Today Savitri Devi Khurana was a lady on a mission. As she roamed the hallways of her mansion, searching for her eldest grandson, she made up her mind to pester him until she got him to agree with her.
As much as she loved him, she was tired of him living like a recluse. No parties, no hobbies, just he and his tai chi.
As she headed to the gym, her suspicions were confirmed. She heard him before she saw her 26 year old grandson.
Huffing and panting, he was doing his daily katas. With a body to die for, girls threw themselves at him. And it didn't hurt that he was listed under Forbes Top 30 Under 30.
"Maan! I've to talk with you."
Maan stopped his exercise at the sound of the voice of the matriarch of the Khurana family.
"Yes, Daadima?"
"Maan. I'm worried for you."
"Why? Whats wrong with me? I'm fit and fine. I do my Tai chi everyday, don't I?" Maan smirked, teasing his grandma. He had an inkling where this conversation was heading.
"Maan. You enjoy riling me up, don't you?" Daadima scowled. "I just got a call from my friend, Khanika rathod, saying you declined her invitation for her annual gala, again!
This is the third invitation to a social gathering that you have rebuffed this month, Adi says. Its not healthy beta. At this age, you should be having fun, partying. Not sitting at home every night with your files."
Maan sighed.
"Look Daadima, I have nothing against social gatherings. What I do have a problem with is all the hypocrisy and obligations that come with it. Khanika aunty wants me to go so that she can set me up with one of her nieces and show them off to me. All the invites are reject are because they don't genuinely require or even want my presence. They just want to feature their parties and increase the value of the party with a high profile guest list."
Savitri looked at her grandson. At such a young age, he has understood the workings of the so called society. She remembered her own times. How her husband and she had to struggle in this very society and its vultures.
"Beta, I know. Its okay. I understand. But promise me, you will atleast try to lessen your workload. And take some rest, maybe take a vacation."
Maan's eyes lit up. "You know Daadima. KC is planning to expand our horizons. I was thinking we could start building holiday homes in tropical islands. It'll boost our net worth in international markets."
Daadima shook her head. "All this boy ever thinks about is work. Come on, get ready. I'll set up the table for breakfast."
"Okay Daadima. Thanks." He kissed her wrinkled cheek and left the gym for a shower.
The 13 storied building of Khurana Constructions was a piece of architecture to be marvelled. Why wouldn't it be? It was one of the leading Construction businesses in the nation, in the world maybe. The employees who worked there were of top calibre and took pride in each of their projects.
The most important factor in its success was the fact that the boss took personally oversaw each project. At least he was kept in loop even if he wasn't personally involved. It was the one of the things that his grandmother, who had built the empire along with his grandfather taught him. After the death of his parents and his grandfather, his grandmother aka his daadima, had singlehandedly managed the Khurana empire and brought up her grandchildren. Maan Singh Khurana was her eldest grandson, her pride. Then came the twins. They had made it clear that they would have nothing to do with the khurana empire. Daadima and Maan were okay with this decision, since there was no use in them doing something for the rest of their lives which didn't give them happiness. It was Maan's Daadaji's dream to see KC at the pinnacle of its success and it was Maans dream to fulfil that dream. Architecture, designing buildings, making homes, made him feel happy, contended, giving back to the society.
As a black Audi entered its premises, you feel the air of Khurana Constructions change. The employees sat up straighter and checked their files. It was no secret that maan Singh Khurana did not tolerate mistakes and sloppiness.
As he entered the building, he couldn't help but feel pride. He was running a company so large in work and worth, few could even dream of. The same company was the reason he had so less people he could trust. People wanted to get to know him to impress him, for their own benefit. To crawl up the ladder of success. It was frustrating sometimes, but he guessed, it came with the success package.
He entered his pristine white cabin and called Adi, sasha and Martha into his cabin. Martha briefed him on his days appointments. Also informed him that today the new interior designer was joining. The new designer would be working with him on the new ucoming project. He didn't want to be working with a newbie, but he had seen her designs. They were impressive. And at such a young age. He was eager to be working with such new fresh, ideas.
Adi was his right hand man. He was also his head accountant and extremely loyal to him.
Sasha was his munshiji's daughter. Munshiji had been loyal to his family for a long time, Sasha was a project coordinator. She got the job done. Maan was aware that she was always hinting or flirting with him, but frankly, Maan never found her thatappealing. Guess she was pretty but it was as if she had no individuality. It was always MK would like this, MK would do this. Professionally, he was satisfied. But personally, it was boring.
With that he dismissed them and began his days work.
In another end of the town, Geet locked the door of her new house and walked to her car, which was being driven by Mohit.
"Ready? For your first day of a boring job."
Geet laughed. "Its not boring if you love it."
"Then lets go." Mohit started the car.
