Chapter 2 - Her yellow flowers
One month ago
He bit the edge of his toothpick as his eyes scanned for the target through the lens of the rifle. The market was crowded with tourists and locals today; it was a typical summer's day and the breeze from the nearby sea attracted the swarms of people from near and afar.
His phone beeped once. He looked at the notification, his dark eyes glimmering at the message on the screen. His finger pulsated on the trigger, focused on the target when a figure appeared into the frame.
A young woman. No older than 30, no younger than 25. She wore a white shirt with a pink skirt, a handkerchief tied around her wrist. She stopped at the flower stall, bought a fresh batch of daffodils, paid and smiled at the vendor then went about her way, smelling them as she walked past the target.
She was far enough to avoid his line of target, close enough to be the first hand witness to what was about to occur.
He pulled the trigger.
The market descended into chaos.
He disarmed his rifle, pulled up his hood and disappeared from the rooftop. As predicted, the daffodils dropped from her hand as she rushed over to the old man, kneeling down by his side.
"Move aside please, I'm a doctor," she ordered. "Can someone call an ambulance, quickly?"
She knelt down, compressing the gun wound. The crowd gathered around her as he walked past, shielding the man from his view but not the woman.
He watched as she frantically opened her bag, retrieving several medical items that were needed. A faint smirk appeared on his face before he walked away into the distance.
...
"Dr Geet, I commend you on your bravery and courage."
She smiled as she shook the hand of Vivek, in the corridors of the hospital, outside the room where the patient had been recovering. Mr Vivek, as he referred himself as, was one of the most prominent businessmen of the city, who was also launching a bid to enter politics. His visits to the hospital became a regular thing, so he became well acquainted with many of the staff.
"It's really nothing, Mr Vivek. I was simply serving my duty."
"You are always far too humble. It is the bravery of doctors like you who keep our city going against this ongoing crime of evil and corruption."
"You know how strongly I feel about this. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to help."
"If you'll excuse me, Dr Handa. I'll leave the esteemed patient in your capable hands."
"Always a pleasure, Mr Vivek."
Geet stepped back inside the patient's room. Vivek walked a few steps down the corridor, pausing to send a quick message. He turned the corner to see his personal assistant and lover, Suhana, typing away on her phone as she waited for him.
"That was your last appointment of the day."
"Perfect." He smiled as she stood up to face him. "Let me whisk you away for dinner. It's been a long day, and there are more long days ahead."
...
"I cannot wait to get home, put my feet up, treat myself to a nice glass of wine and relax," declared Meera as she clocked out of her shift, following in Geet's footsteps.
"I'd love to relax but I promised Ayaan I'd see him tonight. He thinks we've not been spending enough time together."
"Oh, how romantic! He's been pining after you all week. To be fair, that man has pined after you for three years now." Meera winked as she nudged Geet with her elbow.
"Give over," Geet joked. She spotted her partner Ayaan's car, parked in behind a black motorcycle near the hospital entrance. She waved goodbye to Meera, walked around the back of the bike and climbed into her partner's car. She greeted him with a kiss before they drove off.
The eyes behind the helmet watched the car for a few seconds, then sped away in the opposite direction.
