My two words as someone who is not watching any show at this moment and have never contributed to any TRP. Strictly as someone who uses SM and watches stuff online.
There has to be a reason why SaiRat has dropped out of all popularity meters online. All the couples on TV are separated - Relationship, Auntyji, Tamarind, YHC, KKB, BL, KB etc etc. But they still have a massive fan following on social media. They all keep winning Jodi awards and still have a vast majority of fans who want them together. HC, GK, Krishna etc are still playing flawed MLs but top popularity meters on Twitter.
While I cannot speak of what TRP aunties want, as someone who grew up on ITV shows, I try to not judge the ML and FL of the shows on morality or character growth, because at the end of the day, shows are made for entertainment and rarely have a proper growth chart. Arnav forcefully marrying Khushi would have made him a monster in real life, but reel life and world is different.
However, maybe it’s the acting (less love, more aggression) or personal dynamics or flawed portrayals - SaiRat has lost its fanbase. A couple who used to win every couple poll on SM, now don’t even show up as an option.
I don’t know about TRP and most of us do not contribute to it, so it is futile talking about it, but the decline in SM popularity of both, the couple and NB individually is hard to ignore and I wonder what the reason behind it is.
The main reason for SaiRat's decline is the characteristization of Virat.
As someone who has been active in the forum for two years, I literally witnessed one whole chunk of SaiRat fans abandon ship every time Virat was involved in domestic abuse...starting from Pulkit lunch. I doubt this has happened with any fandom. Finally, surrogacy was the last straw that killed every ounce of the ship that was still alive.
Also, the treatment- unlike other shows, the portrayal of abuse is so real, it sends shivers down one's spine...in other shows like IPKKND, while we grimace & feel disgusted..it's all still presented in a larger-than-life manner.
The family is also so toxic - torturing Sai is their only hobby. In the original bengali version, after a point, all the family members genuinely starts loving the FL. But the family abuse continues to this day in Ghum - all for drama & toxicity. So when the ML blames the FL for not adjusting or accepting the family..it is infuriating.
All toxic MLs have some redeeming quality - they have realization of their wrongs & change. But all Virat does is cry tears and repeat the same abusive traits all over again..& so many times. 😔And he finally blames the FL for his abuse. Surrogacy was a shocker- I doubt if any other ML has committed a crime of this magnitude against the FL. In short, Virat's morals are too low for an ML.
There was a time when fans would beg makers to not copy the original..but ironically, Ghum surpassed Kusum Dola's toxicity a thousand times over. In this day & age, how will young female audience accept this? Except few fans who have enough stomach to let it slide & enjoy the good moments.
So my conclusion is that extreme toxicity & poor characterization of the ML killed the show & the ship for online audience. It was in makers' power to make Virat palatable..in the original version, even Pakhi was not vile...but their morbid obsession for toxicity killed the show. If not, all things being same, SaiRat would still have been popular to this day.
