Chapter 130
"No" Amelia deadpanned.
"Ames, I"
"No, no" she shook her head standing up and moving a couple of feet away.
Karan stood swallowing thickly, "Why?"
"My papa is due back from my bua’s soon so I’m going to stay at home" Amelia replied.
"You’re hiding it from your dad as well?"
"My bua isn’t well either, I don’t want dad stressing over me as well".
"Amelia, you’ve got breast cancer. You should have everyone around you supporting you at this time and I want to do that" Karan countered. "Mama wants you to stay with us".
"Karan, I don’t want anyone pitying me. It’s bad enough that you, Meera and Vikrant know, not to forget Puja as well".
"Please Ames, just until you recover"
"No"
"When are you telling your dad?"
"I don’t know yet, bua still isn’t well. He’s coming back for a couple days to see me then he’s gotta head back to hers" she answered honestly.
"Basically, you’re not telling him then?"
Amelia looked away sighing heavily, she pressed a hand to forehead feeling a headache coming on and sat down on the chair.
"Amelia" Karan crouched down in front of her placing his hands on her knees. "I want to be there but I also want someone with you if it happens that I’m not there".
"Karan, please understand that I..."
"Marry me" he blurted stunning her.
——————
"Oh, wow" Geet looked around the Christmas markets.
"You think that's beautiful, just wait until you go to each stall" Taz chuckled and tugged her alongside her. The ladies had separated from their better halves to look around in peace knowing all they'd hear from their partners would be moaning and groaning.
Maan had no choice but to stay behind with Samir and Aditya as his wife was dragged away. Samir suggested a coffee in the local café around the corner which they'd agreed to.
"How's business going?" Samir questioned as the waitress brought over their hot drinks.
"It's good, different than my Delhi office" he replied.
"Are you here visiting or on a business trip?" Aditya asked curiously.
Maan picked his cup and took a sip of his coffee allowing himself some time wondering what he should reply to that question, "Geet and I wanted a break, so we'd come here" he answered.
"Is it a permanent move or just for a couple of months?" Samir quizzed.
"We're not looking to go back for now, we'll just see" he replied. "So, Aditya you never mentioned what work you do?"
"My dad and I own KGK Fashion" Aditya responded.
"The clothing line?" Maan inquired.
"Yeah, the clothing line"
"I thought that was owned by a couple" Maan quizzed.
"That's my father and my step mother, they work on the front line. I prefer being behind the front line, I work as the photographer for the magazine" Aditya explained.
"It's not as exciting as he makes it sound" Samir chuckled. "I've hung around and man, its f*cking boring".
"It's these women who take eons to get changed" Aditya rolled his eyes.
"Where's your mom today? I would’ve thought she'd be with you" Samir questioned. "It's been nearly two weeks, that's she's been here. Is she staying for Christmas?"
"She and Kiara have gone out shopping, I'm not sure when she's planning to go home – I'm guessing dad and her had a falling out" Aditya answered then looked at Maan. "Kiara's my half-sister" he informed. "And my parents always make up after their usual tiffs" he joked.
Maan nodded then looked around the café they were sat. It was buzzing with activity, young families, college kids, elderly have filled each table spending time with their families.
Maan pulled out his phone sending a text to his wife.
Enjoying yourself?
He waited for a response however didn’t get one straightaway and wondered what had engrossed his wife that she didn’t respond.
"Maan isn't going to like this" Geet looked between Sanjana and Taz.
"Look, he won't say anything. We'll be there for you" Sanjana assured.
"What if he doesn’t let me keep it?" she questioned as they stepped into the elevators.
"We'll see to him" Taz informed.
"You made me do this because your husbands won't let you do it, didn’t you?" Geet frowned looking between her friends.
"Aditya is going to kill me" Sanjana responded.
"Samir is allergic" Taz added. "We'll get to enjoy through you".
"Plus, we're letting you work at our work place" Sanjana reminded.
Geet huffed rolling her eyes, they stepped out of the elevator and walked towards her apartment. Taz suddenly recalled that Geet's dadima was here, Sanjana couldn’t know that the woman was here so she looked at her friend.
"Sanjana, you go down and keep an eye out. These lot will return any time"
"Why? Why can't you go?"
"Blue balls, just go!" Taz hissed.
"Are you on your periods or something Topaz?" Sanjana huffed.
"Just go, will you?" Taz pointed.
"Alright, keep your hair on" she grated and turned walking away.
"You should've let her stay, Maan is going to find out anyway" Geet murmured as she unlocked her door. "Dadima is resting" she informed as she walked into her apartment softly and walked towards her bedroom.
"Your bedroom is nice" Taz commented as she followed behind. "Are these your wedding pictures?" she picked up a frame from the night stand.
Geet placed the basket down on her bed and sat besides Taz, "That's our first anniversary picture" she smiled taking the frame. "This is our family" she brushed her fingers across her friends faces.
"You've got a large family" Taz commented as she stood up and looked at the other frames.
"This is just our close family, Maan has so many other relatives. Despite being married 3 years, I still don't know half of them" Geet chuckled.
"Anyway, let's head back downstairs" she suggested.
"Are you sure, this will be fine here?" Geet pointed to the basket.
"Yes, I'm fine. They're great for working couples" she responded and walked out of the bedroom with Geet closing the door behind them.
——————
"Don't" Amelia stood up and stepped away. "Not like this" she shook her head.
"Ames" Karan looked at her dejectedly.
Amelia turned around, "I want to be marrying you out of love not pity, not during this. Not like this" she replied.
Karan sighed heavily, stepping forward he cradled her cheeks. "Then, move in with me. Let me look after you, its either that or I move in here" he stated firmly.
Amelia dropped her forehead on his chest sliding her arms around his middle, she didn’t want her family to see her like this. She couldn’t bear to see her father being hurt especially as his only sister probably has any time left, she couldn’t give him another shock and make him feel like he's losing his daughter as well.
"I'll move in with you" she murmured softly, "I'm going to tell my Papa that I'm going to stay with some friends until he returns for good so he doesn’t have to worry".
"He deserves to know, Amelia. He's going to regret not being there if you don’t tell him, he… he might blame himself" Karan explained.
"Not now, not now" Amelia shook her head. "I'm not letting my papa see me like this".
"Let me know when you're ready, I'll be with you" he rubbed her back soothingly. "I love you, Ames" he whispered.
Amelia swallowed thickly, she hadn't said those words in the last couple of months.
"I love you too, Sadu".
Karan smiled widely hearing her nickname for him and hugged her tightly.
——————
"There, they are" Samir pointed to their ladies hanging around the paella van.
"Hey, you want some?" Sanjana spooned some paella and offered it to Aditya.
"No thanks, I'll grab myself a Goulash" he answered and went to wait in the queue.
"Get me a vegetarian one" Samir told him opening his mouth as Taz offered him a spoonful of paella. He looked at Geet, then asked "Aren't you having any Geet?"
"I don’t like Spanish food" Geet scrunched her nose.
"There's a indian food van just down there" he pointed. "There's Bangladeshi van over there and there's a Chinese one on that side" he added.
"I'll stick to indian" Geet answered and looked at Maan, who'd smiled.
"We'll catch you guys later" Maan told them and led his wife away.
After they'd gotten some hot pakoras and samosas, they'd sat on the bench eating together.
"So, what were you doing that you missed my message?" Maan questioned.
"You sent a message? When?" Geet inquired.
"Where's your phone?" Maan asked.
Geet dug through her handbag and pulled her phone out, she smiled sheepishly as she read the message by Maan. "Sorry, I was busy with shopping and those two".
"Bought anything nice?" he questioned seemingly interested.
Geet bit down on her lower lip, if only Maan came to know what she had gotten…"Nothing caught my interest" she mumbled.
Maan arched his brows inquisitively, "What are you hiding from me, Geet Khurana?"
"Promise you're not going to shout at me" Geet replied.
"Geet" Maan narrowed his eyes, "What did you do?"
"WHAT THE F*CK IS THAT?"
Geet winced as Maan scowled at the basket then turned around facing her.
"Maan, you promised not to shout" Geet reminded pointing her finger at him.
"Get rid of it" he told her.
"Maan, its cold and it's December" she pouted.
"No, that’s not going to work with me" Maan shook his head.
Geet puffed her lips out dipping her eyes down.
"Seriously, Geet? I bet it was those two crazies who told you" he muttered.
"It was so cute and… I couldn’t resist" she mumbled.
"No, no it's going" Maan shook his head as he strode over lifting the basket.
"Maan, please"
"I love you Geet, I love you a lot but there is only so much I can handle. This thing" he pointed to the basket, "I can't" he walked past her.
"Dadima" Geet called out knowing dadima was in the living room. "Look, what Maan is doing" she pointed.
"Maan, what's going on?" Dadima stood and followed her grandson and Geet as they strode towards the door.
"I'm returning it back to the shop" Maan told Geet over his shoulder.
"That's not fair, Maan" Geet scowled running forward and blocked the front door. "You're not taking it back" she shook her head.
"Geet, it's not staying" he replied.
"You're being mean" Geet pouted her lips.
"I'm being mean?" Maan rolled his eyes, "Geet, move away from the door or I'm throwing the basket out the balcony" he warned.
Geet huffed and opened the door, however she continued to follow Maan as he walked down the hallway and towards the elevator.
"Maan bete, why don’t you let her keep it?" dadima suggested.
"Because I don’t like them and they're messy" Maan responded. "And its not Geet who wants them, its her friends. Why don’t they keep it?"
"Because Aditya is going to kill Sanjana and Samir is allergic" Geet answered.
"I hate them so that’s my excuse of not keeping it" Maan replied.
"You should've come shopping with us, Sanjana" Kiara told her as they rode the elevator up.
"Well, I had plans with some friends already" Sanjana replied.
Gayatri rolled her eyes inwardly and looked at Aditya, "You're coming down for Christmas dinner aren’t you?"
"Actually, I promised Sanjana's family that I'd spend it with them this year" Aditya responded. "Plus, we spent it last year with you. We'll come for Christmas eve" he added.
"Why don’t you both spend it together?" Kiara suggested. "Bhai, you can invite them up here, your apartment is large enough to hold 4-5 families and it's only Sanjana's family and us"
"Yeah, we could do that. I'll think about it" he answered.
"Where's Tanisha and Samir?" Gayatri asked.
"She's been called into the café, Samir went with her" Sanjana responded.
"That’s nice" she nodded. "They're both suitable for each other, they're in each other's league" she added.
Sanjana scowled realising what she was hinting at, she turned her head narrowing her eyes. "Gayatri aunty, what are you trying to say? Why don’t you say it clearly?"
"If I have to spell it out, then I definitely know that my son didn’t make the right choice"
"Mama" Aditya rolled his eyes looking between Sanjana and Gayatri.
"Aditya, you know I'm joking. Sanjana doesn’t like it if I praise her friends more" Gayatri rolled her eyes.
Sanjana clenched her jaw wanting to unleash her anger however Aditya slipped his arm around her waist and pulled her close. "She's joking around" he commented.
Of course, the bitch is she thought.
"If you take it away, then you're not allowed to come back inside" Geet threatened.
"Okay" he shrugged nonchalantly.
"Dadima, tell him na" Geet moaned.
"Maan bete…"
"Please dadima, don’t side with her on this. I don’t like kittens"
"How would you know if you don’t spend time with her? You might come to like…"
"No, I won't".
"It's funny, you didn’t like me at first either" Geet scowled.
"I had no choice" Maan answered.
"Maan" Geet snapped, "Dadima, did you hear that?"
"Maan bete…" Dadima laughed seeing them both arguing. "Let's go inside and talk about it.."
"No" Maan shook his head. "We're not keeping this kitten, it's a messy disgusting creature".
The doors to the elevator opened, Maan turned away from his wife to step inside.
He halted, his eyes fell onto the woman whom he had pushed to the back of his mind in the hopes of forgetting. His fingers loosened around the basket handle.
Dadima's eyes drew to the woman inside who'd stared back in surprise as she looked between Dadima and Maan.
"Oh, hey Maan" Aditya greeted, his eyes drew to the elderly woman. "You're… Savitri"
Maan stepped back and walked back to their apartment, Geet looked confused.
Dadima didn’t answer, she turned and walked away.
"Dadima…" Geet called and glanced back at the others wondering what suddenly happened.
"Dadima?" Aditya questioned. "That woman is your dadima?"
"How do you know dadima's name?" Geet questioned.
There were so many questions here, Geet wondered as to why Maan and dadima walked away. How does Aditya know dadima's name because she had not yet introduced dadima to them? She had only introduced Taz and Samir to her dadima.
"Aditya, let's go inside" Sanjana suggested as she stepped off the elevator.
"Geet, why don’t you go and see to Maan? I'll call you soon" Sanjana told her.
Geet nodded and returned to the apartment. She glanced down and noticed that Maan had placed the basket down on the coffee table, dadima sat on the sofa looking lost in her thoughts and Maan wasn’t around.
"Dadima, what's going on?" Geet questioned as she approached her gently.
Dadima was too shell shocked to answer, she hadn't ever thought that they'd come across the evil woman after all these years.
"Dadima…" Geet touched her shoulder nudging for a response.
"Maan…" Dadima simply pointed towards the bedroom.
Geet glanced over her shoulder and looked at dadima concerned, she turned around and walked towards the bedroom.
Maan was sat on their bed holding his head dejectedly. Geet walked over gently, sitting besides him and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"Maan, kya hua?" she asked softly in concern. "Maan" she moved a hand away cupping his cheek, and noticed that her husband had tears in his eyes. "Maan…" she whispered.
Maan closed his eyes turning his head away, memories came flooding his mind. The feeling of defeat rolling over him as he thought about the life he'd led, the memories that Gayatri ruined for him. He clenched his jaw swallowing thickly as he recalled the hurt she'd given his dadima, given his young brother.
"Maan" Geet cupped his cheek making him turn his head towards her. "What happened so suddenly?" she asked.
Maan stood brushing a hand through his hair, "I need some space" he murmured and walked out of their bedroom.
"Maan" Geet called out after him, she watched as he grabbed his keys and walked out of their apartment.
"Dadima…" she looked over at her in worry.
Dadima sighed heavily, "She's come back…" she sobbed.
"Kaun dadima?" Geet joined her on the sofa. "Dadima, Maan isn't speaking to me".
"Gayatri, the woman in the lift is Gayatri" Dadima answered.
Understanding dawned on Geet, she glanced over at the door where her husband had walked through in concern and wondered where he had gone.
