Part 52 - Adopted affections
A women dressed elegantly in a simple suit stood up to greet her son, five years brought a lot of change in him. Fine hair lined his face making him look older but her son did suit the stubble, he was a few inches taller, more built and even more powerful. He looked like a lion, his aura; his power; his style spoke of his upbringing which she was no part of. She was a mother of leisure, be it Maan or even Vicky. She raised both of them the same, at an arms distance. While Vicky lived with her, Maan found his own jungle far away from her. It was simply really, not all mothers are a foundation of love, and some are cold which they hid behind their facade of being modern and hip. Nannies were hired to do the job they were naturally meant do to, helpers brought up their children while they enjoyed their youth and social life. Much like what Anita did, marrying the perfect partner after a year of her divorce with Raj and soon after she gave birth to another son. Life was blissful for her, while her other son; her part suffered at the grips of loneness.
Taking long strides Maan reached his mother within a matter of minutes, Geet followed slowly behind wanting them to get over their greetings. However what she saw in the name of welcome was a smile from his mother and Maan, well he waited for Geet to join so he could pull out the chair like a true gentlemen. His face was cold, emotionless and unreadable, but who could blame him. Life wasn't as perfect as it seemed.
'You look good son' Anita started, drinking in a tear or two
'Hmmm how are you?' he asked robotically looking through the menu. They had come straight to the restaurant where his mother was staying from the airport, Maan had a plan to finish this meeting soon. That's how he saw it, when one has no emotion tied to someone other than pain then what more can it be called than a meeting.
'I'm good, Vicky says hi. His starting business, he wants to be just like you' she added wanting to see a change in his expression but neither did his features change nor did he look up at his mother once
'How's business going, dadima kaise hai' she continued questioning still not paying attention to Geet who witnessed the duo
'Business is great, in fact this hotel was constructed by us. Actually Geet here designed it' he elaborated looking at Geet, Anita noticed how his voice softened the minute he mentioned Geet and the look in his eye told the same story
'Nice to meet you Geet' she smiled pulling out her hands
'You work with my son' she questioned wanting to know more, if what she read was right then Geet was more than a colleague to her son
'No she doesn't only work with me but she'll soon be my wife' he stated looking squarely at his mother who coughed at the response while Geet was gobsmacked, no girlfriend or fianc business, straight to marriage. Butterflies were let loose feeling a giddy feeling which lasted for a free second
'Water' Geet offered with shaking hands still trying to absorb the news. But what she disliked was why she left sorry for the women whom she strongly disliked before
'Thank you' Anita offered talking the glass
'So what do you do? Whos...'
'She's the deputy architect at our company, she lives with her dad, sister and daughter' Maan rudely interrupted his mother whom he was sure will ask sooner or later about Geet's family
'Daughter' she repeated shocked, her son was marrying a married women that too a mother of one. Shocking isn't it, the same women who married again didn't want the same for her son. If she could remarry then why not Geet, she's a mother and so is Geet. Then what's the difference really apart from the fact that Maan was making the 'mistake' now. The shallow women perceived it as a mistake but when her second husband did the same, what was it then? A gift, a norm or an expectation.
'Maan how can you marry a married women'
'The same way he married you' Maan answered angered by her question, she had no right on him. So he was free to do what he liked, when she gladly walked out on him, was it fair of her to question his decision. Yes he felt bad for his mother, while growing up he realised that being cheated couldn't be an easy thing but then leaving your son behind couldn't possibly the answer. The child in him was still angry, upset and hurt. While the man in him learnt how to forgive her, or so he thought until now.
'Maan don't forget his your father now' Anita raised her voice
'NO his not' he shouted catching the attention of the nearby customers
'Maan please' Geet held his hand trying to control his raging temper
'What does your ex-husband think of it' Anita spilt her venom hating the indifference she faced at the hands of her own son
'Will he let his daughter accept someone else?' she continued
'Please stop this' Geet answered hating where the conversation was leading to, a part of her wanted to shut the women up but then again she was Maan's mother
'See Maan this daughter of hers will never accept you, like you never accepted Vijay or the women Raj married' Anita smiled seeing its effects
'For your information Muskaan is already my daughter, it's a question of marrying now and then she'll be ours, mine and Geet's. There's no third person in this like yours' he spit in anger, he didn't need to discuss this with anyone. Geet was his love and Dadi being the only family he cared for knew this.
'Don't be so ridiculous Maan, she's Geet's daughter fine but can never be yours' Anita tried to put some sense, according to her world step-parents never acknowledged their step-children never mind accept. Maan was neither accepted by Priya (Raj's second wife) nor Vijay (Anita's 2nd husband).
'I will say this for the last time, Muskaan is mine as much as is Geet's. Frankly speaking I don't care whether you accept or not' he fought not realising when Geet was pushed back into the deep dark world which both Maan and Geet were fighting to escape. Geet was in an alternative world where Maan's words fail to reach her. A world of her own, depression; hurt and betrayal were its foundation. Geet couldn't help to think that pain followed her everyway, quickly getting up she ran for the door in tears.
'Geet' he shouted following her out the restaurant to see her run into a taxi
'Geet open the damn door' he shouted banging her house door
'You scared me' he shot pulling her into his arms while she erupted into another cry, her body shook vigorously trying to submerge another blow but this time it was harder than the last
'Please stop crying, my mum has nothing to do with us. I accept Muskaan and promise to love her as my own' he said pulling her to the sofa and then he took her hands in his before uttering his next sets of words
'Muskaan is our baby haina' he wanted to see her smile, this morning it was like a path to love and beyond but now everything turned dark and dull much like the night. Thankfully everyone else weren't at home, but Geet was too disturbed to take notice of that.
'But she's not my baby Maan' came the whisper along with another sob
'she's not my biological daughter' she cried before running off to her bedroom leaving a shell-shocked Maan behind.
Thought of the day: I think you've realised i don't like this Anita character much, there are 69,540 looked-after children (31st March 2015) in England. These kids are in homes or adopted, most without a normal family and abused (domestic). It's a disgusting reality but many children are suffering. If the UK is this bad, then I'm sure elsewhere it would be worse. After all the UK is known for HUMAN RIGHTS. I know I understand some mothers are druggies so it's better for the children to be away but what about the normal mothers who's made a 'mistake', or so they claim. Their mistake is costing a child a life of hardship and pain. A child found in front the church/cathedral, on the street, in the park etc - over the years these stories have increased. Is this the way a mother should behave? Sorry I fail to recognise why your hardship should be valued more than the life of your child? Sometimes maybe it's a life and death situation, believe me I have read a lot about honour killings in the past but what about the poor baby, and innocent child no more than 1-7 days. Ok I'm seriously depressed now.
I have watched a movie recently, it's quite old 'Homeless to Harvard' an inspirational story, her journey to a better life. It's to-the-point, and an amazing movie but left me to ponder over the reality of life and some things are absolutely shocking. Do watch it if you like TRUE STORIES. I know off topic sorry.
