Minal - first of all, thank you for the warm welcome. And secondly - i totally get your comment about the general public wanting mush. I get a lot of that in my stories too 😆.

The reason i continue reading this FF is because of the characterizations. The story is interesting, no doubt. But the way you have shaped the characters, the way each update unfolds more details and layers to each character is what keeps me hooked. Beautifully done.

This last update was - cute. After all the heavy emotions of the past, a little breather for the characters - and the readers. Looking forward to what India has in store for all of them...

Part 44

"I'm telling you this one is the best." Vicky suggested for the third time making Rohan about ready to strangle him.

"No, it's not Vicky! The construction is faltered on that one. This one, on the other hand, will provide the most suitable amount of support for a nice bounce. Besides you're a doctor, you won't understand."

"Excuse me Mr. Know-it-all. I'm not entirely clueless." Vicky rolled his eyes. "And the color on this is better since it provides contrasts, it will suit perfectly."

Rohan shook his head, "From what angle Vicky! She's wearing purple...and this is lilac." He said pointing to the band in his hand.

Vicky gave him a look of pure disbelief and disgust. "Can you get any more feminine?"

"Are you two seriously fighting about her hair band colors?" Meera asked staring at them both as if they were idiots.

"You wouldn't understand Meera." Vicky said waving a hand signaling her to go away.

"I knew you were stupid but now just proved you're also blind. I'm a girl too so I understand completely well."

Vicky narrowed his eyes with a snarky face while Rohan just laughed. "Shut up dude and you…" He turned to Meera who stood against the opposite wall with her arms crossed. "If you're so knowledgeable why don't you pick the best hair band for her outfit?"

Meera moved towards the all pink vanity table and shoved Vicky to the side. She scanned through the plastic buckets filled with rainbow colored assortment of ties, bows, ribbons and clips then glanced between a highly disinterested Piyu, her outfit and the items in front of her before finally making a choice.

"This one...her hair will look gorgeous in this striped bow." Rohan smacked his head while Vicky groaned. It seemed they weren't going to get anywhere.

Geet and Maan leaned outside against the door and smiled watching them. "What have we done Maan?"

"Us? It was their idea Geet. They wanted to show us they aren't immature." Maan stated extra defensively since it was really his idea. He figured if he shoved them altogether he'd manage to get some time with Geet alone. But alas, they caused problems no matter if they were together or not.

"I know but you seriously shouldn't have put Piyu in their hands. By tomorrow she'll be one of them." Geet laughed.

Peeking inside Maan saw Piyu's tinge rising and knew Geet was right. Five minutes tops he thought before she exploded. "I agree."

Geet concurred and checked the time on her watch. "I think I will have to take over to get to the party on time." She looked over Maan and couldn't believe it. "You're not ready either! Go change we have to leave soon!"

As she turned away to walk inside Maan tugged her wrist and pulled her against the wall. "What about me?"

Seeing the glint in his eyes Geet's lips upturned ever so slightly. Once his hands moved up along to rest by either side of her head she leaned in towards him. "What about you?"

His eyes travelled between her twitching lips and glimmering eyes. "Aren't you going to help me get ready?"

"I didn't know the great Maan Singh Khurana needed aid in getting dressed." Geet teased.

Bending closer Maan glided his nose along her cheek as he spoke into her ear. "He always needs Dr. Handa's aid." The combination of his soft touch and warm breath basking her already tingling skin was absolute sweet torture for Geet. She searched for her voice to retort back but all was lost in blissful sensations.

As he traced his way from her cheek to the ridge of her perfectly shaped nose Geet closed her eyes out of coyness causing Maan's smile to deepen. Hovering right above her lips he spoke the honest marvelous truth. "I always need you." Seeing those pretty petals bloom into a smile he bent in to kiss them.

Geet's arms on their own accord encircled his waist as he gently brushed her lips. With all her defenses weakened she gave in and kissed him back without reserve. Their delightful spell would have continued had it not been for an abrupt sharp scream proclaiming stop.

Maan immediately took a step back from Geet and searched for Piyu as her voice had reached their eardrums loud and clear but he saw no one. Realizing she was screaming at someone inside he groaned to which Geet gave a bemused smile. "I should go before Piyu pulls out her pink bat again."

"It's actually not a bad idea to straighten them out." He stated miffed at the fact they ruined what little time he and Geet had once again. She smacked his arm playfully and shoved him in the direction of his room. "Go get ready Maan or else I'll get a bat for you!"

He winked at her smirking. "I wouldn't mind one bit." She blushed and began screaming at him again. "Maan!" Laughing he took long strides in the direction of his room.

Shaking her head she went in and quickly got Piyu ready. Apparently she wasn't a fan of Uncle Vicky's hairstyle and despite her protests he continued causing all the commotion. The guys gladly left having had enough while Meera stuck around to help Geet.

Once ready they all made their way to the park for the office's 4th of July picnic. Maan hated these things but Dadi insisted on having celebratory occasions to keep the employees happy and feel as if they were family.

While Maan made obligatory rounds with clients and his managers, the rest of them started playing games. Vicky went straight to the dunk tank ready to demolish Rohan only to have his plan turn on him.

Piyu was still upset with Uncle Vicky and wanted to be the first to see him get drenched in the water tank. Our ever smug Vicky gladly took his seat knowing for a fact he wasn't going to get dunked. There was no way his five year old niece was going to be able to accomplish hitting the target with the force required he thought.

Oh how wrong he was. Piyu, of course, didn't hit the target but accomplished the task nevertheless. After missing five times and having Vicky instigate her after each turn she had enough and ran towards the target and pushed it sending her Uncle Vicky deep into the icy cold water.

Seeing him swim up and sputter out water Piyu giggled joyously. "Just wait munchkin! I'm going to get you!" He screamed leaning against the edge of the tank.

She continued to laugh and stuck her tongue out at him before running away with Geet in tow yelling at her to be careful. Meera and Rohan laughed concluding it was most certainly the day's best entertainment and thanked a highly annoyed Vicky for providing it.

Piyu rushed over to Maan clung to his legs. Bending down with a smile he picked her up. "Dad you won't believe what I did!"

"Why don't you tell me?" He asked amused at her excitement.

"I threw Uncle Vicky in the big bucket!" Maan looked over at Geet confused. "She means the dunk tank."

Laughing he held his hand up to her for a high five. She slapped it back still squealing. "That's my girl."

"No, I'm not." She said shaking her head with a smile. Maan gazed at her with a questioning look. "You're not?"

Piyu grinned wide giving a toothy smile. "I'm Geet's girl." Geet blushed pushing a stray hair behind her ear whereas Maan was beaming.

Maan worried day in and day out about how to discuss his relationship with Geet to Piyu. For so long he tried to gauge her true emotions and feelings for Geet but it was difficult without being so blunt about things a five year really wouldn't nor shouldn't understand.

Now though it seemed he didn't have to worry about it anymore. Piyu laid out her heart's yearning all on her own and so simply that Maan really had no element left to worry about, not even Geet. He realized somehow the motherly side of Geet reached out to Piyu unknowingly and they only embraced it on both ends.

Soaking in the serene relief he lovingly smiled at both before letting a disappointment befall his face to entertain Piyu further. Turning to her again he frowned with a sigh. "I guess I'll have to go find me another Piyu."

She pouted and hit his shoulder. "I'm the only Piyu! You can't go get another one!"

"Why not? I need a girl too." He continued giving a sad face. "You have so many girls Dad!" Pulling up her left hand she began to enumerate. "You have me…Geet…Dadi…Mee-"

Geet smiled at how adorable Piyu was. Maan simply shook his head interjecting. "No, I need another Piyu all to myself.

"

She narrowed her eyes at him and put both of her hands on his shoulders. "What's rule number one dad?" Seeing him shrug his shoulders Piyu shook her head. "I think someone needs to go back to kindergarten!" Geet chuckled hearing her try to be so authoritative.

"Rule one, sharing is caring! You have to share what you love Dad!" Piyu explained in her best teaching voice. "Don't I share Geet with you?" Maan nodded his head.

"And doesn't Geet share you with me? He glanced at Geet who was fully scarlet now and nodded again with a smile.

"Just like that you'll have to share me with Geet. Okay?" She asked with a determined stare. Maan nodded with absolute amusement and said okay. "Good. Now put me down! I want to go throw Uncle Vicky in the bucket again!"

He kissed her chubby rosy cheek and gently placed her on the ground. She instantly bolted away and Geet was ready to follow had it not been for Maan holding onto her wrist once again. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Maan I need to go watch Piyu." She tried to unclasp his hand but he continued to grip tighter. "Did you miss Piyu's rule number one?" He asked with a smirk to which Geet only sighed. "It's my turn to share you. Piyu's had her fill for the day."

Unable to stop the blush that washed her face Geet attempted another route before it intensified. "Maan please, there are people watching us." He simply shrugged his shoulders saying I could care less. Geet's eyes suddenly widened gazing over his shoulder and she fidgeted further.

"Maan…please…Maan…its Dadi!" He instantly let go only to see her giggle and run away happily. Running a hand through his hair Maan couldn't believe he actually fell for that one.

Geet ran all the way back to the dunk tank only to find no sight of Piyu or any of the others. With a quick gaze though, she spotted each of them. Piyu was with Meera at the cotton candy booth while Vicky flirted with some brunette who was getting a drink and Rohan sat alone at a bench with the company of his phone into which he was screaming.

Her eyebrows furrowed in concern and she immediately made her way over. By the time she reached he was sitting alone staring aimlessly. After taking a seat next to him Geet's worry grew seeing him not even notice her presence. She gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "Rohan?"

Snapping out of his muddled angry mindset he plastered on a quick forced smile. "Hey Didi…I was just…"

"What's wrong Rohan?" She cut him off. He shook his head shrugging his shoulders. "Nothing Didi, what could be wrong…"

"You know I can tell when you are lying." Geet stated matter of factly. "Now tell me the truth, what's bothering you?"

He didn't want to ruin her day too but his sister's adamancy couldn't be defeated. "I got a call from London." After taking a deep breath he continued. "She nearly went into a coma again."

Geet didn't to ask who she was. It was their mother. Since Rohan had reached an age of understanding the pronoun replaced the word mom.

"Not surprisingly it was alcohol poisoning." He stated with bitterness and annoyance at how she managed to turn up and ruin everything.

Geet didn't know how to respond so conversed what she assumed would be a neutral statement. "Uncle told me about her problem."

"It's not a problem, it's her lifeline." Rohan snorted. "She's lost cognitive ability to the point where she can't even remember her name. What does it matter though? It's not like she was able to reason clearly before anyways."

Geet's expression grimed hearing him talk like that. "Don't say that Rohan, she is still our mother."

He lips coiled as an icy cold shadow passed his eyes. "She wasn't a mother and you know it. So don't sit here and defend her for even a minute!" The memories of what she did to them both rushed back bringing a sting of bitterness in his eyes.

"A mother doesn't play games with her own children! She used you to manipulate Dad and I as a way manipulate to the world she was a great mother when she was anything but to either of us!"

Although Rohan was the one their mother doted on, the love she gave him never felt genuine. He felt like a pawn in their mother's game used to only to gain an upper hand in every situation. Not only that, he solely and rightfully held only her responsible for breaking his family and separating him from his sister.

Seeing the pain in his eyes she decided to forgo further conversation on this topic. The woman had caused both of them enough grief Geet recognized so there was no point in hashing it up still. "I'm sorry Rohan…"

Hearing distress laced in her tone he shut his eyes and tried calm down. Unnecessarily taking his anger out on his sister wasn't right. "It's okay Didi." He solemnly stared at the ground before attempting to make her understand. "We can't forget her altogether from our lives but that doesn't mean we should falsely give her the identity she never took responsibility for."

Feeling the need to release some of his frustration he got up and walked to stand near a big oak tree. "I don't even talk to her anymore and that doesn't even bother her. So with what regard or affection do even I, the one she supposedly loved, consider her my mother?" Despite his attempt to shield his emotions the sadness he bottled inside seeped out.

Geet recognized it too well but they couldn't just throw her away the way she had done to them. Could they? Of course not her mind voiced. "I understand your point Rohan and please don't get upset with what I'm about to say." She paused with a bit of hesitation then let it out knowing it was now or never. "You need to talk to her Rohan. Not for her sake but at least yours. It's not healthy to be bitter."

"How can I not be bitter? She is the epitome of a narcissist who's never loved anyone but herself!" He retorted with disgust.

Geet sat silently soaking in his anger and spoke only once his heaving had returned to normal. "I honestly don't believe that Rohan. I think that she at least truly loved Dad."

His shoulders drooped at hearing the utterance of the last element in their tragedy. Despite recognizing their father had a great deal of fault in this situation Rohan still loved him because he loved them back always. It's true he could have loved them better but he still did unlike their mother. Yet forgiving him was something Rohan couldn't do. Lifting his head up to the sky Rohan smiled bitterly with clouded eyes. "Do you ever talk to him?"

Geet looked above to the clear blue sea and responded no. He turned back to her with sadness. "I do and I tell him only this every time. I hate him for leaving us but I love him for protecting you." A tear escaped from his eye. "If both of you had left me…I don't know who I would live for Didi."

Wrapping her arms around him Geet hugged her baby brother tightly and wept together reminiscent of the way they used. Just like then, the two siblings consoled each other for the sins and its effects of their forebears.

She always knew he felt betrayed and hurt by their parents but never knew the depth of the emotion, mostly because Rohan never discussed his feelings and partially due to her not being able to recognize his grief past her own.

The fact that he hurt pained her but the fact that she could have eased it by paying attention absolutely tore her apart. But the one thing she did know now was that the same mistakes weren't going to be made twice. Moving forward they would always have each other to live for.

Standing a few meters away Savitri Devi looked on concerned and heartbroken. "Every time I hear about what those two innocent children went through my heart breaks Anil."

"So you know a fraction of my pain. I watched them go through this but I couldn't do anything to help them." He took his glasses off and wiped away his wet eyes. "I love these two more than my own life. They call me uncle but I consider them my own children."

"What you did was more than any other soul would have done for them. Without you guiding Rohan, who knows where he would have ended up, we all need someone to look to in times of trouble and the fact that you were there for even moral support means everything."

He nodded stiffly vowing to do everything he could for them as long as he lived. They both quickly returned to their original objective of strolling through the park letting the siblings console each other in privacy.

Geet released Rohan wiped his stray tears then cleaned herself up. "We have come to far Rohan to wallow in the past. Regardless of what she did to us, we can't abandon her. It doesn't mean we have to pretend everything is okay but we also can't stoop to her level."

Rohan turned away not wanting to do anything at all for her but he knew his sister spoke the truth. Treating her the way she treated them would make them no better. So grudgingly he agreed.

Relief settled at the sight of his nod, it was discreet and grudgingly done but a nod nonetheless. Smiling she clasped his arm. "Now come on, don't let this ruin your entire day." They started to walk in the direction of the crowds lost in their own polar thoughts.

Rohan peered down at his sister wondering from what realm she came to not only forgive their mother who traumatized her entire life but also give her the basic empathy she never received from her. It was simply beyond him. "Why are you this way Didi?"

Geet was also lost in wondering, except her thoughts swirled around on how to repair the brokenness around her. Whenever one seam seemed to close, another seemed to split open simultaneously. It made the achievements they completed so far taste bittersweet. It showed the reality that though they had come a long ways, they weren't all the way there yet. That realization alone made her wonder if there was reachable. And then again what exactly was there? Was it a state of completeness with no disrepair? Was such a condition even feasible?

All she could do was wonder and would have continued to had it not been for Rohan's question stopping her train of thoughts. Looking up at him peculiarly she didn't quite understand what he meant. "What way?"

Seeing the utter confusion and innocence in her eyes he smiled knowing there was no one else like her nor ever would be. "You're too good for this world."
