Part 11
Geet was panting when she reached her room also she was glad that no one saw her rushing inside. Once she closed the door she immediately sent a text.
#need to talk. Urgent.#
Her phone rang within 5 minutes, she didn't waste a second before answering.
"What happened?
Geet narrated all the incidents of the day to neha, who was listening with great concentration without making a noise in between.
Geet had taken maan's advice and contacted her best friend from college the very next day. And it turned out very well; they shared the happening of each other's lives. She was really glad to have contacted neha as now she has someone to share her thoughts and feelings without any hesitation of being judged. What else are friends for? Though neha is busy in her job she never made geet feel she was disturbing.
"What did you say?
Neha asked after she'd heard her story.
"I didn't say anything.
"Why not? Don't you want this marriage?
"I do. I... I couldn't say anything, I was confused.
"Why confused?
"uff... I told you he introduced me to antara as a friend, so I thought maybe he's not sure about marrying me.
"Dear, if he weren't sure then he wouldn't make you meet his child at the first place. He told you the reason later.
"Yes.
"Then why didn't you say YES at that time?
"I... I couldn't. I just don't know how to say... What to say...?
"Why not? Just be straight like always.
"I am not that straight forward now. Also I thought it may seem... umm rude?
"Ummm... Maybe you can tell your father in law to talk to Maan and his family.
"Nahi yar, you don't understand my plight, I can't just say that I want to marry him directly to anyone in my house, it's not my parent's house but my in-laws.
"But you did that already. Told him that you want to get married.
"No, that was different. I was going by their decision that time. Now, I am voicing my own.
"Correct. And that's what you told me that your father-in-law wanted. That you decide on your own whether you want this marriage or not.
There was a silence after that as geet was thinking what she just said was true.
"Umm... Geet?
"Yes. I was just thinking what you said.
"And you know I am right. Just do it, it's about your future.
"I think I will wait for someone to broach the topic.
Neha sighed. After so much convincing also she wouldn't open her mouth.
"Right! It's your call. Okay, I'll call you later I have some urgent correspondence from work. Tell me what happened later.
"Okay, bye.
As per her decision, geet was just waiting for someone to broach that subject. The anticipation was now taking a toll on her as she expected at least Anjali di to ask her if not papaji as one day, two days, three days... passed on.
It felt like she was getting closed in from all sides as maan was not helping either. Their chats had now taken regressive turn with all the general questions. It seemed like there wasn't much to talk anymore which made the frequency of their phone calls reduce drastically.
But there was another person who was equally unhappy with slow pace that the things were moving. Dadi ha now had enough of waiting and watching and decided to take matters in her own hands. So that day she called Raj, to discuss and fix the date for roka ceremony.
Raj was a little shocked to hear that the things have progressed so far and didn't know how to respond immediately without talking to geet first. As they've already once refused to the alliance, it was delicate matter now, all the efforts were being taken by maan and his family while traditionally things should be other way round. Nevertheless he asked if he can invite them after discussing with his family. He was sure that it made Savitriji disappointed a bit, but he was helpless.
Meanwhile, Geet, being unaware of all the recent developments had really lost hopes now. She felt trapped by the weight that came with the term "daughter-in-law as she was unable to express her need and take control of her life.
She had been brought up in a very strict male dominant background, though they had the freedom to give opinions but that was limited to the daughter of the house, if the same liberty was taken by the daughter-in-law it was equated to disrespect. Though that was not the case here, but still she was only used to sharing her opinion with Aditya, there was no need to make herself heard beyond that when he was alive and there was no scope of opening up after he was gone.
It was ironic, her opinion was what everyone sought, awaited and that was the only thing she was unable to convey bound by her own parameters of right and wrong.
Thus, she was taken aback that night when Anjali di asked her not directly though about her meeting(s) with maan.
"How did your meeting with Maan go?
"It was okay.
She kept it short, but inside her heart was beating as if she's just ran a marathon. Any minute now...
"You met his daughter too.
"Yes she's very sweet, lovely child.
Geet smile recalling antara's antics she's such a doll.
"Geet, Maan's dadi called and asked when do we want to do roka?
The sentence just washed over all her insecurities, she'd even started to feel that maybe maan has lost interest on this relation (she assumed it because of the reduction in their calls and chats). She had a breath of relief, this was finally happening. She'll be able to fulfill her responsibilities now, maa wants her out of the house for her peace, papa and di want to see her settles, and even aditya would want that, even Maan is a genuine guy with a sweet child, everything was falling in place like the universe was conspiring for this to happen. She thought that it was good if she went with the flow. Though there was a question of what she wants, but apparently others were taking it more seriously than herself, she anyway had never been much ambitious about her own wants.
"When are we having the roka ceremony?
Was geet's next question, an Anjali stared at her shocked for few seconds before she had a smile which slowly followed a twinge of red that tainted geet's cheeks. The thought of marriage apparently made her blush, her eyes were down-casted too.
"Are you sure? Do you want more time?
Anjali asked her though geet suspected it was more in context of teasing her.
"No di, I am happy with this, I... I mean I don't want more time.
Anjali held geet's shoulder affectionately
"I am so happy for you geet, today my brother will be in peace in another world seeing that the person he loved the most is getting her share of happiness even though it's not him who gave you those happiness.
Both their eyes were wet, it was mixed emotions, happiness of new beginning and yearning of the lost relations.
It was the roka day, and even though it was supposed to be a small affair, the kapoor house was all decorated with flowers and sweets. Geet was arrested in her room with a beautician and how much ever she protested she was not allowed to step out. All the arrangements inside the house were overseen by Anjali while Raj was in his room giving last minute instructions to his wife.
"You remember our deal right?
She nodded meekly, the divorce thing was such a blow to her system that she hadn't yet recovered from it.
"Right, so if you want to go outside you can. Otherwise stay inside I don't want you in front of khurranas, you are only going to create a scene.
She nodded again as he left the room. Few tears left her eyes at the cold demur of her husband, but really she earned this.
Raj received the khurrana's at the gate, he greeted Maan followed by Annie-Arjun, dadi and vinod (maan's father) were to reach in few minutes by other car, before them an army of servants entered carrying lots of covered plates.
"Namaste Maaji, bhaisahab
"Namaste beta
Raj greeted savitriji and vinod khurrana as they reached their door, dadi replied enthusiastically while vinod just nodded his head with a stiff smile. He escorted them inside while others had already settled in the living room.
Dadi immediately looked around if all the items were brought by the servants properly and cross-checked with anie that nothing was left. They had some casual chats as refreshments were served when dadi finally asked for geet.
"Now, I can't wait anymore to see my bahu Raj, call geet we shall start the ceremony soon.
Anjali left from there to get geet while between elders the absence of Mrs. Khurrana and Mrs. Kapoor was being discussed.
"Sorry bte, Maan's mother couldn't come as it was a bit hurried. But I am sure she will join us for engagement and marriage.
Though it was odd for Raj as why a mother can't find time for her son's important day, he thought it was better not to ask while he thought for an excuse for his own wife's absence.
"Anjali's mother has gone to see her relative who met with an accident this morning, so she couldn't join us
He gave an uncomfortable smile, lying for hard for him, and he wouldn't do it if not for the respect of his wife and family.
But all these details hardly registered maan's brain as he'd gotten a glimpse of geet descending from the staircase looking divine.
The light pink Ghaghara rightly complimented by a dark shade of makeup, down-casted eyes and a shy smile completed her look. His first instinct was to get up and escort her, but he controlled his urges by clearing his throat loudly making others to look at him and then follow the direction at which his eyes stuck.
"Maan do you need some cough drops?
Anie asked in his ears making his ears go pink in embarrassment and she totally enjoyed teasing her elder brother. Moments like these are rare.
