Chapter 43 - Maha Episode

(Last Chapter)

Nikhil was pleasantry surprised to find Riya at his door. He felt highly embarrassed at the state of his living room, old dishes on the table, socks lying around and papers all over the place. Riya giggled but told him not to worry.

"Actually, I came to talk to you. Geet bhabi told me about your proposal." Riya felt a little shy and folded her hands in her lap.

"And, what did you think?" Nikhil sat down next to her grabbing one of her hands. Riya smiled uncomfortably, removing the hand again.

"I like you Nikhil, I really do. But I can't marry you. The thing is", Riya tried to explain as she saw Nikhil's face fall.

"Geet told me about you but at the same time, Dadi and Divya aunty asked my hand for Vicky. It is just..."

"Look, think about it again. You will be happy with me, I have spent so much time with Sohan, and I know a lot more about you. And I will also take care of Armaan. The three of us will live happily." Nikhil tried to convince her. Riya got up, she was feeling more and more uncomfortable.

"I can understand, you really are a good guy and no doubt any girl who will marry you will be happy but this girl is not me." Nikhil got up, frustrated. He ran his hand through his hair.

"You don't understand. I have to do this, for Sohan. I just have to." Riya looked confused.

"Why? Did Sohan bhai say something to you before he died?" Nikhil averted his gaze and Riya's doubts increased. She turned him to face her.

"Nikhil, please tell me. What did bhai say? Please."

"What will he say?" Nikhil yelled.

"How could he say something when I killed him? How could he know that the guy he loved like a brother was the one who caused the accident that killed him, his family, Geet's happiness, your future?" He slumped down. All his energy was like drained.

"Riya, marrying you is the only way for me to repent. I will take care of you, make you happy, give you a life that I took away from you. Please." Riya, shocked enough, tried to pry her hand out of Nikhil's grip. But he was not letting go. In despair, Riya started to scream and yell and hit him. Suddenly, someone released her and took her in his arms. Maan, who had found out from the watchman that Riya had gone out, had followed her. He had been worried that she was going out that this time of the evening and that too alone.

"Maan bhai, he... he killed him..." Riya sobbed into his chest. Nikhil didn't say anything, he didn't even protest when some time later the police arrived to arrest him.

When Maan and Riya arrived back at Khurana Mansion, everyone is tensed seeing Riya's state. Maan, who had heard Nikhil's confession, narrated everything. His heart broke, seeing Geet break into bitter sobs. With so much effort, had he been able to start a new life with her and now it seems that she had turned back into the girl he had first met.

Nobody talked about the incidence. Riya had been taken care of by Dadi, Divya and Naintara, Geet was with Maan.

"Why didn't he tell us before?" Geet asked Maan.

"How would he have told you, Geet? Sohan and you mean a lot to him. And he said that he caused the accident by mistake. True, if he hadn't fled and called for help right away..." Maan stopped. If that would have happened, maybe today Geet would not be his.

"He didn't know it was Sohan and your family in that car. I am sure he wouldn't have fled otherwise."

"I will never forgive him."

"Now, now, this is not the girl I know. Geet, mistakes happen and he did want to repent by marrying Riya. You know yourself that he isn't a bad person."

That was the one truth that caused Geet to forgive Nikhil and make sure he had a good lawyer to help defend him in court. Riya had been quiet ever since. Geet was worried that Riya would think negatively about marriage henceforth but her mind was put at ease when she herself come to her and said she was ready with marrying Vicky. It wondered everyone what had caused her decision but nobody asked. While the Khuranas were planning the next wedding, Vicky thought back about his visit to the jail where Nikhil was locked up. Riya had wanted to talk to him one last time and had asked Vicky to accompany her. While Riya talked to her culprit, Vicky wondered what Riya was made off. He had expected her to question Nikhil, to hate him or curse him. But her first words had been that she had forgiven him. Nikhil should start afresh once he comes out of jail and not stay tied back to old memories. Everything happened for something good. If Sohan hadn't died, no matter how hard it had been on them, Geet would not have met Maan who she had grown so fond of, Riya would not have met Vicky and Armaan's future might not be in better hands that in that of his new family. Nikhil had only cried, chanting only one word: sorry.

"Are you happy with this marriage?" He reckoned that he should have asked Riya this earlier but seeing her lost in thought, he couldn't fight the urge.

"I am fine, Vicky. Things have just passed in a rush that is how I feel. Half a year ago, my life was different, now I am going towards a new start." Vicky smiled, running his finger over her cheek.

"Yes. Things surely have changed. Look at Geet and Maan bhai. They couldn't stand each other and now, they are so much in love."

"I can't believe this. The happiness on Geet's face is something I haven't seen since quite some time."

Even Maan found that his love was happier today than she had been since long.

"Geet, care to tell me the occasion?" Geet frowned cutely.

"What occasion?"

"Why my sweetheart is smiling so much today." Geet blushed and shook her head. Her attempt to run away was futile because Maan caught her by her wrist.

"Geet, please tell me."

"Maan, I...I am...in love with you." Maan smirked.

"Well, I know that but thanks for telling me again. In fact, why don't you show me how much you love me?" Geet shied even more.

"Maan, ab yeh badmashi nahin chalegi. You will have to behave properly and be a good role model to junior." Maan looked confused and Geet laughed. She made him sit and put both his hands on her stomach.

"Congratulations, papa." Geet whispered and saw the confusion clear and turn into shock. Maan's eyes filled up with tears.

"Sach?" And he got his answer in Geet's smile.

For those who wonder how this happened... here is the paragraph I mentioned in chapter 38. Geet told Maan that Sohan and her family died in an accident where the driver of the opposite car fled. The driver of the other car was never found (Some of you already smelled foul play, well done!):

"They all died." Geet whispered back. This was probably the most difficult thing for Geet to talk about but one day or the other she had to.

"Dad, mom, Rajji, Sohan and Sohan's dad who started MC were driving in a car. They were on their way to a wedding when they got into an accident and..." Maan engulfed Geet in his embrace, wanting her to pour out her sorrow.

"Rajji, maa, papa and dad (Sohan's father) died on the spot. Sohan was badly injured and brought to the hospital. I reached in time to talk to him a last time before he died...in my arms." Maan rubbed Geet's back, feeling the sobs rattle through her body. His eyes filled with water, hearing what all she had to go through.

"How did the accident happen?"

"The police don't know exactly but they think that someone must have driven into the car and then fled."

Maan was once betrayled by Sameera but I did not find it important to bring her into the story anymore...
