PART 21

22. The Demand

The outrage he had felt at the beginning when he had learned that she had left to be with her family without telling him was long gone. It had been replaced with a strange restlessness, an anxiety that plagued him. An uneasiness that he did not wish to give voice to.

But today, even as the documents before him mocked him for his presumptions, he knew what he had been just a nagging intuition was turning true.

They took him back to the last time they had talked and the question he couldn't answer...

"You don't trust me Maan , do you?" But she didn't give him time to formulate an answer to pacify her.

"Truth and trust is very essential in any relationship.. and for marriage trust and fidelity..." her eyes that held his closed for a moment as she paused "You find me unworthy of your trust and think that I am capable of cheating on you..." Pain flashed by in her eyes, despite her attempts to hold it back... " Then what will be the base of this marriage... this acceptance?"

"I don't know what prompted you to take this decision all of a sudden... Dadi's wish? An unresolved attraction, Lust?" her breath hitched up in a beat, "a sense of injustice on my behalf and perhaps even sympathy.." her lips twitched in a sad smile. " It might have been enough... no I don't know... may be I would have seetled for your decision if you had not doubted my dedication yet again..."

He started to speak but she cut him off with by holding her palm up.

"No, Maan I don't want a long drawn out argument... And since you have had your say in all these months, I believe it is my turn." She paused wondering where and how she had gained this will to refute him. But then that was how their relation began. They had seemed to be against each other each time they had met... rubbing each other the wrong way until the words of the arrogant stranger gave her the inspiration to fight for justice, be it against her family or against the stranger himself. He had encouraged her to stand by her decision when she was right, to be brave enough to overcome the social restraints to seek justice and never to forsake her integrity. If her challenging him came out as arrogance, so be it because to an extend he was the reason for her arrogance. The past flashed by when he had smirked at her arrogance, her ego that first day in the office and she had argued that he was mistaking her self-respect as arrogance.

Looking at him she could still see that old Maan in him, arrogant, brash, the Maan who couldn't see beyond his ' my word is your command' attitude. She could see the indignation rising in his eyes at her highhandedness, but she was beyond caring.

"Do you love me?" she asked

"I ... I.." Maan was unsettled by the direct question. He had not expected her to be so direct.

"Can't say for sure, can you?" She scoffed, "And you could never lie convincingly!" Her smile was sad, nostalgic. "But you forget, we could read each other perfectly. May be not so clearly now..but still..."Her voice was laden with emotions, " You don't trust me... and without trust love cannot survive .. and without love, our marriage will just be a responsibility. I find that I no longer want this marriage on those terms... may be I am greedy to wish for more. But after the life I had with my Maan, it would be a sacrilege to settle for a mere obligation ..I want it all your admiration, your trust, your respect... Your love. May be it is too much to ask ... may be I am a fool not to grab whatever you offer..." her voice steadied with determination, " but this is what I choose...You are free of any commitment to me...I don't want to be a compromise to ease your guilt... it is all or nothing and that is the only way I wish to have you back."

As he was still gripped in the perplexity of her choice, she turned to move away. She swayed on her feet as if the final bravado had drained her off all her strength. He caught her close.

"Geet..."

Even as her body felt too limp to hold itself upright, she tried to push away. "Let me go! I don't want your support.."

"Hold still." He commanded looking at her pale face. "You will have to take my support, whether you wish it or not... you are exhausted."

"Yes I am tired... because of you," she retorted, but rested her head on his shoulders as he carried her to the sofa. "Tired listening to your arguments... tired of your misunderstandings... of your sudden disappearances... Tired of this constant bickering. I want to go home."

So he had decided to give the rest she needed and to broach the subject again later. He had thought she was too exhausted to think clearly and understand the wisdom of his decision. He had never seen her like this before... sad in a moment, arrogant at the next and indifferent at the end. It was her indifference that nagged at him... as if her hopes were dead, as if she no longer cared.

She had avoided him the next day taking leave from the office and making excuses at the table. He had been so sure that given time she would go with his decision that she would realize that his suggestion was the best solution.

But instead of realizing the wisdom of his decision, she had just left him without a word. He had returned home from office and had found her gone! Noticing her absence he had asked Dadi about it and to his dismay Dadi had refused to give him a proper answer at first. She had let him stew for the whole night before letting it slip that Geet had gone to visit her relatives, that too in an instruction to Nakul. He understood Dadi's anger at him, he dreaded her reaction if she knew the extent of torment he had put Geet thru.

He had tried not to be concerned about her leaving without telling him, to tell himself that he should not be affected so when she was playing tit for tat for his leaving without telling her. He tried to cajole himself that this was probably what she needed for now, some time away from him... some space ... let her enjoy her time with her family without his interference... She would come back refreshed and ready to hear his side.

He had tried to ignore her absence immersing himself in work, pushing away the thoughts of her whenever they tried to intrude. But there was no escaping her at night. In the silence of the night, he was reminded of her .. his dreams were filled with her, the tears in her eyes. And he realised he couldn't remember the last time he had seen her happy...

The memory of their last meeting taunted him. The exhaustion in her seemed more than physical... it was as if he had broken her spirit. And that last image of her standing by the window of the outhouse looking at him as he was leaving for the office... the day she had left. The haunting memory of the resignation in her stance tinted with sadness and determination. For a moment he was caught in the pull of her eyes... Locked into hers, he had felt his heart accelerate as if the connection transported him to another time... A flash of her thru the window behind the fluttering curtains, her eyes searching for him .. "Ab Zindagi ke har subah tumse shuru ..har raat tum par khatam."

He had staggered back, closing his eyes to bring back the moment that flashed by...but it was blocked and so was she. She had shut the window..

Now, thinking back to that moment it seemed like she had shut him out... Was that what had put the uneasiness in him? Maybe that was the beginning. But then she had not called him even once as days passed and he couldn't shake of the feeling that her absence meant more than a merely visiting her family. The apprehension that this was her attempt to act on her decision, to give him the freedom from the marriage she considered would be a mere obligation to him... was it? If it was, then why would he feel so disturbed about her not calling to let him know of her well being... why should it bother him that she didn't consider that he would miss her, that he would wish to hear her voice?

But he did, neither the work nor being dreadful in office and home helped. Finally irritated by the knowing looks of Dadi he decided to take action... he had put in extra hours in the office to finish up the pending work that needed immediate attention. He had decided to brave her family and pay her a surprise visit. He wanted to bring her back from Amritsar, back to where she belonged ... with him.

But his plans lay thwarted... by the documents delivered by their legal advisor. Geet had transferred back all the shares that she co-owned with him... she had signed the documents releasing claims to all the privileges' she enjoyed as Khurana Bahu and the wife of Maan Singh Khurana.

He realized her visiting her family was no longer a temporary separation, she meant it meant it to be more than that.

it was taking me forever to type it out...so am posting until at the point it seems intruiging 😉.
i am toying with something for SR, FINALLY 😃...
ummm...hope i have no disappointed any by this decision of Geet to give Maan some space... from the comments on the last update, this seemed to be much in demand 😆😆 TIme for Maan babau to get his act together, don't you think?
