PART 5. MAAN RELIVES OLD MEMORIES - III
Maan watched with bated breath at the scene in front of him. It was mid afternoon and Maan was hiding behind the pillar on the first floor waiting for his wife to come by so that his plan would be executed. As he waited, his mind reminded him of a similar situation. He chuckled as he remembered that day few years back when he had strewn marbles all over the floor only for Geet to see them and pick them up. Tab giri nahi tum Geet? Aaj gir jaao please!
Maan's eyes went to the water spilled in front of him. He had spilled it there with hopes of getting Geet to fall. If she fell, I can catch her and lift her! Maan huffed as he remembered another one of his flop moments! He had made the lamp fall down near her feet, just so that he could come and save her from the glass. But the plan backfired and Geet came out looking like the hero. Maan looked up and prayed to her Babaji that atleast this plan did not fail. And then as an afterthought he also prayed that he would be able to grab her before she slipped so that she did not get hurt.
Just then Geet arrived and Maan did not even notice that he was holding his breath. Her leg fell on the water and she slipped and Maan finally let out a breath. He scrambled forward to grab her but before that she managed to stabilize herself by holding the railing of the first floor. Geet! Tumne yeh plan bhi flop kar diya! Maan glared at the girl. All you had to do is allow me to grab you before you fell. Itna bhi nahi kar sakti!
Geet took huge gulps of air as the slip had scared her. Luckily for her, she grabbed the railing nearby and managed to save herself from falling down and getting hurt.
"Tum theek ho na?", Maan asked with real concern. He did not want his wife to get hurt but if she did get hurt he might get his chance to lift her in his arms.
When Geet shook her head, Maan sighed in sadness. Kyun Geet? Why don't you allow me to lift you? No! I won't let this ruin my plan. Aaj main apni biwi ko godh mein uthaake rahunga!
"Geet! Are you sure you are fine?", Maan asked with wide eyes.
Geet nodded again but Maan shook his head.
"Geet! I am not sure! Is tarah se phisli ho! Jaroor chot lagi hogi!", Maan spoke with alarm.
Geet shook her head, "Nahi Maan! Main theek hun!"
"Kya theek hun? Tumhein kya pata ki tum theek ho ki nahi?", Maan blurted out.
"Kya?", Geet was confused, "Mera shareer hai! Toh kya mujhe pata nahi hoga ki mujhe chot lagi hai ki nahi?"
"Nahi Nahi Geet! Tum samajh nahi raho!", Maan tried to steer the conversation back to where he wanted it to be, "Main yeh kehne ki koshish kar raha hun ki andhruni choton ke baare mein tumhein kya pata? Woh toh Doctor ko pata hai na? Tumhein kya pata?"
Geet nodded, "Haan! Yeh bhi sahi hai!" She thought back to how she slipped and how for few seconds there was no ground under her feet. She shivered as she thought of that moment. Then she remembered how while grabbing the railing, her wrist twisted a little. Agar kuch sprain hogaya toh! Dard toh nahi ho raha! Phir bhi...Hey Babaji! Doctor ko dikhaana hi theek hoga!
"Toh phir chalo kamre mein! Main Doctor bulaa deta hun!", Maan spoke and Geet nodded.
Geet was about to start walking when Maan bent down to lift her. She took few steps back rapidly and squeaked, "Yeh kya kar rahe hain aap?"
Maan looked at her as if she was an alien, "Kya kar raha hun ka kya matlab? Godh mein utha raha hun!"
"Kya? Par kyun?", Geet was confused once again.
"Arre! Tumhein chot lagi hogi? Main tumhein uthaake le jaata hun!", Maan told her and once again bent down. Geet sprang back again. Nahi! Yeh mujhe uthaayenge toh main inke ek dum kareeb ho jaaungi! She imagined how close she would be to him in his arms and she shivered. She decided she would not allow him to pick her up. She cannot handle this closeness. She cannot!
"Rehne deejiye Maan! Main theek hun!", Geet murmured in worry.
Maan shook his head, "Tumhein chot lagi hogi Geet? Mujhe tumhein uthaane do na!", he bent down once again and Geet skittered back once again. Why did he feel like Geet was a rabbit and he was a hunter? Maan wondered.
"Nahi Maan! Main theek hun! Maine railing pakad li thi!", Geet spoke as she gulped.
"Par tum neeche girne waali toh thi na! Mujhe tumhein uthaane do na!", Maan bent again and Geet jumped back again. Maan sighed. Yeh jyaada hi kuch ho raha hai!
Geet shook her head vigorously, "Girne waali thi! Par giri nahi! Main theek hun!"
Maan felt his anger spike in annoyance and he glared at her, "Arre! Pati hun na main tumhaara, toh mujhe tumhein uthaane do na!"
"Kya?", Geet was shocked by his reasoning but before she could jump back or react in any other way, her feet left the ground and she was swung up. She looked at her husband with wide eyes as he lifted her in bridal style. As he adjusted the grip on her, she automatically put her arms around his neck.
Geet watched Maan with unblinking eyes as he took her to their room. She could not look away from him. Pati hun na main tumhaara, toh mujhe tumhein uthaane do na! His words resonated in her mind and she flinched. Pati... that was one word she never thought he would associate with himself. She remembered the indifference and anger he showed at their wedding and looked at the man carrying her. She never thought that the man who showed no emotion except anger on their wedding day would be so eager to express his position as her husband to her today.
They entered their room and Maan gently placed Geet on the bed.
"Tum theek ho na?", he asked her softly, the concern in his eyes clear for her to see.
Geet nodded but her mind was stuck on the concern she saw in his eyes. He walked off to call the Doctor and inform the family and she observed him as he walked off.
Geet looked at her hands where the engagement ring still remained. How indifferent was he during their marriage! And how caring he is now! Her mind went to the event a day back when they were stuck in a lift. Then he wanted to kiss her! Today he wanted to lift her in his arms! And now he was showing concern for her! Hey Babaji! Yeh kya ho raha hai? Kahin Maan ko mujhse pyaar...
Geet felt her heart thud in her chest as she realised that Maan might be falling in love with her. Before her heart could bloom with excitement another thought entered her head. But what if she was wrong? Geet's eyes widened. What if he just cared for her as a friend? She remembered how few years back he made tea for her because she was studying for exams late night! Tabhi bhi toh concern dikhaaya tha! Par tab toh pyaar nahi hua na? Toh ab kya guarantee hai ki pyaar hoga!
The Doctor arrived and checked Geet but Geet was still lost in her thoughts. She replied the Doctor's questions half heartedly but her mind kept on going back to her confusion. Nahi! Yeh pyaar nahi hai! Yeh sirf ek dost ka dost ke liye concern hai! Of course, a voice sounding similar to Maan whispered sarcastically, Main toh apne har ek dost ko kiss karne nikal padta hun right? Geet jumped at that thought only to realise that rest of the family had arrived by then and worriedly sitting by her as the Doctor ordered brace for her wrist and declared she was alright.
"Tum theek ho na Geet beta?", Daadima asked and Geet smiled. Her family started to chatter around her and her eyes raised and then widened when they fell on Maan who seemed to be intensely staring at her. Geet looked away. Ok! So Maan tried to kiss her! But that only means he is attracted to me! Pyaar ki baat aayi kahaan se? But Geet could not deny that hope was blooming in her heart that her husband might love her. She shook her head. She had to squash that hope. She had to kill it before it turned into wave and crashed right into the rock of unrequited love.
Lekin agar yeh sach mein pyaar hua toh? Geet's heart taunted her and Geet felt uncertainty again. Evening turned to night but Geet remained confused. She did not know whether to remain by her decision to divorce Maan or take a chance with him. It was after dinner time and Geet was walking up the stairs to their room. Her confusion had slowed her steps and with a puzzled expression on her face she walked up. As she looked up, her eyes fell on the door to her room and she stilled. She was about to go to their room. It was the place he would be. Woh wahaan honge! She took a step back just at the thought. She cannot face him. She cannot face him when she was feeling so vulnerable. She cannot face him with all the thought about her decision racing through her head. She turned around and ran down the stairs. The thought of facing Maan scared her and without her realizing she headed towards the one room in the whole house that gave her the feeling of security and stability, Daadima's room.
Geet reached Daadima's room and closed the door.
"Arre Geet! Tum yahaan kya kar rahi ho?", Daadima asked as she sat up in her bed.
Geet jumped and turned to look at Daadima. She had unknowingly barged into Daadima's room.
"Da... Daadima... woh... Maan!", Geet could not explain.
Luckily for her, Daadima misunderstood her predicament, "Hum samajh gaye! Jaroor Maan ne jhagda kiya hoga haina?"
"Huh!", Geet looked at her and then realizing that Daadima unknowingly gave her an excuse nodded vigorously.
Daadima huffed, "Yeh Maan bhi na! Ghussa toh naak pe rehta hai! Geet beta! Tum yahaan humaare saath aaj raat so jaana! Kal tak Maan bete ka ghussa thanda ho chukka hoga tab unke paas jaana, theek hai?"
Geet nodded feeling relieved.
It was nearing 12 AM. Where is she? Maan sat waiting on the sofa in their room. After their first night when Geet spent the night on couch, Maan made sure he came to the room earlier than her just so that he could take the couch and leave the bed for her.
Geet! Kahaan ho tum? Maan was worried. Even if there was too much kitchen work Geet and NT always retreated to their rooms around 11. And he heard NT talk with Dev as they entered their room half hour ago. Agar NT aagayi toh Geet kyun nahi aayi?
Maan stood up worried for his wife and went out of his room to search for her. In the next half hour he searched through all the rooms in the upper floor but did not find her. He went downstairs to check kitchen but the lights were off. Toh Geet hai kahaan?
Just then Daadima's room opened and out stepped Geet with an empty water jug in her hand obviously out to fill it.
"Geet!", he stumbled towards her, "Tum Daadima ke kamre mein kya kar rahi ho?"
Geet looked away as if avoiding his eyes. But Geet was not avoiding him right?
"Woh... Main...", Geet murmured as she side stepped him and walked into the kitchen, "Kuch nahi!"
"Kuch nahi?", Maan spat in confusion as he followed his wife into the kitchen, "Geet! Main tumhein pooch raha hun ki tum Daadima ke kamre mein kya kar rahi ho aur tum kuch nahi bol rahi ho!"
Geet filled the jug and turned around only to come face to face with Maan, "Ho kya raha hai yahaan?", he looked at her in confusion and then confusion cleared and in its place arrived worry, "Daadima toh theek haina?"
Geet nodded and looked away, "Haan! Daadima theek hai!"
She escaped the kitchen and Maan followed her. Feeling annoyed, he grabbed her arm forcefully. The force turned her around and she looked at Maan with shock.
"Geet! Mujhe sahi sahi jawaab do! Tum Daadima ke kamre mein kyun so rahi ho? Humaare kamre mein kyun nahi aayi?", Maan spoke in agitated voice.
A normal Geet would have stammered out an excuse and scurried away to Daadima's room. But this was not a normal Geet. This was a confused Geet, confused due to the emotions Maan's actions for last two days caused in her. This was a frustrated Geet who could not understand her husband and his actions at all. This was a heartbroken Geet whose love was unrequited thanks to the man standing in front of her. And this was a hopeful Geet who still yearned for the love of her husband. All these emotions jumbled up and turned into a dangerous cocktail of emotions that was threatening to explode inside Geet the moment her control over her emotions broke. And right then when Maan glared at her, her control broke and the tumult emotions on which she was sailing turned into a storm and unleashed on Maan.
"Kyun nahi ka kya matlab?", Geet glared at her husband. Maan opened his mouth to calm her but Geet started to retort sharply not letting him even speak.
"Kyun nahi ka kya matlab? Hote kaun hai aap mujhse yeh poochne waale? Pati hain sirf naam ke! Divorce hone waala hai humaara, bhooliye mat!", Geet pushed him back and he stumbled. He watched aghast as Geet continued her rant letting out all the emotions bottled up inside her.
"Aapko koi kaq nahi banta mujhse yeh sab poochne ka! Koi haq nahi! Aur poochne ka kya, aapko koi haq nahi banta mujhe kiss karne ka ya godh mein lene ka! Aapko koi haq nahi! AAPKO KOI HAQ NAHI!", she burst out crying and fell on her knees, the water jug having fallen down from her hand during her rant and spreading water on the floor and all over her salwar. But Geet did not notice as she continued to sob.
Maan felt his heart break at seeing his wife cry. Her sobs wrenched his heart and for the first time Maan realised how his actions must have affected Geet. She was overwhelmed by his actions, he realised. The kissing, the lifting all must have been too much for her to take in! He placed his hand on her shoulder to comfort her but she shrugged him off. She looked up and glared at him. She stood up, "Haath mat lagaana mujhe! Aapko uska bhi haq nahi!"
Geet turned around and stormed off to Daadima's room while Maan stood there in shock. In a daze, he walked up the stairs and into his room. As he sat on the bed, he realised that he pushed Geet too far. He came at her too fast for her to handle. One day he tried to kiss her, next day lifted her in his arms, all this must have been too fast for her. She was overwhelmed! In his impatience, he scared her off. Ab kya karun?
Maan stood up worried. He had to give her some space. Yes! That's the right thing! He had to give her time to understand his love for her! He had to give her some breathing space so that she could understand her own emotions! But how can I do that while staying in the same house as her? Maan wondered. That is when he got the idea. He had a conference due for four weeks. He had refused to go when it was offered wanting to spend time with his wife but now he decided to take the chance. He would go away from her for their own sake. It will give her breathing space and he won't be tormented by the fact that his own wife was not in love with him. And when he came back, maybe she would have missed him. Yes! Going away is what is best for both of us!
Maan made his decision and started to pack.
Geet woke up late in the morning. She blearily looked up at the time and sat up in shock. It was 8 AM! Maan would be ready and sitting at the dining table for the breakfast. But she had been sleeping and had yet to make the breakfast. Hey Babaji! She scrambled off to the main hall only to see NT serve the family. NT noticed her and smiled at her. After serving her husband, NT walked towards Geet and hugged her.
"Di! Aapne mujhe uthaaya kyun nahi?", Geet asked in worry.
NT smiled, "Geet! Daadima ne humein bataaya ki tumhaara aur Veerji ka jhagda hogaya hai! Aur Daadima ne tumhein rote hue bhi suna! Isliye hum sabne tumhein sone diya!"
NT's words triggered last night's memories and she was reminded of her and Maan's fight. On impulse her eyes searched for him and came up empty. Maan kahaan hai? She did not even notice that she blurted the question out loud till NT answered her, "Woh toh chale gaye! Kolkata! Kisi conference ke liye! Chaar hafte mein aa jaayenge! Par hum yeh sab tumhein kyun bata rahe hain? Woh toh tumhein bataake gaye honge na?" Saying this NT walked away, but Geet stood there in stupor.
In daze, Geet walked towards her room where she entered the shower and stood under it. One single tear dropped from her eyes and then another one and then another one. Slowly tears flowed through her cheeks and sobs wracked her body. Maan had left! After she told him that he had no right on her, he left! He simply left! She continued to sob as pain wrenched her heart and soul!
Hello people,
What do you think of the twist?
Maan left the city for few days!
Ab kya hoga!
The scene of godh mein uthaana is in Jab Se Tere Naina!
BTW, readers, does anyone remember that at the end of Dhoom Dhadakka and even at the end of Kya Pyaar Karoge Mujhse, Geet talked about Maan giving her so pain because of his plans. This was the pain she was talking about. Instead of confessing he played games to win her and during that, he made her cry a lot. And that is why in next sequel she will make her own plans to get revenge from Maan. And that sequel is going to be really funny, people!
Of course, Geet does not know that Maan does all this because he thinks Geet fell out of love with him. See, how misunderstanding creates more confusion! But then if there was no misunderstanding and confusion, where would your writer be?
Thank you, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
