In Hindu Mythology, when a boy and girl gets married they are considered to be a God Vishnu (Protector) and Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth). As no mortal can ask a God and Goddess to touch their feet! However this is usually applicable to the bride's side and hence the son-in-law is always treated higher than one's own son. Also after "Kanyadaan", your daughter is like a guest in her parent's home. I think I have cleared your doubt!
