Chapter 9. Maa ka phone aaya

He was lost in a deep slumber when the shrill, deafening ringtone of his mobile roared through the room and jolted him out of his sleep. Rubbing his eyes he answered the call, "Hello"

"Hello Maan beta kaise hai aap? Sorry to call you this late. Are you busy?"

" I m fine Dadimaa and its okay. You can call me anytime. First tell me have are you?"

"I am not at all fine", he heard his dadi speak. "why dadimaa? What happened? Is your B.P normal? Heart palpitation?" he asked in a worried tone "yes. My health is good. It is your future that worries me my son. I heard you denied to marry. How can I be fine when you act like an obstinate."

"Dadimaa plz do not start again. Why don't you understand? I am not ready to settle down. There is so much I have to attain. I solely want to concentrate on my career now."

"I do understand beta. You have always been an ambitious child. And I did wait for two years. Now I feel restless. I am always scared that some or other day I'll get a stroke and leave this world even before seeing you settled."

"plz Dadimaa do not say such things. You are going to live for another hundred years. And as far as me being settled, I will marry but only after 2 - 3 years. Promise.

"keep your promises with yourself. I want you to reach Jalandhar by next possible train. We have got a very good proposal. I cannot overlook it. I like the girl and I want you to meet and like her as well."

"Dadimaa... Why are you being so adament? Whats wrong with you? He almost groaned onto the phone. "Nothing is wrong with me Maan. It is you who has been acting stubborn since 2 years. Its my turn now"

"I am not coming then."

"Fine. Then don't ever come to jalandhar again even if I am at my deathbed. He heard his Dadimaa say in a cold and stern voice before she disconnected the call. Frustrated, he threw the mobile on the bed.

Life is a bitch. He had often heard and now believed.

His Dadimaa was never the one to force her decisions on others. It was the first time that she had resorted to emotional blackmailing. It could only mean one thing.

His Dadimaa had already accepted the girl whoever she was as her daughter in law.

He very well understood the dangers of going to jalandhar but his Dadimaa had left no option. He had to go.

And so picked up his laptop and wait for it to boot up and than typed urgent leave application send a copy to his new boss and then to the chief .

He knew his leave would be sanctioned as he hadn't taken a leave in last one year. And after that he booked online train tickets in jalandhar express. He did not get tickets at such short notice which meant he had to travel in the general boggie. Another headache.

The train was scheduled for the next morning at 10. That would give him time to collect his bike from the garage.

After making all arrangements, he decided to call Sameera but a glance at the clock and he gave up on the idea. It was past midnight. Instead he sent a msg "urgent work. Going to jalandhar. Have mailed an application to chief. Still do inform them. Bye! take care."

Keeping his laptop and mobile aside he tried going off to sleep. But his mind was disturbed. So instead he switched on the TV and tuned in to one of the sports channel. A polo match was being broadcasted. He continued staring the TV screen, his eyes drooping after sometime unaware of the fact that his life would no longer be the same after the trip.
