I'm with you. This is strictly my opinion - I understand many found it bad.
Was the scene necessary - not at all. But execution wise, it was not distasteful (strictly my opinion). The focus was not on V-P, not even on P but on Sai & Virat & on the situation. Thank God for the sensible direction (& dialogues). As you said, it was about two very worried parents - V-P was happening on the side. And both the actors performance was very good.
I saw some crass comments on the actors in Twitter - that was unfair & in bad taste. But as for Twitter mocking & making fun of the scene - that was because of the history - showing cringy scenes of ML with women other than his wife. Obviously people will look at it as an extension. They also made Pakhi's character so cheap. Makers have only themselves to blame.
I feel all this was to show V-P holding the baby when Sai returns - makers love for toxicity - convoluted way to show how Sai has been made a third-party in her own child's birth.
