In India the mindset is still not broad enough to accept former prostitutes as wives. It is tough for divorced and widowed women to get married leave along prostitutes. Things are changing, but it is a very slow change in the mindset. It is easier to have multiple boy friends and then getting married to someone totally different rather than marrying off a divorced or widowed girl...... That is the shallow mindset of people. I personally know of a girl who had a tumultous affair with a guy and married a guy who is his neighbour because her parents wanted her to marry him and he had a huge house, tons of money. On the other hand there is this very pleasant and nice girl, well educated who was dragged out of her in-laws place with the help of cops because they were harrassing her for dowry. The wedding lasted a total of 2 months, but she will remain unmarried forever. It is very distressing to see all this happening, but that is how shallow the mindset is in India in terms of divorced and widowed woman.

There is more to it. Just like Janvi even Nikhil has a past which he does not reveal. This creates confusion and complexity in their relationship.
