At a function held in Ujjain on Monday evening, Shakti Kapoor was insulted on stage and later beaten up by some activists allegedly belonging to Bajrang Dal and Bhartiya Nari Shakti organization protesting about his alleged involvement in exploitation of women.
Reportedly, as the function began, the activists rushed on the stage and started pushing the Bollywood comic villain. They garlanded him with black cloth and slapped him as well. They protested against the decision of the organisers to honour Kapoor with the award claiming he did not deserve the award following his alleged involvement in exploiting women as exposed by the news channel India TV. The local Police apparently, have not registered a case against any person as no complaint was made.
Reacting to this incident actress Kashmera Shah coming out in Shakti Kapoor's defense said, "I think the people who have the right to attack someone are the people who have been exploited themselves. If these women were exploited by him then only would they have the right to attack him. But I presume they weren't so why were they after him? I've met Shakti Kapoor myself. I've done a film (Kahi Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye) with him and he's been quite decent with me and the other female actors."
Madhur Bhandarkar who had been accused of exploitation in the past by a lesser known starlet, Preeti Jain following which he had to face the ire of many female activists said, "I haven't heard about it in details. But if such a thing has happened it is a sad thing."
Star's Laughter Challenge winner comedian, Sunil Pal too had sympathy for Shakti. He said, "What has happened is wrong. He has always been menacing on screen and most of the times shown exploiting women there. But, without any concrete proof doing something like this to him is not fair to him. His onscreen image should not be mixed with his personal life."
Television starlet Narayani Shastri said, "I think these women woke up too late. If they had a problem they should have dealt with it then. Going and beating someone up one year later doesn't make sense. I think these women activists need to focus their attention on bigger problems instead of these petty issues."
Producer Mukesh Bhatt reacted saying, "Is India really a democracy or is it a Gundaraj everywhere?"
An industry insider claimed this to be politically motivated. He said, "Shakti Kapoor has been a Congress member for a long time now and Bajrang Dal as everyone knows owes its alliance to RSS and the BJP. They took this opportunity to malign his reputation. The state has BJP in power and no arrest of any activist shows it was all very pre planned.
