Sonali deserved to be shown her place. But on the flip side Sai shouldn't feel like one important rasam of her marriage didnt happen just because she is an orphan. The right to do kanyadaan is Aaba's but if Pulkit did it, he would be a proxy. He also cares a lot for Sai and is a father figure to her- a mentor and an older person who guides her and has her best interest at heart. So its beautiful that Sai has people who love her like a parent and are willing to fulfil those roles/responsibilities in her life.

My point is that while we have the right to decide what rasam we want and dont in our lives and rituals, we shouldn't unintentionally give a negative connotation to the concept of a rasam without fully understanding it. I dont think that was your intention at all. but this issue of "kanyadaan" term being problematic is something I have read in many places and I wanted to raise it here, because I think it falls prey to being misconstrued. It is important that we don't allow our misinterpretation of the terminology and funda of rituals to get completely lost in translation....

Kanyadaan does NOT mean "donation of a daughter". It does not mean giving away a daughter like a piece of property or as charity or as trade to someone else. It does not mean that father had "possession" of a woman and now it is husbands "possession". There are many people I have seen who do a literal Sanskrit to English translation of the term and then cry hoarse saying how misogynistic the idea is, etc. But thats not accurate. All the misogyny, patriarchy does not stem form the rituals themselves but from misinterpretation of those rituals and from people's attitude/mindset.

You are right. It was not my intention to question the ritual. I am all for kanyadaan and whatever alternative term it has. Sorry, if that offended you

This might be TMI.. but let me tell you why I think Pulkit/Samrat is not a good idea.

My MIL passed away long before my marriage. All our rituals were performed by some other relatives (although from what I know a widower man can still do it and place a betelnut/supari as symbolic wife.. no such relaxation for a female widow).. anyway I digress.

My point is even though all the rituals were conducted, I didn't feel the emotional connect that a mother would have for her son. I miss her especially on festival days even though I have never met her. 😔

Therefore I feel that just for the sake of conducting a ritual should not be a reason for an alternative. I agree both Pulkit and Samrat are there for her. But no one could replace Aaba.

Also, thanks for bringing it up. Such a nice perspective you have and you do make very articulate pertinent points. Thank you ☺️

Part 18 - ‘Yad lagla’

The situation quickly moves ahead and the wedding is fixed for 10 days later. Sai has shifted base to Devi and Pulkit's home as all the bride’s side of rituals would be held there. Virat, desperately missing Sai, makes up random reasons to visit Pulkit's place and spend some time there. Everyone understands his frustration and keeps on teasing both of them. But by now, Virat has become too careless that the teasing doesn't make a difference to him.

They have decided on an intimate wedding so only the immediate family and few friends have been invited. Usha mavshi, Kale Kaka-Kaku have come from Gadchiroli and are staying with Sai.

This time, both Sai and Virat are whole heartedly enjoying the rituals. In between, Virat keeps sending her songs and she does the same. Every night, they end their day on a call, each falling asleep to the sound of others breathing.

Sai’s mehendi function is over and she is sitting in her room looking at her hands and Virat's name in it. She suddenly hears someone singing,

'Odh ke dhaani preet ki chadar,

Aaya tere shaher main Ranjha tera'

Sai talking to herself, "Kya Sai itna miss kar rahi ho Virat ko ki unki awaaj sunai de rahi hai.. sab vaham hai. Vo yaha kaise aayenge?"

However, the song doesn't stop,

"Duniya zamana, jhoota fasana,

Jeene marne ka vaada sacha Mera"

By now, Sai is intrigued and goes to the balcony to check. To her utter disbelief, Virat is hiding in the balcony and singing for her.

"Aap yaha kya kar rahe hai?" Asks Sai in a happy shock.

"Tumhe dekhne aaya tha.. Aai ne kaha, tum ab 2 din ke baad hi milogi to" and he makes a puppy face.

"Par aap yahan se kaise aaye?"

"Pipe chadhke aur kaise? Apni junglee mulgi se hi sikha hai"

Sai looks at him lovingly and realizes how far they have come since the last time she climbed down the pipe.

Virat realising her thoughts, distracts her.. "Acchha chodo, Mehendi dikhao, batao kaha naam likha hai?"

Sai immediately draws her hands back.. "Nahi.. abhi nai dikha sakti, it's not allowed"

"Are aise nahi hota hai.. dikhao na?"

"Bola na nahi dikha sakti, baad main dekhna ise"

"Kab?" Virat asks with a wink.

"You already know kab!!!" blushes Sai at his naughtiness.

"Us din main sirf mehendi thodi na dekhunga!!!" exclaims Virat making Sai go wide eyed in shock at his shamelessness.

“Bahot badmaash ho gaye ho aap. Accha abhi aap jao yaha se, Devitai aur Harini aane wali hai”

As Virat is about to hug her, they hear Devi calling Sai. Sai quickly hides Virat in the balcony and goes and sits on the bed.

Devi has come to the room and is packing stuff for the wedding. Sai tries to make eye contact with Virat and asks him to go. Realising that Devi would not go, Virat throws a kiss to Sai and goes away.

In the evening, during Simant Poojan, after the rituals, Mohit takes the mic and makes an announcement.

"Dada, Sai vahini.. aaj se aapki zindagi ki nayi shuruvat hone ja rahi hai.. aapne pichle kuch saal bahot kuch suffer kiya par jo aap dono ne pichle kuch mahino main kamaya hai vo sabse beshkimati hai. You two are now inseparable. And aapko shayad pata nahi hai.. par kuch log hai jo hamesha se yahi chah rahe hai. This is a small gift from all of us to you"

Mohit has set up a projector in the room and a beautifully prepared AV is played.

The title page has 'SaiRat' written on it and 'Yad lagla' from Sairat the film is playing in the background.

Yad Lagla ga Yad Lagla ga / I have become insane, truly insane

Rangla Tujhyat Yad Lagla ga / Lost in your thoughts, gone completely insane.

Vaas Hyo Usaat Yei Kasturicha / Smells like musk in the sugarcane

Chakhalya Vaar Gwad Lagl g / the taste is sweet.

Chand Bhasto Disach Mawlaya Lagla / the moon shows up during the day and its dusk in broad daylight.

Aas Lagli Mannat Kalvaya Lagla / The mind desires and the heart flutters.

The short film has many moments of Virat and Sai together. The dance at #AniGa engagement, movie date, Christmas day meeting, pictures from Shivani buas wedding and many more such beautiful memories.

Sai and Virat are both surprised at the existence of such pictures and that the family members were actively planning for their reunion. This makes them emotional and they have a big group hug.

Towards the end of the ceremony however, Virat sees Sai standing in the patio and looking at the moon. He goes near her but she is too engrossed to notice him. A lone tear has made its path on her cheeks. Virat deciphers her sadness and gently taps her shoulder.

“Aaba ki yaad aa rahi hai na?”

Sai, startled at his voice, turns towards him and another tear escapes her eye. Virat wipes it away and hugs her gently. Sai, terribly missing Aaba, buries her face in his chest until her sobs subside and composes herself.

Virat - “Thik hai ab?”. Sai nods.

“Sai… main Aaba ki jagah to nahi le sakta… lekin ye promise karta hun ki unhi ki tarah mere liye sabse important tum aur tumhari khushi hi rahegi. I hope you are sure about it now”. Sai nods again and hugs him. They keep standing like this for sometime, bathed in moonlight, sure about their relationship and their future.

The song for this part is “Yad Lagla” from Sairat(film). In case anyone doesn't know, Dhadak is a remake of this but frankly as someone who has seen the original, it is too glossy (wrong to expect anything else since it's made by Dharma films) and the rawness or madness (Marathi meaning of Sairat) is missing.

The hindi song remade from this is ‘Pehli baar’. If possible, please watch the original film.

SaiRat having a normal happy wedding, wherein they are actually enjoying each and every ritual😭😭, Bass aur kya chahiye❤️

Beautiful update❤️

Couldnt agree more about the Sairat-Dhadak part, saw both the movies in theater. Dhadak is the failed glamourized version of Sairat, plus the bad acting. Rinku and Janhavi had zameen aasmaan ka fark. Plus the rawness, the accent and culture, added to the beauty of the og movie. Songs bhi marathi version ka better tha.

Bilkul... bechare dono ke life main koi normalcy nahi hai since day one

Glad you agree to Sairat- Dhadak thing. 👍🏼

I sometimes feel that in order to keep the tune same, words become jibberish. So the song still feels melodious but the essence is gone.
