Vankar ji you have been in this field for quite a while now and for whatever reasons, you seem to have lost completely with the direction of the entire TV entertainment industry. It could be due to the new age obsession with online buzz , Trp etc. Anyway I am not even going to refer to online buzz here.
Just a simple question - Why do you think TV audience watch your show?
In a typical household, its mostly the women folk and elderly who are the regular consumers of TV serials. And mostly the prime time viewers are those who switch on the TV to find some relief from their hectic day and relax with some light hearted entertainment. Isn't this the main intention of TV serials?
The general viewers are a cross section of the society, despite their social and economic demographics, who goes through enough struggles in their lives on a daily basis. Their outlet is watching these shows that either reflect their struggles and how that is overcome OR provide a positive message on how traditions can be changed, women can find their voices, strategies to overcome the issues faced by the common man.
But as a content provider, what are you serving day in day out? The only show I watch is Ghum, so my opinions are based on this show only.
I started watching this show when it reached almost 200 episodes. Sai and Sairat chemistry made me go back to watch all the back episodes. I was watching a Hindi serial after years and I have to appreciate you Vankarji that you brought my interest back in serial watching.
I lapped up the 200 episodes within a span of few weeks and got hooked. Only because of some basic reasons - Sai the character (the girl next door with a strong voice of her own - not ur typical abla naari u see in the serials - with whom I could relate because she represents many of us ), Virat, the flawed ML who is not your typical macho man or dumbass serial ML and most importantly Sairat and the beautiful chemistry they brought to the story by the 2 lead actors.
There were light moments, romantic moments, drama, volatile verbal sequences, heartbreaks, action, comedy - you name it - everything was served as a good healthy mix. For a viewer, it was a relaxing 20 min when he/she can forget about the real life struggles and see how Sai overcame her issues. You provided the reason for people to watch it regularly without fail.
But now, you seem to have lost your sense of direction. You seem to have forgotten why you were making this show in the first place.
Now all you serve is negativity, toxicity and crass content. I have stopped watching the episodes since Samrat died because it is affecting my mental health. Instead of harmless entertainment, you make people feel miserable after watching gut wrenching sequences when you make Sai go through maximum torture on screen. Just because you want to play the Trp game, you make her go through the most regressive treatment from other characters, you make her take the blame for every damn thing that happens on to herself and you show a ML who is deaf, dumb and blind.
As a normal TV viewer who switches on the TV at 8 pm to watch this crap, do you have any idea what goes through their minds? They already have a hundred issues that they deal with in their real life and instead of light entertainment, you give them more heartache and make them feel even more miserable. Why would someone want to see a character being butchered continuously like this on their TV screens unless they are heartless psychopaths, who enjoy the misery of other people?
And are you aware that this type of content, if watched over a period of time works on peoples' psyche and in the long term, they will start normalising the negativity in their own lives. It goes for both the abuser and the abused. Your show gives out the most regressive message that it is okay to abuse and it is okay to accept abuse quietly. Both are equally dangerous.
Domestic abuse, Spousal abuse, molestation, attempt to rape etc are real issues in our country. The statistics are frightening. Yet, you think it is okay to portray these things through your show? If you cannot provide answers to the issues, at least DONT be part of the abuse. Stop victim shaming, Stop normalising abuse.
Being a responsible citizen, you can at least do this bare minimum through your shows. If you do, you will be doing a great service to the people of this country.
Think about it Vankarji, its never too late to change.
