His words and tone stated that he meant every bit. Geet looked at the sergeant in front of her. Her college boy was lost, here stood a soldier; A tough soldier. And her heart swelled. She owed him answers. After all that they had gone through and after all that he had done for her in the last twenty four hours; this was the least she could do.
She let go of his arms, staring into the distance.
He too let her go, giving her the space to express herself. The past was too heavy for her to reminisce and if she opened up to him now, she would have to go through each and every moment again. So she created some distance between them in order to prepare herself.
------------------------------
Came her reply as a mere whisper. If only that time had passed by like a whisper; leaving them whole, unharmed, unscarred! But that had not to be….
"I had told you then that my family was rigid, they were after all aristocrats of Lahore. They did send me across to New York to complete my education but that was for their own political gain on women's empowerment propaganda. I came to New York, as a part of their interest. And there, when I had only expected to have a good time, study hard, gain my degree and return home quietly; life twisted again. And I met you; we fought, we became friends and again fought...only to realize we had come a long way in our relationship breaking all barriers."
She smiled faintly as she recalled their life back then.
"We were so happy together Maan, it all felt like a dream, a chasm of happiness, a bubble that would burst. And it did one day. I had forgotten who I was and where we belonged. I had forgotten that dreams were meant to be broken."
She looked up to him this time; a wry smile dancing on her lips but never reaching her eyes which were solely pain's paradise.
"You never mentioned our national differences or your family being a problem ever. I always took it for granted that somehow we would manage and convince our families."
Maan interrupted breaking her trance talk, giving her a breather.
"I didn't think too or rather I didn't want to. Mishty had found so much happiness with you that Geet, she refused to think about her family, until that day after my graduation."
She recalled the fateful day when she had been happiest one moment, when she got her degree in English Literature and hit the abyss of shock and sorrow the next when her father had called up.
Tears rolled down her eyes on recollection of those dreadful moments when she had to decide between their love and his life.
It's true, deciding is much more difficult a task than implementing because then you have already lived the decision.
"If I as much as see him around you, he will be dumped in a place where his body will rot forever. And I mean it, not a soul will know. "
Her father's menacing voice shook her.
"Geet you are to stay away from him. I want you back home safe and sound, not a scratch on your body otherwise the man will bear the brunt. I will destroy him. I will destroy his family, his country. Kargil may be over but I can well reopen their wounds. And you very well know I can"
Snarling, her father had cut the phone off.
He hadn't congratulated her; neither had he asked her wellbeing. But that didn't matter to her. The only thing that haunted her was her father's thick menacing voice;
'He will be dumped in a place where his body will rot forever'
'I will destroy him. I will destroy his family, his country.'
No!
"A life saved is a war prevented"
Her Nani's words came back to her.
Today she understood what she hadn't then.
A mystery was unraveled in front of her.
Her and Maan's fate was woven between two countries; their breaking apart would heal the two countries reeling in aftermath of Kargil.
She knew her father was capable of reviving those wounds. Peace would never be restored between the two warring countries, and that her father would make sure. He was a vengeful man, her father, she knew….
She knew her father's power and his intentions.
Moreover, she couldn't live with the burden of two countries at war and her Maan not with her, not in this world to breathe in the same air has hers. The dilemma was choking her. She wanted to run away but there was no escape. She was trapped, trapped in a conflict of motives where she would lose at both ends. An Avoidance-Avoidance conflict; where she had to chose one way.
"But At least you'll be on the same planet as I;
At least you'll breathe the same air as I.
At least you will live and our countries will reel out of Kargil…."
"It wasn't only about you or I then, it was about our countries, about thousands of those tired soldiers, about millions of our populace. My father had the power and the intentions….He could have….And, you were much more important to me than anything else, even than your love."
She sighed and he clenched his fist even more tightly if that was possible.
The swine of a man had used politics to torment his daughter, to torture their love! Only if I could get my hands around his cursed throat!
Maan thought angrily.
He wasn't able to read through her eyes then, he couldn't see through her facade then, neither could he soothe her now when she was shattered.
"How could your own father do that to you?"
He said in utter disbelief as to how could her father not see her feelings if he knew about them.
"My mother left me too early and men in my family cared less until they had to develop their party's block on women's empowerment. I was their bait. I hadn't been the most preferred child of my father. Maybe, because of my name. Geet. Maybe because I was the only one who would accompany mother to India. Maybe because….I have tried to think through all these years that why wasn't I his favorite? Why he never loved me? "
She murmured in a low voice, the inner neglected child springing out crying. Maan could only try to absorb her pain as he saw a broken little girl crying for her father. But again the maturity took over her, like it always had.
"They used me tactically to show their public how well they respected girls and their independence. But I don't regret their decision to send me abroad. Because that gave me you."
She told him, now much more at ease than before.
Going back in retrospect with him by his side had given her strength more than anything else. She had endured a lot but now she could rest in peace, knowing that she had undid her biggest mistake, fate had given her a chance to confess the truth to him, her love to him and she had grabbed that. Her heart was lightened; the biggest boulder had been picked off. She could happily die the very next minute and not complain to god even once.
"But how did you end up in a Mujahedeen camp in India?"
His question scared her more than shocking. She had bared all her past in front of him except this; because she herself was ashamed and disgusted of what had happened that she couldn't tell him. She just couldn't, she thought looking away.
How could she tell him that her own brother had sold her?
How could she tell him she was violated, manipulated and torn every day; every freaking moment?
How could she tell him what she had faced at the hands of men-faced wolves that were only fit for hell?
"Geet,"
He called out softly.
"I want you to know love that whatever it is that has happened, it will make no difference to me or to my love."
He said reassuringly.
But that was the last thing on her mind. She knew him too well to doubt his love and faith in her but this subtle confession of his made her heart swell with pride and joy.
"You need to say it out love, please tell me; for once let it go."
He pleaded, trying to get her out of the self imposed prison she had locked herself into.
She knew he was the only one in front of whom she could open all her scars but she also knew what pain he would go through reliving those memories with her. And that she couldn't do. She couldn't hurt him; especially now that he had found happiness in her after so many years.
"Geet tell me what had happened? Did someone force you in? Who made you do this Geet? Just tell me once and I will burn the mere existence of that one who dared manipulate you."
Maan flared angrily, clenching his fist.
He had wanted to know everything since last night when he had discovered her plight but hadn't got a chance.
"Geet speak up! Please"
His anguish was audible in his tone.
Please lord! Please don't let me open up to him. He won't be able to take it. It would only give him more grief.
She prayed silently, looking down at the sacred Taveez hanging down his neck.
I can't let him know, please lord...
