His Royal Majesty Maan Singh Khurana folded his arms behind his neck as he lay in his colossal bed, a pretty courtesan slipping silently out of his room. It had been a good day, to say the least. His kingdom had been at war with another nation for the past year, and winning today's battle had crowned Maan and his land the victor. His people could now be at peace and enjoy the fruits of his wealthy and glittering kingdom. Cheers had rung out from every citizen, flowers and confetti flung from every window.
In honor of the victory, Maan had arranged for a grand celebration, where the food, women, and wine had flowed freely. Despite the recent battle scars on his body, Maan felt only contentment. A drowsy smile played on his lips as he closed his eyes.
A sudden knock on the door startled him awake. Maan sat upright and squinted through the darkness to the giant clock by the fireplace. It was almost three in the morning! Who dare wake him at this hour?
Maan threw on his heavy robe, literally stitched with fibers of gold, and threw open his double doors to reveal the daring visitor. There stood Adi, Maan's dutiful and faithful advisor, wringing his hands before the king.
Maan cinched his robe tightly around his waist. "Why in the world have you woken me, Adi?" he demanded. "Do you know what time it is?"
Adi swallowed nervously. "Your Majesty, may I speak to you for a moment?"
Maan crossed his arms. "What is it?"
"I -- well, you see, Your Majesty, although the war has ended, we have certain things to deal with --"
"I can sign whatever documents need to be executed in the morning," Maan said impatiently, eager to climb back into bed.
"It's, ah, a little more complicated that, Your Majesty."
"Explain."
Adi opened his mouth to speak, then closed it. "It -- ah, it might be better for me to show you," he said, walking backward out into the corridor.
Maan rolled his eyes. Really, this was such a waste of time.
But Adi was gone only a moment, and when he returned, two guards in their imperial uniforms were trailing behind him. The guards were carrying a girl in between them, bound in chains and wearing a torn dress. Tears were rapidly slipping down her face, which was coated in dust.
"We found her hiding in the staff quarters, Sire," one of the guards said proudly. "She's from the enemy nation. We tied her up nice and good for you."
Maan glanced at Adi, who was looking rather sorry for the girl. "Your Majesty," Adi began softly, "She says her name is Geet."
