Sir, ma'am...the dinner's ready, shall I have it delivered in the room or would you like to join others at the table, he enquired.

"I'll have it in the room

"I'll have it outdoors

Vikram looked at the duo surprised, as they glared what seemed like sharp daggers at each other. "So what will it be? He asked once again.

"She'll be eating outside

"He'll be eating here

And Guddan and AJ looked at each other again making Vikram's eyebrows raise in amusement. Such an interesting pair!

"Speak for yourself! Both shouted in unison at each other, their eyes narrowing at each other.

Vikram left stealthily not wanting to pose as disturbance in the glaring contest that husband-wife duo were engaged in. Once he was gone, Guddan pouted at AJ and rushed past him, out of the room for her dinner.

The cold breeze of night in combination with the flames erupting from bonfire enamoured Guddan's fascination beyond measures as she hugged the shawl closer to her frame. Looking around, a large group of tourists were gathered around the fire, celebrating love, life and family. She smiled and closed her eyes to feel the freshness of the breeze.

Aur ek taraf wo uncle! Sade hue kele ke chilke ki tarah andar room mein sadd rahe hain' She shook her head, sighing at his gruffness. That man was definitely mistakenly created because he had all the elements of surp..no, shock. Bin baat ka ghussa, Bin baat ka jhagda, bin baat ka rob, bin baat ka haq or vo rare occasions wali heart dropping smiles, when his eyes would be pooling with various shades of loneliness and sadness.

As the waiter set down a thaal in front of Guddan, her mouth watered at the local delicacies of ker sangri and gatta curry. God, she was ravenous, she realized at the sight of the exquisite food and started wolfing down the contents with no regards to manners or her surroundings, occasionally glancing at the singers who were enchanting the guests with their serene voices. The stillness of the night was being beautifully challenged by their high octave voices and it was an experience, worth every trouble...

As a wolf howl echoed across the deserts issuing a challenge to the moon, AJ's eyes snapped open. Rubbing his eyes to break the spell of drowsiness, he switched on his phone to see the time. It was 2 am. As his sleepy eyes darted over to the opposite side of bed, his brows furrowed in shock to see that Guddan was not there.

"Ye ladki kahan gayi hai... He spoke to no one in particular and getting up on his feet called out for her, "Guddan. No response came except the occasional hoots of owls and chirping of cicadas.

Putting his spectacles on his nose, he stepped out of the room to be hit by a wave of freezing chills. Shuddering, he quickly went inside and once he had secured himself a shawl, AJ stepped outside in search of the trouble named, Guddan Akshat Jindal.

As he surveyed the area, his eyes fell on the camels that were grunting away to glory and a bonfire, whose flames were slowly approaching their demise.

Where did this girl go?!' He thought helplessly and decided to check in the palace when he heard some voices. Trailing the voice beyond the tents into a secluded area where a lone camel was running its mouth, he saw her snuggled against the camel as if it was her pet. Akshat approached her with long strides, ready to lecture her about time management but Guddan remained blissfully oblivious as she gazed at the stars above that were twinkling, with mischief.

"Aur mummy, aapko pata hai... Guddan was continuing with her conversation when AJ blocked her view of the stars, replacing it with his eyes, twinkling dangerously.

"What are you doing here!?He asked incredulously.

"Dekhiye, its 2 in the night toh aap apni ye 12 baje wali shakl dikhakar, meri aur mummy ki baton mein interfere mat kijiye! Guddan warned, and shifted her position so that stars were in her view once again.

"Yahi hai mummy, aapke jamai, the AJ uncle! Guddan announced making a sour expression towards the sky. AJ turned around puzzled, to see if anyone was actually there and the only company he had was of Her and the camel.

"Kisse baat kar rahi ho!? He asked highly confused.

"Apni Mummy se, aap na humein disturb mat kijiye! Ek toh vese hi Indore mein itna pollution hai ki stars dikhte nhi aur aaj jab dikh rahein toh aap... Guddan shook her head at his clueless face.

"Ye tum kya bakwa... AJ was interrupted as Guddan continued.

"It has been a month since I last talked to my mother, vo wali mummy nhi, meri asli mummy who is up there, always looking over me! Ab, aapke ghar mein toh I only have Dadi to talk to so I have lots of things to share with my mother. So uncle, I am requesting you not to disturb me today and leave me alone! Guddan smiled a small smile at him, as tears glistened in her eyes.

In response, AJ fisted his hands and left from there.

Guddan was continuing about how she directly became a Mother-in- Law, bypassing the bahu wala step when a *thud* sound interrupted her yet again. Turning around with the intent to blast whoever or whatever has interrupted her, her words stuck in her throat as she saw AJ rest his ass on the chair, he had dropped a milli second ago on the sand.

"Aap!! she drawled annoyed but he didn't bother to grace her with any response and leaning back in his chair, looked at the moon.

"I asked you to leave me alone! She spoke, in response to which AJ glanced at her lazily.

"Na hi ye zameen tumhari hai or na hi ye aasmaan, he replied monotonously.

"Toh aap kahin aur chale jaie! She spoke getting up.

"Problem tumhe hai, tum chali jao! He shrugged, and Guddan started leaving when AJ let out the next few words, "Just like always!.

Guddan paused and turned around, fuming in anger."I won't go anywhere! She replied and plopped right next to the camel, huffing in irritation. Once AJ was assured that she has his back to her, his lips quirked up a few inches celebrating the success of his reverse psychology tactics.

Ab aapke ghar mein toh I only have Dadi to talk to..' these words had struck a nerve. He wanted to say that vo ghar uska bhi utna hi hai but words deserted him when he remembered what the truth of their relationship was. He wanted to say that he was there for her if she ever needed him but her sharp words from the airport brutally cut off any words of peace he had.

"You know mummy, ye AJ uncle is forever in a sour mood like a bitter gourd he is! I can almost bet on the fact that he has a kink about locking horns and butting heads with me! Guddan spoke as loud as possible, so that he could hear.

"Likewise, Mrs Akshat Jindal! And do tell my mother-in-law, how you have the talent to rile up any person by complicating the most easiest of the things! Akshat retorted, from behind.

"He suffers from OCD! He is forever cribbing about perfection and cleanliness! Guddan complained citing various instances.

"Your dear Guddan has OCD too, it is Obsessive Compulsive Disaster! He replied back, making Guddan annoyed.

"Aur lecture toh itne dete hain ki pucho hi mat!! Guddan spoke, widening her eyes in disbelief.

"Aur phir bhi, aapki beti ke sar mein kuch nhi ghusta! Her head is empty after all! Ek kaan se andar, doosre kaan se bahar! He suppressed a yawn in response.

"Aapka na bahot ho gaya, uncle! Meri mummy se meri hi complain kar rahe ho! She threatened him, turning around in response to which AJ raised his eyebrows in mock fear.

"Ab aapne hamari baatein sun li hai toh aapko bhi humein batana padega! Guddan asked back to her jovial self.

"Kya??! He asked confused.

"About your first wife! Guddan chimed, and waited but his next words were not just rude, they stung very sharp.

"That! Is none of your Concern! He spoke coldly as a shiver ran down Guddan's spine and she got up.

"Right! Sorry! It's my fault that I thought that maybe you'll want to share something with me, except your hatred and lectures! Par ek baad yaad rakhiye uncle AJ, agar aap mujhe itna sa haq nhi de sakte na toh aage se bhoolkar par mere pati hone ka dhong mat kariyega! I've had enough of you and your rotten behaviour! She started leaving, cursing herself inwardly for making a promise that could never be fulfilled, cursing herself for feeling hurt by his words.

However, the feel of rough calloused fingers around her wrist stopped her as she turned around to see her wrist in AJ's grip.

"I...today..it's the day, 15 years back , on this day, I met Antara.. AJ spoke, in a whisper dispelling all negative emotions Guddan was feeling, as his forlorn eyes looked at the moon. Guddan plopped down right next to his chair and looked at him expectantly. He looked into her eyes and lost the will to keep quiet. All these years, he had wanted for someone who would be here, to listen to him, to share those happy memories and finally, he had someone, who despite his rotten, rascal, ungentlemanly behaviour was right here, smiling at him.

Just what sort of turbulent relation has destiny in store for, him and Guddan...
