Chapter 2
Neil was driving when his phone rang. Neil parked the car on the road's side and excused himself and went outside to take the call.
"He could've attended the call in the car itself," Tejaswini muttered, "But he's always been weird like this. Always being so formal." Tejaswini got out of the car to find out who Neil was talking to. Kahin isne Rutu ko to phone nahi kar diya? What if Rutu told him the truth?
"Jo kaam bola hai, vo aaj hi ho jaana chahiye," Neil was telling someone on the phone.
What has happened to Neil's tone? Tejaswini wondered. He wasn't that authoritative before. He was always a doormat, too eager to help and please everyone to the extent he never even realized he was being taken advantage of. And here, he's giving order...but to whom?
When Neil got into the car, without looking at Tejaswini, he told her, "Sorry. Aapko mere kaaran wait karna para."
"Kaun se kaam ki baat kar rahe the tum?" Tejaswini replied.
"K...Kaam," Neil stammered, "K...kaun s...sa kaam?"
Tejaswini gnashed her teeth. She was expecting this guy to be assertive? The guy who still stammers in front of the girl who left him for his cousin? She was expecting this guy to stand up for himself? But this was what made Tejaswini so frustrated. It would've been easier for her if Neil was angry with her, if he did everything in his power to ruin Tejaswini? But the fact, there was still no anger in Neil's eyes for Tejaswini made things double difficult for Tejaswini. If Neil punished her, then she didn't have to punish herself every day, every night.
"Hurt me, Neil," Tejaswini thought to herself, as she stole a look at Neil driving, "Hurt me as badly as I hurt you so that I don't have to punish myself."
Meanwhile, Neil was secretly glancing at Tejaswini, thinking, "I'll never hurt you Tejaswini. And I won't let anyone hurt you, whether that person is Rutu or yourself."
"Feeling hungry?" Neil asked Tejaswini.
"Yes," Tejaswini said, "N...no. I... I'm not hungry. We'll be late if we stop to eat."
"Look," Neil pointed in a direction outside car window, "There's a Dhaba. I'll get food packed from there and you can eat in the car itself."
"W...what about you?" Tejaswini asked.
"I've already eaten on way before coming at your home," Neil replied.
Neil went outside to get the food packed from the restaurant. Tejaswini remembered when she came Ruturaj's studio to surprise him.
Flashback
Ruturaj was practicing with a female singer there but the female singer was singing off-key. Tejaswini, impulsively, tried to correct the female singer in good faith, but Rutu shouted at her, "Oh! Shut up, Teju. What do you know about rock concerts so you're giving her singing lessons? Her most recent song went viral on YouTube."
"Autotune use karne ko singing nahi kehte," Tejaswini blurted out.
"Get out," Ruturaj shouted, scaring Tejaswini and then held her by her arm.
"Rutu mujhe lag rahi hai," Tejaswini said as Ruturaj's hold on her was too tight. But Ruturaj didn't listen and left her standing in rain outside, saying, "Agle ek hafte tak shakal mat dikhaana apni tum, Teju."
Present
Suddenly it started raining. Tejaswini's phone rang.
"Hello Kaka?"
"Tejaswini beta! Ek good news hai."
"Good news? Aakashwani wale maan gaye show continue rakhne ko?" Tejaswini felt a surge of happiness. Whenever Neil is with her, everything becomes alright. But Neil was there when her father died. Then...
"You know that rockstar everyone is fan of? Rajwardhan? He wants you to accompany him on his all India concerts."
"Rajwardhan? That rockstar? But how does he even know about me? Isn't he too famous to know about a girl like me?" Tejaswini felt as if she was dreaming.
"He listened you on one of your radio shows on Aakashwani."
"Kaka, why would a rockstar listen to a classical music show on Aakashwani?" Tejaswini still found it nothing more than a prank, "Anyway, tell him No. I won't sing anything except classical songs. You know that very well."
"I told his secretary. They told me he agreed for you singing only classical portions in his song. He wants a fusion kind of concert where each of his song would've a classical portion."
"Kaka, I'm sure this is all a prank," Tejaswini said, exasperated, "I need time to decide."
Suddenly car door opened, and Neil entered with packets of food.
"Food is here," Neil handed the food packets to Tejaswini.
Tejaswini was starving, so she doubled down on food. But she burnt her tongue as the food was piping hot. So Tejaswini dropped a morsel of food but Neil caught it.
"Kitni baar kaha hai aapse, Aparajita," Neil scolded, "Koi bhi kaam shaanti se karna chahiye. Par nahi aapko to bina soche samjhe sab karna hai. Kyon aap thoda bhi intezaar nahi karti?"
Neil blowed the morsels cool one by one and made Tejaswini eat each morsel one by one.
Flashback
Tejaswini was in shock after her father's death and refusing to eat but Neil made her eat the whole food by his own hands, recounting to her all happy times Tejaswini shared with her father (which he got to know from Vedu)
Present
"Y...you seem a b...bit worried," Neil asked Tejaswini without looking at her, "Are you all right?"
Tejaswini looked sideways at Neil, "Kisi doosre ki khushi ujaad kar koi kaise khush reh sakta hai? Anyways, there's a decision I must make. And I don't know what to do."
Neil stopped the car at side and looked at Tejaswini, "Tejaswini, close your eyes and remember your Baba and remember his dream. What would your Baba have wanted? What would take you closer to his dream?"
Tejaswini closed her eyes and remember how proud her father was to see her sing and how happy she herself was while singing.
Then she typed "Yes, I'm ready to sing in Rajwardhan's concerts." and messaged the same to Kaka.
"Thank you, Neil," Tejaswini said to Neil softly, "Sorry, Dr. Neil."
Neil just gave a faint smile.
When they reached home, Neil motioned for Tejaswini to enter first. As Tejaswini entered, Neil muttered, "Welcome home, Tejaswini! Welcome back!"
As soon as Tejaswini entered Neil's home, a message pinged on her cellphone. She opened the message. Inside was a ticket to Rajwardhan's concert.
Were it some other day, Tejaswini would have sold the ticket to some mad fangirl of Rajwardhan. She would've given the ticket for free but she needed money desperately but not now.
After the message, it was written. Rajwardhan wanted her to attend his concert first to get an idea of what his concerts are like before they practice together in studio.
Tejaswini clutched her phone. Was history repeating itself? Neil was back in her life. And another rockstar, all of a sudden, barged into her life. No, the rockstar can forcibly enter her life but her heart will always be closed. For any rockstar. It will be closed for everyone. She just wanted to earn enough money to at least survive now and make Neil hate her at any cost.
She got a message from an unknown number: "Waiting for you at concert babe!" and the message was signed R.
