Chapter 11: A dark nights Curse
Vicky walked up and down the corridor waiting for some news, it had been a good few hours yet there was no news of his dadi and then there was Geet who sat there without saying a word. Her knees pushed up to her chest and her head resting on top, her heeled sandals lay of the floor discarded and forgotten.
'App theek ho?' he questioned sitting beside her, only then had she pulled her head out of the deathly grip of darkness
Her voice failed her, nothing seemed to escape; the air passing through her throat was attacked, pricking her into muteness. With difficulty she managed a slight nod, trying to answer his question. The sudden light blazed her big weary eyes making it almost impossible to adjust, forcing Geet to turn back into the solitude of darkness quicker than he could think. Letting the tears to dip down into the fabric, it wasn't a mere fabric; this was meant to be her wedding clothes. The colour to her future, instead it turned out to be the bearer of death. Death of her dreams, her wish and her expectation. This wasn't what she envisioned, being married shouldn't be like this? But who was she trying to fool, this was her rightful punishment? For falling in love without knowing, for marrying without asking and for being born as a Handa without worrying. This was her marked fate, old curses don't die; they revel in glory and strike when called. This was her curse, this was her life!
'Could you dress her wounds please?' Vicky asked stopping one of the nurses, Geet's wrist had turned blue and the blood had dried, leaving behind a red mesh. In all the worrying he had forgotten to nurse the woman broken by his brother, he looked at her once again but she didn't care to lift her head blocking him and the outer world from her pain.
'Please could you show me your hand, excuse me' the nurse asked seeing a woman dressed in what looked like her wedding attire. But nothing about her seemed to speak about her joy, she had closed off sitting in one the plastic chairs turning away from all possible light.
'erm are you listening' the nurse asked lightly tapping her shoulder jumping Geet up
'Apka wound' the nurse asked looking deep into the hurt eyes, they seemed hallow; no life resided in her big hazel delicate eyes. The rims had turned red but the tears hadn't stopped forming even with Geet trying to drink them back. Throwing a dirty look to the man marching across the corridor she got to work slightly smiling at the desolate looking girl. But Geet seemed to be far away from all this, overlooking the nurse's presence. After Dadi was taken into the ICU, Geet had sat down and numbed to her surroundings. Thoughts of the past and present rushed by but she was too soaked to grip onto anything. Questions puzzled her mind, whatever has she done to deserve this? Why was she married to a man who loved some else? Not even thinking about the divorce papers. She hissed in pain feeling the antiseptic attack her raw wound yet again another pain she was slowly learning to accept.
'It's quite deep and broken glass has managed to seep right in' the nurse explained looking at Geet who looked rather lost not exactly understanding anything being said, all that she remembered was being asked to sign the papers. Vicky stopped his parade to look at the nurse who slowly picked at the wound and cleaned up the new blood. His brother had managed to rip this woman apart in few hours, she was bleeding due to his stupid love. The pain she felt was clearly evident. With each tear cascading down her face another part of his heart sank in guilt.
'Vicky what's wrong?' Maan rushed in clutching onto his brother, he had returned home very early in the morning to find out about his Dadi who was taken into hospital, only then realising all the missed called from home. However Vicky seemed to not care to call him, and by the looks of it he still didn't care.
'VICKY' he shouted garnering the attention of nearby people but he could careless
'WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?' Vicky shouted back pushing Maan off himself
'THIS IS A HOSPITAL' the passing doctor ran in seeing their fight escalating, the shouting had disturbed the patients and even the family and other professionals seemed to be troubled with the brothers' bickering.
'App theek ho' the middle-aged doctor addressed the bride looking girl, she looked scared and frightened. If anything she looked like a fallen angel, suffering at the hands of a heartless beast. That was when Maan turned to see the state of the girl he married, her hair tangled; mascara running down and blood stained cheeks. Upon closer look, he even realised that her wrists were still bleeding through the dressing. But her eyes was his undoing, those hazel centre seemed to be a world apart from the eyes he remembered at the mall. Even then she was scared but now she was broken and scared. The raw pain that emitted through her eyes washed through him like a rash wave throwing him off balance. This wasn't the girl he married, this couldn't? Leaving a slightly anxious Sameera back had affected his being but seeing the broken girl look lost griddled him in guilt. Dadi too had fallen ill, he thought tearing his gaze away to look through the small excuse of a window. There his dadi lay lifeless, attached to machines; her face devoid of any emotion even anger would be welcomed at this moment.
Geet looked up hearing the brothers quarrelling, her unfaithful husband of not even a day was standing right in front of her. The want to raise all the fuelling questions to him had erupted from a still beating heart. Was it possible for something that's dead to be still beating? She looked at the man that was very different from her imagination, he wasn't kind and calm. He was a rough rogue, a merciless killer, the assassinator of her dreams. She watched him stare at her and then turn around, as if to say he didn't care for her and that made feel even more devastated. The man she left her family for, the so called Maan she thought she loved wasn't her ideal husband, in fact he was far from it. She turned back to darkness, numbing her past happiness to the reality of life. There was no remorse of his side, maybe just sympathy.
'Hows my dadi doctor' Maan and Vicky pounced on the doctor as soon as he existed the ICU.
'She's had a major heart attack, thankfully you brought her at the right time but one of her valves is severely damaged, we call it Myocardial Infarction. Her body is responding to the warfarin at the minute. That's a good sign so you can smile' the old man addressed to the girl sitting in front which did work a little magic, for Geet had smiled even if it was a ghost of smile.
'When can we see her?' both Maan and Vicky question in a rushed tone
'She still needs observation, but I suppose you can see her one by one but be careful not to cause any stress or tension' the doctor advised going up to Geet and lightly taping her head, as if giving her his blessings.
Maan had been the first to rush in leaving Vicky and Geet behind, shocking them both.
'Selfish sod' Vicky muttered quietly but it didn't miss to reach Geet who agreed, that man was responsible for dadi's this state. While he was out god knows where, she and his younger brother where wilting in tension in the hospital. He should have at least offered his sibling to see his grandma first. The love that built over the last 2 months washed away in a night, in a dark; cold and callous night.
