Chapter 21(b)

With elders being there things started looking better and relaxed. Rishabh and Maan were trying to send the elders back but they refused. Geet was also clinging to Radharani as she was a little scared of Maan's temper now. Finally it was decided, that only Radharani will stay till Geet is wheeled in to Operation Theater (OT) and rest everyone will leave. Promptly at 1:00p.m., matron with ward boys came to wheel Geet into the OT. Rishabh held Radharani back as he could feel, Radharani slowly loosing grip on herself and he did not want Geet to remember her mother's sad face. Maan held Geet's hand while they were taking her to OT. When Geet became unconscious she doesn't remember.
Location: Outside Operation Theater (OT), 02:00p.m.
The surgery started and only the youngsters were present, Neel and Gauri were home as they had been awake whole night. Radharani refused to go home until Maan said,"Maa-sa, aap ghar jaayiye, jaise hi Geet ko hosh aayega, main aapko turant phone kar doonga." (Maa-sa, please go home. As soon as Geet gets conscious, I will immediately call you.) Sameera had also come after elders had their lunch, leaving Ayush with Rajeshwari and Pritam. An hour became two, then three, finally at 6:00p.m. OT's red light was switched off and both Dr. Rajshekhar and Dr. Aacharya came out exhausted still in their scrubs. They went near Maan and Rajsinghania brothers. Dr. Aacharya said, "Mr. Khurana, I have tried to remove all the abnormal (cancerous) cells to the best of my capacity and Dr. Rajshekhar has massaged and dressed all the bleeding wounds in Mrs. Khurana's gastrointestinal tract. But how successful the surgery was will depend on Mrs. Khurana's resposes once she gains consciousness. She will have to stay in hospital for about two weeks."
"Doctor, can I stay with her tonight?" Maan asked.
"Mr. Khurana once Mrs. Khurana gains consciousness, she will be wheeled to ICU and then be administered with painkillers, sedatives etc. so that she has to bear minimum pain. Hence, I suggest you all also go home and rest as you cannot stay with her tonight." Dr. Rajshekhar explained.
"Even if she becomes conscious, we cannot let any family member meet her as she is very weak and can pick up infections easily. Excuse me!" Dr. Aacharya said and left.
"Doctor what about her diet?" Maan asked remembering Savitri Devi's instructions.
"Mr. Khurana, for 24hrs. Mrs. Khurana will be NIL BY MOUTH. Meaning she can't eat or drink anything orally hence we nourish her intravenously. After 24hrs., we will try with liquid diet. Now I must leave." Dr. Rajshekhar said.
Once both doctors had left, there was discussion going on between Khurana and Rajsinghania brothers and all eight of them wanted to stay till Radharani's phone call interrupted them. She ordered Rishabh and Neel to return home immediately as they are newly weds. Grudgingly Rishabh and Neel left for home. Hence, now it was Maan, Yash, Veer, Arnav, Sid and Vicky left. Before Maan could say that he will stay, he got an urgent call from office, so Maan had to leave. It was decided that Veer and Vicky will stay for tonight.
Later in the night around 01:00a.m., Veer and Vicky went to grab a coffee to ward off lethargy and sleepiness. Just then a dark figure entered Geet's room. Geet was tossing and turning restlessly muttering,"Pani...pani...pani...". (Water, water, water...) A nurse came and said, "Mrs. Khurana, pani abhi nahi thodi der mein." (Mrs. Khurana, we will give you water soon.) Then check her parameters and left. Once nurse left, a dark figure went near Geet's bed. Geet opened her eyes, "Aap...aa...gaye! Mujhe aap ka...hi intezaar thaa." (You...have...come! I...was...waiting...for...you!) Geet said with her parched throat.
"Kaisa naa aata? Maine apni Mishty ko poore din nahi dekha hai. Tum kaisi ho Mishty?" (I had to come. I have not seen my Mishty for full day. How are you feeling darling?) Maan said in husky whisper.
"Suniye..bahut...taqleef...ho raha hai! Mujhe...pya..
as...lag...rahi...hai!" (I'm...in...lot...of...discomfort. I'm...thir...sty!)
"Chinta matt karo, thodi der mein sab theek ho jaayega." (Don't worry you will be alright soon!)
"Aap mere paas...rah...ega..." (You...please...stay...
ne...ar...) Geet dozed off due to medicines. Maan stealthily left before anyone could notice him in Geet's room.
NEXT MORNING 7:00a.m.
Location: KHURANA MANSION (KM)
Early next morning Maan was having breakfast, when Rishabh and Neel came. Savitri Devi asked them for breakfast but they refused saying, "Hummei apni behan ki sasural ka paani tak peena varjit hai!" (We are forbidden to even have water in our sister's in-laws' place!)
"Beta, jab tak Maan aur Geet ke phere nahi hote tum apni behan ki sasural nahi magar apne baba ke dost ke ghar aaye ho." (Son, till Geet and Maan are not married according to Hindu rites and rituals, this is your father's friend's home not Geet's in-laws' home.)
"Ranjit bilkul sahi keh rahe hain. Neel beta aap chinta matt kariye aapka nashta rasoi ke Maharaj banayenge jaise mera nashta bann raha hai." (Ranjit is absolutely right. Neel you can also have this food as its made by chef who cooks fasting cuisine for me.) Hence, Savitri Devi forcifully fed both the brothers.
After breakfast Rishabh said,"Dadimaa, Chachaji aur Maan, Neel, Arnav aur mujhe aaj shaam ko hi nikalna padhega Mumbai ke liye kyunki koi zaruri kaam aa gaya hai. Yash, Veer aur Sid, Maa aur Baba ke saath yaheen rukhenge jab tak Gudiya theek nahi hoti. Sameera aur Gauri bhi humare saath jaa rahi hain, kyunki Maa hum dono ko shaadi ke baad akele nahi jaane dena chah rahi hain." (Dadimaa, Uncle and Maan, Neel, Arnav and I am leaving for Mumbai today evening as some urgent work has cropped up. However, Yash, Veer and Sid along with Maa and Baba will stay till Gudiya doesn't recover. Sameera and Gauri are also accompanying us as Maa doesn't want Neel and me to travel by ourselves after being newly married!)
"Radharani bilkul sahi kar rahi hain. Reeti aur riwazon ke hisaab se shaadi ke teen mahine baad tak pati-patni ko ghar ke bahaar har jageh ek saath jaana chahiye!(WRITER's LIBERTY!)" (Radharani is absolutely right. According to Hindu rites and rituals. Till three months of marriage is not over, no newly wed can leave their home alone!)
Once Rishabh and Neel left, Savitri Devi said in a serious tone, "Maan, ek baar Geet ghar aa jaaye, humara sujhaav hai ki aap usse vidhivatt shaadi kar lijiye." (Maan once Geet is back, I suggest you get married to her with all Hindu rites.)
"Kintu Dadimaa, uski tabiyat theek nahi aur aap sab reeti aur riwaazon ke saath shaadi karna chahengi." (But Dadimaa, Geet is not well and you would like our marriage to be with elaborate customs, rituals and ceremonies.) Maan objected.
"Hum jaante hain, magar bina Geet ki shaadi huye Rajsinghania parivaar tum dono ko akele US jaane ki ijazzat nahi denge. Hum sab jaante hain ki Geet ke operation ke saath-saath uski post graduation bhi US mei hoga." (I know. But without Geet's traditional marriage with all Hindu rites, Rajsinghania family will not let you or Geet travel alone to US. We all are aware that not only Geet's operation is scheduled in US but her post graduation studies as well!)
"Mujhe manzoor hai. Magar agar Geet ki marzi ho toh! Dadimaa, kuch der baad aap kuch black coffee aur fruits bhej dijiyega mere liye kunki hospital ki canteen ka khana bahut teliyaa aur teekha hai. Abb mai chalta hoon." (I agree. But only if Geet also willingly agrees. Dadimaa, can you please send to hospital black coffee and fruits for me as I cannot eat hospital's oily and spicy food. Now I shall leave.) Saying this Maan left. On reaching outside the hospital ICU, Maan sent Vicky and Veer back home and was waiting for Dr. Rajshekhar and Dr. Aacharya when they come for their morning rounds. Meanwhile, Maan started check his e-mail and office work which he was neglecting since arrival of HIS MISHTY.
Dr. Rajshekhar and Dr. Aacharya came out of ICU and said, "Mr. Khurana, we are very happy with the progress of your wife's health. Hopefully by today evening we will be able to start giving her fluids. If her stomach can accept that, then hopefully we can shift her in Presidential Suite tomorrow."
"Mr. Khurana, please don't forget to bring Mrs. Khurana for radiation after a month of surgery." Dr. Aacharya instructed and then both doctors departed.
Maan informed Khuranas and Rajsinghanias about Geet's health.
