Chapter 5: Sound
Silence at times speaks a thousand words when your voice fails you
- Maan Khurana
Irfan repeated his question and Maan considered his words carefully. Has he considered this marriage properly, he was marrying Geet Siddiqui. The girl who'd been attacked viciously by his own brother, the girl hidden away from the world, the girl whom the world considers to be mentally disabled, illiterate, mute and deaf. Yet why is it that he felt there is much to her than what was being shown. He had seen a fleeting understanding in her eyes, he is not mistaken about that but then he sees a girl who stares blankly when asked something, he sees the fears in her eyes and the scepticism but there was a momentarily flicker of relief until she'd met his eyes and her blank stare consumed her relief.
"Maan" Irfan prompted.
He looked at Irfan then glanced over at Geet who'd hidden herself in the arms of her father so innocently, she'd peeked one eye at him sceptically.
"Qazi Saab, I have made my decision" he replied turning to face Irfan. "I'm sure of it. I don't make such decisions lightly" he informed.
Irfan nodded, he grasped Geet's hand and brought her closer, when he gestured to the sofa, Geet shook her head burrowing her face into is chest.
Irfan sat down and made her sit close, Maan moved to the opposite chair with Imran stood besides him.
The imam stepped to the side and started reciting in Arabic then looked between Irfan and Geet questioning them.
Maan wondered as to why the question was even asked, she had no idea of what was going on, she simply stared curiously.
Salma stepped closer placing a hand on Geet's shoulder and answered on behalf of her daughter.
"Geet ke taraf se Qabool hai" she said, repeating it twice more when the Imam questioned again.
Maan answered the same standing up as the Imam said Alhamdullilah and hugged him, Maan was then hugged by Imran and congratulated.
Geet frowned when Irfan cradled her cheeks crying and Salma hugged her from behind holding onto her. Irfan pressed a kiss to his daughter's forehead standing up then approached Maan giving him a congratulatory hug.
"Shubhratan, go set up the food" Salma said and looked at Geet, "I've made all your favourites" she grinned.
Geet did not respond in any way, it was a blank stare. Salma told everyone to head into the dining room and asked Shubhratan to take Geet to her room.
"Kyun?" Imran inquired. "Geet bhi hum sab ke saat kha sakti hai" he looked at Maan who agreed nodding his head.
"No, she's going to eat in her room" Salma shook her head.
"Qazi Saab, I would like Geet to eat with everyone. It might not be a conventional wedding but it is her wedding day" Maan looked at Irfan for support, if there's one thing he learned over the past couple of days is that Salma Siddiqui wasn't going to be winning mother of the year awards anytime soon. Irfan agreed and Salma attempted to protest when he shut her down instantly holding up his hand sternly.
Salma sighed shooting a scowl in the direction of Maan, then told Shubhratan to take Geet into the dining room. Geet looked confused as she was directed towards the dining room, a room which her mother had never allowed her to eat in. She was always hurried into her room with Shubhratan whenever they had guests coming over.
She turned her head to Shubhratan who'd seemed to understand.
"You're going to eat with everyone today, chote bibi" she informed guiding her on the mat then left the dining room to help Salma bring the dishes.
Geet grinned looking around the dining room excitedly, she couldn't believe she'd be allowed to eat with everyone else. She's gotten a new dress today and now she was allowed to eat with everyone else, she couldn't believe her luck. Excitedly she held onto her dress and twirled grinning widely.
"Aap jaiye, hum aate hain" Qazi Irfan pointed towards the dining room excusing himself. Maan and Imran slipped out of the shoes and stepped into the dining room, their eyes instantaneously drew to Geet who twirled.
Maan's body froze when a soft giggling sound echoed gently, he turned his head to Imran who seemed to be equally surprised.
"Geet!" Salma glowered entering inside with the dishes.
Geet jerked and dipped her head down, she slowly lifted her head to see her mother moving her lips furiously and she knew she was getting yelled at.
"Didn't I warn you?" Salma stepped closer after placing the dishes down, she grabbed Geet's wrist and tugged her down to the mat. "Sit here" she hissed. "Don't open your mouth" she warned.
Maan clenched his jaw seeing how Salma spoke to Geet, he was quite appalled by Salma's behaviour. He'd overcome his surprise when Salma started telling Geet off, when he looked over at Geet to see if she'd respond but she only stood there with her head dipped down, he wondered whether he had imagined hearing the sound. Maybe it was someone else? He considered. But then it was only him, Imran and Geet in the room.
Geet scowled when Shubhratan returned and sat in front of her, she glanced around and watched everyone feeding themselves and here was Shubhratan going to feed her.
She shook her head when Shubhratan offered her a morsel, she lifted her hand and gestured.
"Chote bibi, nahi" Shubhratan shook her head. "Open your mouth and eat" she pointed.
Geet turned her head crossing her arms stubbornly.
"Geet" Salma called out in warning, with Geet's face turned away she didn't notice. "Geet" Salma stretched her arm out touching her elbow.
Geet turned her head and looked at her mother.
"Eat" Salma pointed firmly.
Geet pointed to the food then to herself and her hands pouting her lips.
Maan watched all this taken aback and amused, the girl who'd been portrayed mentally unstable seemed to be able to gesture what she wanted, even though he had not interacted with her, he was able to understand she wanted to eat with her own hand.
Even with no voice, she was able to put across her desires.
"Geet, last time I'm telling you" Salma quietly warned.
Geet scowled and opened her mouth angrily.
"Ouch!" Shubhratan hissed shaking her finger and shot a mockingly glare at Geet who covered her mouth and Maan realised by the shaking of her shoulders and her twinkling eyes she was laughing. He wondered whether he would hear that soft sound again but nothing came. It seemed as if the sound before was just something he'd imagined.
Salma shook her head sighing heavily at her daughter, she told Shubhratan to feed Geet quickly as they would have to leave in a while.
"Bibi ji, what are you saying?" Shubhratan questioned surprised.
"You heard me, just tell Qazi saab this is what I said" Salma responded.
"But..."
"Shubhratan, I pay you to work for me" Salma snapped.
Shubhratan nodded and walked out in the hallway, she looked over at Geet who'd stood hugging her father and playing with his beard innocently as he talked to Maan and Imran.
"Where's your things?" Irfan glanced at Shubhratan questioningly.
"Saab... Bibiji is saying that we help Geet in the car and let her leave alone" Shubhratan said softly. This shocked all three men.
Maan was first to respond, "What do you mean?" he turned to face Shubhratan.
"Bibi ji has said it would be better if Geet leaves with you both alone, she'd be used to it by tomorrow and probably will forget" she explained.
"Geet" Irfan gently grasped her shoulders pulling her back, he smiled when she tugged at his beard and brushed her fingers through the prickly thickness. "Stay here with Shubhratan" he pointed and gestured to Shubhratan to come over.
Shubhratan joined her side and side hugged Geet allowing Geet to play with her plait.
Maan followed behind Irfan as he headed towards the living room to speak to his wife.
"Salma, do you realise what you're suggesting?" Irfan questioned sternly.
"Why don't you think on it carefully?" Salma answered not realising Maan was just outside of the living room and able to hear everything. "She's going to forget by tomorrow, she'd cry for a little while then maybe she'd be okay. If we send Shubhratan with her, she'd have to stay for a couple of days and then Geet might not let her return here. She might even come back with Shubhratan" she explained.
"Bas! Bas!" Irfan shook his head angrily. "Hamari beti hai, Salma. You're speaking about Geet as if we had adopted her".
"Maybe you're forgetting I did adopt her" Salma replied.
Irfan gasped unable to believe his wife would ever bring that up.
"I loved her as my daughter, Allah didn't give me a child so I showered everything on Geet. I'm speaking to you as her mother and saying this. She's going to hurt even more if Shubhratan simply walks out two days later. If she sees she's having to go alone then maybe it would not hurt so much. Geet will forget tonight like that... night".
Maan couldn't comprehend the words that were spilling from Salma's mouth, she claimed to love Geet as her own daughter yet she doesn't even seem to know that her daughter is very much aware of what happened. How could she not note that Geet flinched in his presence, though she seemed to be a little okay but she was still wary.
Maan knocked unable to hear anymore, he stepped inside without waiting for an answer.
"Aunty, I couldn't help but overhear your suggestion. However, I would appreciate if you lend Shubhratan for a couple of days, our housemaid Melinda is already waiting and is going to be supporting me in taking care of Geet. We're still strangers to her and your duties still remain even if she has been married off. We require Shubhratan for a couple of days to show us the ropes, then I'll ensure Geet doesn't trouble you" he emphasised 'trouble' in disgust.
Irfan's cheeks heated in embarrassment, he shot a glare at his wife. "Shubhratan will join you, Maan. Salma and I will be there in the morning bringing breakfast".
Maan was going to refuse not wanting breakfast but recalled it was a custom after the Nikah so he nodded quietly.
