Part 28

Geet was upset no doubt but understood at the same time what Maan was saying in the car ride over. There was indeed no point in worrying to the extent she was in that very moment. More importantly recent events showed clear evidence that sulking wasn't the right choice. She took a deep breath and let it go for the time being deciding to fret when the time came.

Maan was delighted to see this but wanting to get Geet's mind off the case completed he asked her to freshen up so they could go out. Geet gladly agreed to this opportunity because they had not spent any time together alone since the party. The weather was quite nice, sunny and warm so Geet wore a casual summer dress and together they left to have lunch.

"Where do you want to go Geet?" Maan asked as he opened the door for her. "I don't know Maan. What would you like to eat?"

Maan was so hungry he couldn't careless and stated so. Geet inquired if he ever had real New York pizza. Hearing a negative, she decided that little Italy was their destination. The little district in Manhattan was home to shops that were decades old and passed on from generation to generation. "You will love this place Maan. Their pizza is the best on the planet." Geet said pulling him out of the car by his hand once upon reaching.

Maan was amused with Geet's behavior. "Alright Geet, I will take your word for it."

An elderly man, who clearly ate more pizza than he needed too, immediately came over and hugged Geet as they entered. "Where have you been darling? I haven't seen you stop by in almost two months. Don't tell me you are cheating on me!" Geet returned the warm fatherly hug and laughed.

"How could I ever think of doing such a thing, Carlos? You are my one and only." She said with a wink.

"You're lying! Who is this? And where is my other darling?" He said gesturing towards Maan then looking outside to see if there was anyone else. Geet smiled at Maan who stood not knowing what to do but watch.

"Oh Carlos, Meera is busy working. We both went to the Hamptons for a while that's why we haven't been around and this is Maan." Carlos looked at Maan and gave a genuine smile. He wanted to tease Geet more about him but decided to wait and seated them.

"So what was that about darling?" Maan asked exaggerating the endearment which caused Geet to blush a bit before laughing it off.

"Initially after moving here Meera and I used to come here every once in a while. As time passed though Carlos and this place became a little family ritual we did every Sunday."

He smiled hearing that, it seemed Geet created a family everywhere she went but it was never the one she had always longed for. If only certain things weren't out of our hands he thought. "I bet you miss it every Sunday then, you should come by sometimes. Take a little time to yourself."

Geet shook her head indicating no. "Time for myself usually turns into me sulking about one thing or another. Being around people keeps my mind from warping back in the solitude." She processed that in her mind for a second. "Now that I think about it, I'm bordering the needy line."

"First off, don't use the word needy again. What you, I and everyone else on this planet need is food, shelter and water to survive. Everything else is a want to make our lives worthwhile."

Geet wasn't surprised by his chastise but by his answer indeed. Where those three things truly all he needed to survive? Something told her no, he needed much more. Before she could change her mind Geet blurted out the most important need she believed there to be. "In what category does love go into for you? Is it a need for survival or a mere want?"

He blinked twice to make sure she had actually asked that instead of an illusion he imagined. Maan's next thought was why she asked that and why it rattled him. "Why are we turning emotions into economics?"

Geet perched her elbow against the table resting her chin on the open palm. "Oh please Maan...it's a simple question." A simple question she was being a little to adamant with Geet told herself. Too late now though.

He smiled at her because there was nothing simple about the question or the answer. Before she dropped into his world Maan would not have thought twice about any of this but obviously things had changed. "My philosophy is that it is both."

Geet tilted her head quizzically which Maan understood as an elaboration for his statement. "To love one is a want. To be loved by one is a need."

From his sweet gaze into her eyes and the softness in his voice Geet understood his intention by use of the word one. It was the one person who knows us inside and out and accepts us as we are. Undoubtedly, it had been a difficult road for both of them, as is with many people, to find the one but eventually a time comes when it isn't. Geet wanted to say so much to him but couldn't find the courage to admit it all to him. Maybe soon she could Geet hoped.

"I must say you are very wise Maan. I'm now taking back my suggestion that you can be a psychologist, looks like philosopher might suit you better." Geet teased.

Maan smiled at the progress they had made. Of course, Geet was yet to say anything about her feelings but the fact she didn't look away once from his eyes spoke volumes. It was enough for him then. "Thanks but no thanks, I like my job perfectly fine." He said with satisfaction.

She could believe it, especially after working with him at home these past few days. In fact there was so much Geet hadn't known until then and now thought of all that she still didn't. "Understandable, now tell me about your youthful days. I know almost nothing about you."

How right she was Maan thought. They seemed to know their deepest secrets but everything else in between was a total unknown. "There isn't much to tell. I graduated from University of Delhi with my MBA and started running the family company."

"How insightful if I was an interviewer Maan! I meant something about your family, friends, hobbies…" Geet pushed despite getting the feel of him not being very keen about it.

Maan was tempted to sourly spout out the, you already know everything line but realized it wouldn't be appropriate. He quietly tapped his fingers on the table getting his thoughts straight. "I didn't have many friends growing up, at least not true friends. Some thought I was a snotty rich kid while some hung around me for the benefits. My youngest brother Vicky, Adi and Armaan were the only ones I ever trusted."

Geet's eyebrows went up hearing the word youngest. "I thought you only had one brother."

Maan sighed deeply. "I know I made it appear that way but I have one more, Dev. He's the second oldest in our family or in his language the one with no belonging. Dev felt it wasn't right that our parents expected anything from him because in his eyes I had been handed everything and Vicky got the free pass."

Geet frowned knowing how difficult it was to have family be so near yet distant altogether. "Sounds like classic middle child syndrome." Maan smiled sadly to hide the hurt as he spoke. "It was and I tried hard to connect with him but Dev held a lot of resentment….and unfortunately still does."

"You don't speak to him?" Geet asked not being able to eliminate the sorrow in her voice seeing his eyes glisten. Maan shook his head. "Immediately after high school Dev left for Canada to finish his studies. He never came back home but keeps in touch with Dadima every now and then. It sounds terrible but he seems happier away from us so I let it be."

Geet wanted to assure him that things would be okay between them but how could she speculate such a hope when she knew so little of their underlying relations. Instead, she asked about Vicky's whereabouts but that triggered another bout of pain in Maan's eyes. He knew Geet could see it clearly but didn't have the heart to answer anything about Vicky right then. Thankfully, Carlos came by with their pizza causing just the distraction Maan wanted to divert the conversation. "We didn't even order though."

"There is no need to order. Geet always gets the usually, right darling? Here it is, topped with your favorites and extra cheese. I hope you enjoy it!" He said joyfully then left them to do just that.

Maan's eyes widened looking at the size of it. There was no way he would eat that much even if he could. "Do you and Meera eat all of this? If so, I'm surprised you both look like that," stating the last part with his eyes roving her body.

Geet smacked his hand playfully. "We do exercise you know. Not everyone can be totally health conscience like you all the time. I bet you are going to run an extra hour because of this." She laughed while serving both of them.

Maan looked at her peculiarly. "You know I run? Spying on me are you now?" Her cheeks reddened hearing those words but more so because she the image of him doing so was still clear within her head.

Geet had woken up in the wee hours one morning and couldn't fall back asleep. She decided to sit in the balcony peacefully before getting ready. However, little did she expect to see Maan only clad in track pants jogging along the beach. His torso was glistening against the first rays leading her conclude he had been at it for a while. Something inside told her it was wrong to stare at a half-naked man but that wasn't enough to stop her or the smile that appeared on her face then and now.

"Okay, that silence and sly smile tells me you were spying." Maan said bringing Geet back to reality and blush even harder. "I was not spying Maan! It just so happened that I woke up early and there you were. No spying involved whatsoever."

"Fine, I guess I believe you. Maybe you'd like to join me now." He said trying to hide a smirk. Geet stated he was being ridiculous and turned her attention towards her pizza again not wanting to contemplate that further knowing she would definitely turn a few shades brighter.

Maan realized he had enough fun teasing Geet and steered the conversation towards general topics that were far away from family. They chatted away over the entire pizza without a worry about all minor and major troubles. They both had spent plenty of time doing that. Living freely, enjoying little things like this was where they hadn't spent much time.

"I must say Geet that was some of the best pizza I've had. I'm glad you brought me here."?Maan told Geet after indicating a waiter to bring their check. Geet smiled saying she was more than happy to do so.

"Kids, this one is on me. I haven't seen my Geet in such a long time and it was a treat for me too," stated a merry Carlos while walking towards their table. Geet and Maan protested but the old man wasn't having it. He cherished his customers who often became to feel like family and that was just the case with Geet and Meera. He told them to come back soon and give Meera his regards. Geet thanked him with a big hug and promised to do both.
