PASSION
The next morning, Geet woke up later than usual. Maan had left in the early hours of the morning, after relishing her cooking and she had fallen asleep late. As she opened her eyes and stretched her stiff limbs to prepare herself for another day, she saw her mother sitting at the foot of her bed.
Geet sat up in bed quickly staring at Rano, who was sitting with her head bent low and her face red and swollen. She stared at her mother strangely and said in a low voice, "Maa?"
Rano snapped her head up and stared at her daughter who was shocked to see her swollen tear-stained eyes. She moved forward and hugged Geet suddenly and tightly and started sobbing. Geet held her back her forehead crinkled in fear and worry as she asked desperately, "Kya hua Maa? Aap thik toh haina? Aapki tabiyat…" she trailed off, a new fear rising in her heart almost choking her, "Baba…thik toh…"
"Geet, I'm so sorry…for what I did to you last night," Rano whispered painfully.
Geet stiffened, her hold loosening on her mother. She had almost forgotten about the whole last night since she had been with Maan. And, with Maan it was a huge effort just to remember her own name, let alone anything else. Her thoughts were sinfully moving on to him again, when her mother's voice brought her back to reality.
"They told me they just want to see you..I had no idea that you'll be humiliated like that. I'm sorry beta..I'm really sorry," Rano rambled off.
Geet let her go, and cupped her mother's face in her hands. She spoke, in her usual calm and quiet voice, "Koi baat nahin Maa. I understand. Lekin, aap logon ko mujhse ek baar puchna chahiye tha na?"
"I'm sorry beta," Rano murmured, not being able to say anything else. She couldn't help feel more guilty about Geet forgiving her so easily and calmly. It just showed how much patient and obedient her daughter was and somehow, that made her feel even more terrible.
"Beta, is there someone you like? Or, someone you would want to marry?" Rano asked her, looking earnestly into her eyes.
Geet felt herself blush and the image of a smirking Maan sprang in front of her eyes. It was quickly followed by the way he had held her against the wall of her bedroom and kissed her, how his mouth had moved over her shoulders, neck, collarbone, jaw and ofcourse, her lips in the car. The numerous times he had picked her up, held her close to his own body. The blush deepened as her mind thought of Maan and only Maan.
"Bol na beta," Rano urged her, putting an end to her train of thoughts.
Geet, yeh kya soch rahi hain? Tu unse pyaar….matlab tu unhe pasand karti hain, iss ka yeh matlab toh nahin ke woh bhi tujhe pasand karte hain…he has never said anything of that sort to you. He has never made any kind of confessions or promises to you…phir kyun in sab baaton ke baaremein soch rahi hain? She felt an inevitable sadness cloud her mind, as her brain won over her heart and she lowered her head in submission.
"Nahin Maa…aisa koi nahin hain," the words left her mouth reluctantly, almost as if she was hoping for some kind of miracle to change her thoughts.
Rano sighed softly and patted her cheek. She stared at her daughter one last time and left the room, closing the door behind her. Geet sat in the middle of her bed pondering over what she had just said to her mother. A part of her told her she was wrong, but the more potent and logical part told her, that sadly, she was right.
Tu hi soch, she thought, as she went through her usual morning routine, I know, he has been enormously caring at times, he has scolded you, been rude for your own good, lekin, unhone kabhi bhi mujhse yeh nahin kaha, that he…. She stopped as the word "love" ran in her mind incessantly. He has never said that to you, Geet. Toh Maa ko yeh bolna ke there's someone in your life would be wrong, haina? Aur, agar unhone pooch liye ke woh kaun hain, toh tu kya kahegi? The last part knocked sense into her mind completely.
She knew she was right. Even if she told her parents that she had someone special in her life, they were sure to ask who he is, and then, her answer would sound so stupid. Thik hi kiya tune Geet…she told herself determinedly. But, it was impossible to shake the sadness and gloomy feelings that were residing inside her heart, threatening to tear her apart.

Geet spent the whole day thinking about these things, until finally, her head threatened to explode. It was 7pm and her parents were getting ready to leave for the temple. They asked her if she wanted to accompany them, but Geet feigned a headache to stay back home. She needed some serious time alone to herself to think about everything and sort things out. To top it all, the people who had visited them last night had called up and told Mohinder that they had liked Geet a lot and were willing to go on with the marriage.
Her parents had not told her anything about this yet, but she had ended up hearing the conversation. Geet had no idea what to think now. She knew her parents will probably consider the alliance, as she had given them nothing to clutch upon. That very morning, she had told her mother that she had noone in her life.
She shook off her thoughts, as her parents made their way out of the house, leaving her alone behind. Before leaving, Mohinder turned around and saw a downcast Geet holding the door and said softly, "Beta, darwaza thik se baandh kar lena…hum jaldi aa jayenge."
She nodded her head obediently and closed the door behind her. As she was about to make her way upstairs to her bedroom, the phone in the hall of the house rang loudly. Geet sighed and made her way towards her receiver, picking it up and dropping it almost immediately as soon as she heard the voice on the other side.
"Maa-Baba chale gayee?" Maan's deep voice washed over her.
Geet looked all around her anxiously, holding the receiver so tightly, that it started hurting her hand. She expected Maan to leap up on her from some corner of the house, and her eye widened as she whispered into the phone, "Aapko kaise pata?"
The next thing she heard was the phone line being disconnected and just a few seconds later, the doorbell rang loudly. Geet was not even able to lower the receiver down, as the bell sounded loud enough to make her deaf and continued ringing. She fixed her dupatta and ran towards the door, holding it open.
Maan stood outside, staring at her, one hand still on the doorbell. He held her gaze and walked into the house, closing the door shut behind him. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him, causing her to land heavily on his chest, while his body was against the main door. Geet gasped, unable to form words, when he stared at her face and asked, "Kya hua hain tumhe? Any problem?"
Geet didn't answer, and looked away from him reluctantly, feeling miserable. The last one day had taken a toll on her and it could clearly not be missed that she was stressed out and depressed. Being an introvert, it was difficult for anyone else to be aware of that but Maan knew how to read each of her expressions clearly. He pulled her closer by her waist and said again, "Kuch bolo bhi…maun vrath rakkha hain kya?"
"Aap yahaan?" she murmured, finally looking up at him.
"That's not my answer," he bit out, urging her to reply.
"Woh…kuch nahin…baas sarr mein dard hain," she threw the same excuse at him.
Maan grabbed her waist and began to move backwards, causing her to fall on the couch with a bump. He remained over her, not touching her body, but his arm was draped tightly around her waist. He stared deep into her eyes, long enough for her to lower her gaze and then, spoke in a low and dangerously calm voice.
"Never. Lie. To. Me. Again." His words came out sharply causing Geet to look up in alarm.
She stared into his face, which was now rough with passion and concern. The next minute, she blurted out without thinking.
"Un logon ka phone aaya tha. They like me for their son and want me to marry him."
I'm sorry. I was held up with some university work.😕
