CHAPTER 13
Savitri Devi had not been able to hear any part of the conversation between Maan and Geet, due to the loud music she herself had cranked up. She cursed herself for her stupidity, but then again, this was not the first idiocy she had performed this night. She, who had just a few weeks ago, prided in calling herself, "Devi Bonaparte" had turned tail and run off at the most crucial moment. She was going to rectify that mistake immediately. So, with a resolved mind, she turned off the TV, took a deep breath and opened the doors of her room to face the music and found her grandson bearing down angrily on Geet and yelling at her while shaking her like a rag doll.
"Maan, stop it right now." She shouted at him from the open doorway of her room. She strode quickly towards her grandson and pulled Geet protectively behind her.
"What's wrong with you Maan? Yeh kya tarika hua Geet se pesh aane ka? My God, how dare you yell at her and manhandle her? Woh mere kehne pe yaha aayi hain. Aapke bhai ki bhalayi ke liye aayi hain. She is his physiotherapist.
(What's wrong with you Maan Singh Khurana. What kind of behavior is this? My God, how dare you yell at her and manhandle her? She has come here on my request, for your brother's welfare. She is his physiotherapist.")
Maan was shocked at his Dadi's words.
"What!! You hired her as Dev's physiotherapist, but why? And why did you not tell me her details when she was being hired? What do you know about her Dadi? You did not allow me to investigate her, and hired her behind my back after blackmailing me emotionally. Did she ask you not to? Why all this secrecy Dadi? Did you not question her motives? How could you of all people be so easily fooled Dadi? I don't want to see this person in our house again." He was yelling by the time he ended his tirade and glaring at Geet behind Dadi's back.
"Bas Maan Bas!! Kaafi beizzati kar chuke hain aap Geet ki. Main Geet ko iss ghar mein le aayi thi."
(Enough, Maan enough!! I think you have insulted her enough. It was me who brought Geet into this house.")
"It was me and Dev who planned and plotted to get her into this house. It took a lot of hard work to get her here and it did not take you a minute to undo all of it.
"Aapne humse abhi pucha ki hum kya jaante hain Geet ke bare mein? Yahi sawal hum aapse puchte hain, ki kya jaante hain aap unke bare mein. Are you going to judge a person's whole character, based upon on a single sentence that you overheard. I thought you were a better man than that Maan Singh Khurana. Geet hume bata chuki hain ki aap ko unki party wali baat sunke, bohot badi galat faimi ho chuki hain. Aur issliye humne aapse unki pehchan chipayi. Hum aapse unke baare mein kehne hi wale thi par mauke ka intezaar kar rahe the. Haan aur ek baat, Geet nahin jaanti thi ki aap humare pote aur Dev ke bhai hain. Agar jaanti toh shayad yaha nahi aati."
(You just questioned me, what do I know about Geet? Well, let me ask you the same question, what do you know about her. Are you going to judge a person's whole character, based upon on a single sentence that you overheard. I thought you were a better man than that Maan Singh Khurana. Geet has told me that you misunderstood what you overheard her saying at the party and that is exactly why I hid her identity from you? I was goingto tell you all about her, but was just waiting for the right moment. Oh and one more thing, Geet did not know until today that you are my grandson and Dev's brother. If she did, I'm sure she wouldn't be here.)
Geet who had been standing behind Dadi grabbed her arm and turned her around slowly.
"Aap ko mere bare mein iss insan ko safai dene ki zaroorat nahi hain Dadi. I was just standing here to say my final goodbye to you. Miri aur main, kaal se yaha nahin aayenge. Par humare ghar ke darwaze, aapke aur Dev ke liye humesha khule rahenge. Bye Dadi."
(You don't have to justify me to this man Dadi. I was just standing here to say my final goodbye to you. Me and Miri won't be coming in from tomorrow. But, you and Dev are always welcome in our home. Bye Dadi.)
Geet turned around and started walking towards Dev's room to collect Miri.
For a moment Savitri Devi's mind went blank, looking at Geet's turned back walking away from them. Then she took a deep breath, straightened herself and followed Geet.
"Geet humari baat toh suniye bete.
(Geet, please listen to me?)
Dadi usse jaane dijiye. Why are you stopping her if she has willingly agreed to leave this place.
Maan called from behind.
On hearing that statement from her grandson after all the explaining she had done Dadi lost her patience and turned around to face him.
"Aapki problem kya hain Maan?
(What is your problem Maan?)
"Is she the problem or is it you."
"Yeh gussa yeh nafrat. Bachpan se agar aapko ko ek cheez se nazfrat hain toh woh hain losing control over yourself."
(This anger, this hatred. If there is one thing you have hated since childhood, it is losing control over yourself.)
"Is that it? Does she make you lose control?"
"What nonsense Dadi? She is the problem not me." He shouted.
Dadi smirked at him.
"And I rest my case." She taunted.
She turned around and started walking towards Dev's room with Maan right on her heels.
Dadi was about to enter the room, but she suddenly stopped on hearing Dev's dejected voice. She grabbed Maan's arm and shook her head negatively, asking him not to enter the room.
Maan glared back at her and tried to shake off her arm, ready to charge into the room. She held on tight and refused to let go. They both played tug of war for a minute, glaring at each other. Finally Maan rolled his eyes and nodded his assent and stepped back and decided to wait and watch along with Dadi.
"Toh aap kal se yaha sach mein nahi ayengi Di? Pata nahi bhai ne aap se kya kaha, par jo bhi kaha, bohot bura hoga. Bhai ki taraf se main maafi mangta hoon di. Woh bure nahi hain , bas gusse wale hain and he is overprotective.
(So, you are really not going to come here from tomorrow? I don't know what bhai said to you, but whatever it was, must have been really bad. I apologize on his behalf di. He is not bad, he just gets angry easily and he is overprotective. )
On the outside, Dadi raised a taunting eyebrow at Maan and for a moment he had the grace to look guilty. His little brother did not have to apologize to anybody for his rude behavior. He was mad at himself for that and even madder at the woman inside. After all it was all her fault.
"Aap jaanti hain Di, uss din jab aap humare ghar aane ke liye razi nahi thi, toh maine Dadi ke saath milkar aapko humare ghar lane ke liye bohot bada drama kiya, jhoote aansoo bhi bahaye, kyunki main chhata thi ki aap kisi bhi halat mein humare ghar aaye. Par aaj jab aap humesha ke liye jaa rahi hain mere aansoo khud ba khud nikal rahe hain. Maat jao na Di, please. Dev took hold of Geet's hand and held it to his cheek, a lone tear rolled down his cheek and dropped onto Geet's thumb."
Geet bent forward and hugged the crying boy. She so desperately wanted to give him the answer that he was seeking from her, but how could she?
Today, for the first time Dev had taken a genuine interest, when Geet had been discussing with Dadi about changing Dev's chair from an electrical to a manual one. She knew that he completely believed that he would never walk again, but she had seen a ray of hope, a curiosity, a possibility, for the first time in his eyes. She did not want to leave him. She wanted to be there for him, every step of the way. She had come to love this intelligent child very much and wanted to do everything in her power to get him back on his feet.
Tum mere saath chalo Dev. Main tumhara uss hospital mein treatment karaungi jaha pe main yaha aane se pehle job karti thi. In fact like I promised before, I'll get better physiotherapists then me for you.
Dev shook his head sadly.
Mere liye aapse behtar koi nahi hain Di, but I can't come with you to an unknown hospital.
(There's noboby better than you for me Di, but I can't come with you to an unknown hospital.)
I am a Khurana that the outside world knows nothing about. It's for my protection of course and anyway, I agreed to a physiotherapist because it was you. If it's not you then it can be nobody else.
Maan finally had enough of the drama inside and walked into the room, inspite Dadi's protest.
"You don't need her Dev. I'll get you the best possible physiotherapists in the world, if need be."
Dev glared at his brother for interrupting him and rubbing salt on his wounds. He adored his older brother. He never ever back answered to him. But right now he was mad at his brother as never before.
"Are you deaf bhai? After listening in to the whole conversation, you still have no clue what I need, no clue at all. I am never ever going to see the face of a physiotherapist again. And that is a promise. Oh! What is it that you say, a man's word is his bond right, so consider that my bond bhai. With that, he went into his bedroom, where Miri was watching 'Brave' for the millionth time.
Geet was in a dilemma. She glared at the man before her. It was all his fault. He returned her glare with interest. It was all her fault. Dadi entered the room before the glares turned into a hostile sparring match.
"Geet I am sorry bete. I am really, really sorry."
"Aap iss ladki se kyun maafi maang rahi hain dadi? Yeh aapko shobha nahi deta aur na yeh iss layak hain?"
(Why are you apologizing to her Dadi. Neither does it suit your dignity, nor is she worth apologizing to?)
Dadi was amazed at her grandson's ability to put his foot in his mouth without even trying and turned to glare at him.
Geet lost the last thread of patience she'd been holding on to and screamed at him.
AAAHHH !! YOU JUST SHUT THE HELL UP. BHAAD MEIN JAO TUM. TUM'TUM'
"Kaash..Kaash iss waqt main koi acchi si galiya jaanti. Sab aapke upar khushi, khushi nyochavar kar deti. But since I don't, jo bhi galiyan aap jaante hain, wohi meri taraf se apne aap ke liye aaine ke samne khade rehke dohraiyega."
(I wish..I wish I knew some really bad cuss words right now. I'd shower them all over you gladly. But since I don't, whatever cuss words you know, please stand in front of a mirror and repeat them on my behalf.)
"You don't deserve Dadi, and you certainly don't deserve a brother like Dev."
"Aap apne iss bade mahal me akele reh sakte hai. Main Dev aur Dadi ko apne saath leke jaa rahi hoon. Phir mandrate rahiyega bhooto ki tarah akele in khali alishan dewaron ke bich. Chaliye Dadi."
(You can stay all by yourself in this palace of yours. I am taking Dev and Dadi with me. Then you can pace the empty hallways within these hallowed walls, like a lonely ghost. Let's go Dadi.)
"Dev!! Miri!! Let's go." She yelled.
"Just try. And I'll have the whole Delhi police force at your door within minutes on kidnapping charges." He retorted back.
Dadi who had almost burst out laughing at Geet's comment about cuss words, rolled her eyes at her grandson's idiocy. Who was this guy standing in front of her. Where was her dignified calm Maan. The man in front of her was reacting first and then thinking. She decided to peg him down a bit.
"Par Maan bete, agar aap aisa karenge toh beizzati toh aap hi ki honi hain. Kyun ki hum toh police se keh denge ki hum apni marzi se Geet ke saath gaye the"
(But Maan bete, if you do that it will be an embarrassment to nobody but you, because I'l l tell the police that we went willingly with Geet.)
Maan turned around and walked out of the room to give himself some time to think. He could not think clearly with all the crazy people around.
Dadi knew that Geet was still mad at her and she had to address that issue and somehow convince her to stay back. She would deal with Maan later.
"Geet, I was trying to apologize before Maan interrupted me bete. Please rethink your decision."
A cold knot of fear tightened her stomach and tears gathered in her eyes at the thought that she might not be able to convince her to stay back.
Geet was still mad at Dadi for her deception. In fact, she was mad at the whole lot of them.
She felt completely betrayed by the one person she had trusted wholeheartedly. She was confused about the whole situation and how to handle it. She burst into loud noisy tears
"Daadi aap apne mote mote jhoote asoo rok sakti hai. Jhooti hai aap. Kyun dadi kyun? Kyun kiya apne aise.? Main aur Miri ja rahe hai. Humare ghar ke darwaze Dev aur aap ke liye humesha khule rahenge par main yaha dobara iss ghar mein pair nahi rakhungi."
She bent down and hugged Dadi.
"I love you Dadi."
(Dadi, you can stop those fat fake tears. You are a liar. Why, Dadi why? Why did you do it Dadi? I and Miri are leaving .Our doors will always be open for you and Dev, but I will not step into this house again.
"Nahi Geet bete nahi. aap aise hume chodke nahi ja sakti."
(No Geet, you can't leave us like this.)
Dadi clutched Geet with both her arms holding on to her tightly.
"Aap nahi janti aap ke aane se humari zindagi me kitni bahar aa gayi hain. Humne aapko apne saath rakhne ke liye yeh sab bahane banaye. Humne shayad rasta galat istamal kiya ho par hum sirf aap ka saath chahte the bete. Aap aur Miri saath hote ahi to mujhe aur Dev ko ek nayi zindagi ki ummeed dikhayi deti hain. Saare purane gaam iss khushi kid hoop mein kahi gayab ho jaate hain. Hum samjhayenge Maan ko. Aur hum aapse unki taraf se maafi bhi mangte hain. Woh bure nahi hain bete. It's just that he is overprotective where Dev is concerned aur woh aapko galat samajh baitha hain.
(You have no idea how our life has changed with your coming. I may have chosen the wrong path, but I deceived you only because I wanted you with us desperately. When you and Miri are with us me and Dev get a new lease on life. All the past hurts and pain just evaporates in this sunshine of hapiness. I will explain things to Maan. I also apologize on his behalf to you. He is not a bad man, it's just that he is overprotective where Dev is concerned and he has misunderstood you.)
Just then Dev re-entered the room.
"It's ok Dadi. I don't think Geet Di aaj ke baad humse dobara milna bhi chahengi. I am sorry Geet di. Kaash main aapke saath ja sakta. Par main bhai ko akele nahi chod sakta. Mere aur Dadi ke alawa unka aur koi nahi hain. Woh khadoos hain par mere bahi hain, aur meri wajah se aise hain. Kyun ki who nahi chahte ki mujhe koi bhi dukh pohche. I love him Di just as he loves me."
(It's ok Dadi. I don't think Geet Di will ever want to meet with us again. I am sorry Geet di. I wish I could go with you. But I can't leave bhaiyya alone. You see, he doesn't have anybody other than Dadi and me. He is mean, but he is my brother and he is like that because of me. He doesn't want anybody to hurt me. I love him Di just as he loves me.)
Maan who had been about to walk back into the room paused at this brother's words and his heart squeezed for a moment. He'd do anything for his little brother, anything at all.
He walked into the room and walked up to his Dadi without looking at Geet.
"If Dev wants she can stay. But I am watching her, every step of the way. "
With that said he walked out once again.
"Thanks Bhai, you are the best, though I'm sure Geet di will disagree." Dev yelled from behind.
"Please Di please don't go. Please help me."
"Aaj se aap jo treatment kahengi, woh main karunga. Pure dil se aap ka saath doonga. Agar main nahi chal paya toh who issliye nahi hoga kyunki maine koshish nahi ki. Aur agar kisi din chal paya toh issliye hoga kyun ki maine aapke saath milkar koshish ki. Kya aap mera saath nahi dengi Di."
(From today, whatever treatment you suggest, I'll agree to it. I will co-operate whole heartedly. If I am unable to walk it won't be because I didn't try. And If someday, I do walk it'll be because I tried it with you. Will you support me Di?)
Geet could not resist that heartfelt plea. More than anything in the world she wanted to see this child on his feet. And even if she had to swallow her pride and face that overbearing man and his taunts, she was willing to. She was going to stay right here and prove her mettle and she was going to show him how wrong he was about her. She was not going to run away.
"Alright partner. Aaj se mission Dev-olution shuru. The evolution of a new Dev."
Dev gave a whoop of joy.
"I love you Di."
Geet hugged him and then hugged Dadi.
"Thanks bete." Dadi heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Pari knocked on the Handa's front door late that evening after an exhausting day. Her skin crawled even after standing under the shower and washing herself for an hour. She just wanted to see Brij, talk to Geet and hold Miri in her arms. She wanted to bask in Baba's gentle smile. Brij opened the door and she saw his ears turn bright red in the light falling on him from behind.
"Ge- Geet aur Miri apne kamre mein hain." He stuttered.
(Ge- Geet and Miri are in their room.)
She plastered a fake bright smile and started making her way toward Geet's room when Brij called out to her.
"Tum thik ho? Aaj kuch hua kya kaam pe? Aaj ghar maat jana.Yahi so jana."
(Are you alright? Did something happen at work today? Don't go home tonight. Stay here)
And that is why she adored this man. Though he was painfully shy around her and didn't say much he understood her best.
She just wanted to turn around and hug him tight and wondered what he'd do if she did just that. She did turn around but resisted the temptation of hugging him. This time the grin that crossed her face was genuine.
"Ab bilkul thik hoon. Aap jaisa bhi mard iss duniya mein hain iss baat se main bohot hairan hoti hoon'..aur khoosh bhi."
(I am perfectly alright now. I am amazed that there is a man in this world like you'and I'm glad too.)
She laughed as she saw the red that crept onto his cheekbones, wished him a goodnight and walked into Geet's room.
She saw Geet lying in the bed on her side with Miri pressing a hot water bag on her hip.
"Bohot dard ho raha hain Mamma. Kyu uthaya phir mujhe. Main sher se bilkul nahi dari thi. Aur phir woh sher bhi toh nahi tha."
(Is it hurting a lot mamma? Why did you lift me then. I was not scared of the tiger at all and besides he wasn't even a tiger.)
The laughter on Pari's face ceased abruptly and she rushed into the room.
"Geet kai zhala tula. Miri hot water bag gheun ka shekte aahe tula."
(Geet what happened to you? Why is Miri using the hot water bag on you?
"Shh!! Ordu nakos. Kahi zhala nahi mala. Baba ani Brij ugach kalji kartil."
(Shh don't yell. There's nothing wrong with me. Baba and Brij will simply worry.)
Geet shushed her.
Pari took the hot water bag from Miri lifted her onto her lap and settled herself beside Geet.
"Kai zhala saang mala."
(Tell me what happened)
Geet tried to avoid the subject knowing that there was no way Pari would keep quiet after just hearing the whole incident.
"Kahi nahi ga. Tu ugichah kalji karte aahes."
(Nothing's wrong. You are just worrying unnecessarily. )
Pari narrowed her eyes at Geet, who was avoiding her eyes.
"Miri bete, tumhari mamma ke pair mein dard kaise hua?"
(Miri honey, how did your mamma hurt her leg.)
"Arey Pari maasi, woh Dadi ke ghar mein aaj sher aaya tha, jo sher nahi tha kyun ki uski doom nahi thi, usne mamma ko daanta. Aur phir mamma ne mujhe uthaya aur abhi unke pair mein dard ho raha hain."
(Pari maasi, today a tiger, who was not a tiger because he had no tail, came to Dadi's house and scolded mamma. Then mamma lifted me and now her leg is hurting.)
"Pari was confused as hell about that explanation. One thing was clear though, something had happened. "
"Miri, shayad Daddu tumhe dhoond rahe the. Tum jaake dekho, aur haan apne mama se kehna mere liye ek cup chai banaye."
(Miri, I think Daddu was looking for you. Please find out out why, and also tell your mama to make a cup of tea for me.)
She thought that would give her enough time to dig the truth out of Geet.
She turned on Geet as soon as Miri stepped out of the room.
"Aata khara kai te saang ani kahihi lapavlas tar bagh. Chal suru kar."
(Now tell me the truth and don't you dare hide anything. Come on start talking.)
Geet knew there was no use hiding anything anymore. Pari was like a dog with a bone and she'd not stop bugging Geet until she got out all the details from her.
She started with the incident at the night of the party and ended with today's fiasco.
Pari just stared at Geet for a moment and then turned the air blue with a streak of cuss words Geet had never heard from her mouth before.
Pari had always stopped herself from saying out any of the choice words that had been added to her vocabulary in the recent years, since she didn't want anybody in the Handa household to hear them, especially Miri. But right now she couldn't hold back the crude words pouring out of her mouth.
"Mala shikav." Geet looked at Pari in awe.
(Teach me.)
"Kai?" Pari was perplexed
(What?)
"Shivya . Aaj jevha mala garaz hoti mazhya tondat ekahi shivi ali nahi. Mhanun mala shikav."
(Bad words. When I needed some today, I couldn't think of a single one. So teach me.)
Pari looked at her in shock for a moment and then shook her head.
"Kahi garaz nahi tula asle shabd shikaychi. Me atta tyachya jaate ani tyacha nikal lavte bagh."
(There is no need for you to learn such words. I am going to his home right now and I'm going to deal with him.)
With those words she stood up.
Geet grabbed her.
"Pari ved lagla aahe tula. Toh Maan Singh Khurana aahe. Delhi cha raja mhatla tari hi chalel.Gappa baas. Me nahi jau denar tula. Ani ata sagla settle zhala aahe.Aani mala Dev chi madat karaychi aahe.)
(Pari have you gone crazy. He is Maan Singh Khurana. You could also call him the King of Delhi. Just sit quietly. I am not letting you go anywhere. And everything has been settled now. Besides, I want to go there for Dev.)
Pari pushed Geet gently aside.
"Me challe Geetali.. Mala parvah nahi ki toh Raja Maan Singh Khurana aahe ki Daku Paan Singh Tomar. I will teach him a lesson about judging other people he'll never forget."
(I am leaving Geetali. I don't care whether he is Raja Maan Singh Khurana or Daku Paan Singh Tomar. I will teach him a lesson about judging other people he'll never forget.)
Geet grabbed Pari pushed her on the bed and sat on top of her.
"Tu kutehi zaat nahi aahes, he tharla. Nandechi thodi seva kar. Tevhach ti tuzhya saathi changla shabd takel. Mazha pai thoda chol na."
(You are not going anywhere, it's decided. Now serve your sister-in-law, if you want me to put in a good word for you. Please massage my leg.)
"Uth gadhve uth mazhya varun. Bara bara zaat nahi . Uth."
(Get off me you donkey. Ok, Ok I won't go. Get off.)
Pari decided to let go off the subject for now.
But in the back of her mind she thought only one thing.
Parinda Godbole shi gath aahe Maan Singh Khurana.
(You are going to have to deal with Parinda Godbole, Mr. Maan Singh Khurana.)
Geet laughed out loud as she remembered the tiger's tail incidence with Miri and shared it with Pari.
Just then there was a knock on the door and Brij walked in with Miri in one arm and a glass of hot chocolate in another.
"Ch'Chai itni late acchi nahi. Yeh hot chocolate pi lo."
(Te'Tea is not good so late. Have this hot chocolate.)
Geet grabbed it from his hand before he could give it to Pari.
"Thanks bhaiyya, just what I needed."
Brij glared at her and motioned her to pass the cup to Pari.
Geet pretended to not understand his action and took a sip out of the cup before grinning and handing it over to Pari.
"It's not sweet enough for me Pari. Ani mazha bhau zar asach mala ragane baghat rahila tar hyachatli sakhar nakki vish hoeel."
(It's not sweet enough for me Pari. And if my brother keeps glaring at me, the sugar in this is definitely going to turn to poison)
Brij left the room hastily after depositing Miri on the bed.
Pari looked at Miri thoughtfully.
"Tum jaanti ho Miri, kabhi kabhi sher apni doom ko, invisible kar sakta hain. Tail hoti hain par woh insano ko dikhti nahi hain. Mere paas special glass hain jisme se agar tum dekhogi toh tumhe doom zaroor dikhegi."
(Do you know Miri, sometimes a tiger can make his tail invisible. The tail is there, but human beings can't see it. I have a special glass, from which you'll definitely see the tail.)
Miri suddenly looked worried.
"Sach Pari Maasi."
(Really Pari Maasi.)
Pari nodded solemnly.
"Pari, stop it. Aise kuch nahi hain Miri bete, apni maasi ki baat mat sunna."
(Pari stop it. There is no such thing Miri, don't listen to your maasi.)
"Offo mamma, tum sach mein kuch nahi jaanti ho. Pari maasi aap mujhe woh glasses de do. Main zaroor pehenke check karungi."
(Offo mamma, you really don't understand anything. Pari maasi give me those glasses. I'll definitely wear them and check.)
Pari nodded and shook hands with Miri.
"Toh aaj se "Mission Invisible Tail" shuru."
(So, Mission Invisible Tail" starts from today.)
&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&
Sorry for the delay guys but have been extremely busy for the past one week. So, I have given you guys an extra , extra long update.😃
Ok I have a question for everybody.
Who can guess what Pari's profession is?😉
A short narrative:
I think my sister was around 5 or 6 years old when my mama came for a visit one day. He always loved teasing us kids. He was a tall hefty guy who carried us around on his shoulder. My sister got mad at him for something and shouted at him a new bad word she'd learnt from one of our infamous neighbor who had a very colorful vocabulary. That was it. My mama whacked my sister's butt and made her promise that she'd never say such words again. When she refused not to say it, he put her on his shoulders and threatened to drop her from that height and told her, when her head hits the floor hard all the bad words will fall out. She never did curse, ever from that day and whacked me when I was in the 11th grade and used the F word for the first time ever.😆
