CHAPTER 19

Location: MALHOTRA CONSTRUCTIONS, MUMBAI
Maan was provided by Mr. Baldev Malhotra the cabin reserved for MD of Malhotra Constructions. Seeing the room Maan immediately exclaimed, "Mr. Malhotra, this is very well designed cabin. Who has designed it? You?"
"No Mr. Khurana..."
"Mr. Malhotra, I'm much younger to you, please call me by my name. I apologise for being rude to you for past two days!"
"No beta you were right. Please call me uncle. If Karan would have been here, he would have also been annoyed by Malhotra Construction's unprofessional behaviour in work."
"Karan?"
"My elder son he was MD of of Malhotra Constructions five years back. This is his room. From the day I have seen you, I keep on feeling that my Karan has returned." Mr. Malhotra pointed to the photograph hanging in the corner of the room with a sandal wood garland (chandan ka haar) around it.
"What happened to him?"
"My Karan was a simple, hardworking and soft man. Then he fell in love with a girl and married her. By the time he came to know that the girl was a fraud and gold digger it was too late! She not only destroyed my innocent and simple Karan but also Malhotra Industries, thereby leaving me with only Malhotra Constructions."
"What was the girl's name?" Maan was feeling that he has heard this story before.
"The fictitious name of the girl was Ayesha Kapoor but real name was Devyani Rathore. She married Karan and then behind his back sold Malhotra Industries to our arch business rival. Karan could not take this betrayal and guilt for ruining his family's name and prestige in the business world and committed suicide. After Karan's death, I came to know that Karan was not the only one she duped."
Maan was shocked to know that there was another man like him whom Sameera or Devyani had duped. Both Mr. Malhotra and Maan's deep thoughts were broken by a gentle knock on the door.
"May we come in Sir!" Gina spoke from outside when she got no response.
"COME IN!" Mr. Malhotra said.
Gina entered the room followed by Adi and Meera. Seeing Adi and Meera there Maan knew that there will not be any opportunity for Maan to be with his sweetheart, Gina so said, "Meera, as long as you are in Mumbai please see that you train Ms. Braganza with the basics of Architecture. Mr. Malhotra, I would like to talk to you and Dr. Armaan Malhotra in privacy of your cabin."
A little while later, Maan, Mr. Malhotra and Armaan were in Chairman's cabin together. Maan broached the topic,"Mr. Malhotra I want to open a Branch of Khurana Construction in Mumbai. Do you know any company on the verge of bankrupcy in Mumbai? As and it will be easier to merger with already existing company compared to starting from scratch."
"Why don't you buy Malhotra Construction?"
"WHAT? DAD YOU CAN'T DO THIS!"
"Armaan what is the use of keeping Malhotra Construction? I'm getting old. You are not interested in business. Besides being in this company I miss my Karan so much that I'm unable to concentrate on the work. I DO NOT WANT EITHER JASWANT OR ROHIT CHOPRA TO URSURP MY MALHOTRA CONSTRUCTION!!!"
"Mr. Malhotra even I agree with Dr. Malhotra. Its your ancestral business why do want to sell it? Armaan I suggest you take Mr. Malhotra home make him rest and then talk to him calmly." Maan suggested.
Armaan understood the hidden concern and worry of Maan for his father and nodded in affirmative and both father and son left for home. Rest of day was uneventful. Meera and Gina were busy together whereas Mr. Sharma escorted Maan and Adi to the construction site.
Next day as expected Mr. Malhotra and Armaan came with few documents. Mr. Malhotra said, "Maan beta, tum inn kagazon par sign kar do aur aaj se yeh company aur iska staff tumhara hua. Legal formalities mei thoda time zarur legega. Bass meri tumse duo request hain. Pehli ki ho sake to iss company ke employees ko matt nikalna! Aur doosari ki jab tak yeh merger legally naa ho iske baare mei kissi ko pataa naa chale, khaaskar ke meri patni, Kaamini, mere saale Jaswant aur Rohit ko!" (Maan, you please sign these papers and and from today this company and its staff are your responsibility. Legal procedure may take sometime. I have only two requests, one that please don't fire any employee of this company. And second no one should know about this merger i.e. Staff as well as media. Especially my wife Kamini, my brother-in-law Jaswant and his son Rohit.)
"Uncle, mujhe lagta hai ki aap ko aur Armaan ko phir se apni company beichne ke baare mei sochna chahiye!" (Uncle I still feel you and Armaan should reconsider this decision.)
"No Mr. Khurana, Dad is right. Karan bhai and I am Dad's first wife, Deepika's children but after our Mom's death, Dad remarried so that we both boys could have a mother."
"Magar woh meri sabse badi galti thee. Mujhe humesha se laga ki Deepika ek gaon mei pali-badi hui hai iss liye gawaar hai. Usse mere Maa aur bauji ne pasand kiya thaa.Uski saadgi aur bholepan ki maine kadar nahi ki aur usse humesha beizzat kiya. Aakhir kaar usne mere taano se thak kar apna jeevan hi khatam kar diya. Ek baar bhi nahi socha ki inn dono masoomon ka kya hoga? Bacchon ki khaatir maine phir se shaadi kari magar apni pasand ki ladki se. Meri nayi patni, Kaamini ko sirf meri daulat se matlab thaa, naa ghar se, naa bachon se aur mere rishtedaaron se. Apne saath dahez mei woh apna vidhur(widower) bhai, Jaswant Chopra aur bhaanja(nephew), Rohit Chopra bhi saath mei laayi. Uske baad hum teeno ki zindagi aur ghar ek narak bann gaya. Iss liye jab tak yeh company hai muje isse khone ka darr hai. Mere chint ka kaaran yeh company hai jisse mere baap-daadon ne apni khoon aur pasine se bannaya hai, ki jisko mere jaane ke baad woh teeno lalchi harap lenge! Ek daffa yeh company beich di to woh darr bhi khatam ho jaayega!" (That was my biggest mistake! I always felt that my first wife, Deepika is not upto my standard as she is from village. She was choosen by my parents. I always ridiculed her simplicity and innocence. Finally she could no longer tolerate my taunts and jibes and took her life. She not even once thought what will happen to her little boys? Then I re-married for my children's sake but to a girl of my choice. My new wife, Kaamini was only interested in money. She was not concerned about home, children and even relatives. With her like a dowry came her widower brother, Jaswant Chopra and nephew, Rohit Chopra. After that our home and lives were a living hell. My only cause of worry is this company. The company which was built by sweat and toil of my father and forefathers! I don't want after my death for this company to go to these greedy people. If there is no company then there nothing to worry!)
Hearing Mr. Malhotra's painful story, Maan felt that God is showing him his own reflection i.e. the way he behaved with Geet since her since childhood! He also always considered Geet below him and his family as she was an orphan. It was recently that he one day came across her property papers and realised that she was a billionairess and equal to Khurana family and him in status and wealth.
Three months had passed and Maan was very busy in these three months so was unable to meet his sweetheart. After Malhotra Constructions was legally converted to Khurana Constructions, he started cleaning up and sprucing up his new Branch Office. Maan started with firing Rohit Chopra and his right hand man, peon Ramlal. Hearing which Rohit ran home and complained to his father and aunt. They ran to complain to Mr. Baldev Malhotra but he was found dead in his farmhouse. After his death, Mr. Malhotra's wife or ex-wife, Kaamini as he had divorced her before his death came to Khurana Constructions, Mumbai Branch screaming and shouting with her brother and nephew. Maan knew how to deal with such people and got her, her brother and her nephew thrown out of Malhotra Constructions, now Khurana Constructions by security gaurds and his personal body gaurds. When Kaamini went to Mr. Baldev Malhotra's lawyer and questioned him he said that what Maan said was true. Baldev had sold Malhotra Constructions to Maan and had divorced her and showed her signatures on divorce and alimony papers. Kaamini was given Rs. Five lakhs per month as maintainence and a bungalow in Chandigarh as alimony. Her signatures of acceptance were on the divorce and alimony forms. As she was divorced before Mr. Baldev Malhotra's death, and she had no child with Mr. Baldev Malhotra she had no right on his will as well. Malhotra Estate, Malhotra Farm House and cash in the bank were only in Armaan Malhotra's name and after Armaan's death will go to a trust. Kaamini, Jaswant and Rohit were fuming but could not do anything as it was their laziness and compliancy that they lost everything. One good thing happened in these three months and that was Maan and Armaan had become good friends. Armaan had started liking a Dr. Riddhima Gupta in his hospital and would often share his feelings with Maan. But Maan was still unable to open his heart regarding his love to Armaan.
