"Now tell me, do you honestly believe we could have a hands off contract marriage? You might not like it, but we will be lovers. Fight it if you want to, but what will follow is inevitable. No amount of logic or reasoning will help you from belonging to me."
She was afraid to agree with him. "You are wrong. I can control my desires...I won't let them control me."
But he just smiled knowingly, " keep telling yourself that ...still it won't become true."
His confidence agitated her. She wanted to protest , yet was not sure about how to go about it. She was still concerned about the way Maan could reduce her to a mere passionate woman by just a kiss. He was too dangerous to her self-control. But no matter she will find a way to overcome this hurdle.
"You are the one who is under misconceptions" she stood up. And before he could reply stated, "that is all I mean to say or hear on the topic."
"I accept that for now..." he too stood up. He started buttoning up his shirt.
When had that happened, she wondered. Did I?
"Yes." Came his husky whisper near her ear, making her realize she had spoken her thought aloud. She blushed drawing a chuckle from him. He tucked in his shirt. Watching him she realised suddenly Yash and Maan even dressed in similar colours like school kids. And he had the audacity to accuse her of not being able to differentiate them, when they deliberately tried to mislead.
"Why are you and Yash dressed alike?" she accused.
"We had a board meeting today. We Khuranas like to wear our logo colour to show solidarity." He looked around for his discarded tie.
"Talking of board meeting, I am still upset about the gift."
"So I understood because it made you barge in to my office without delay. So, you didn't like it?" He knotted the tie with expertise.
"I didn't say so..."
"Wrong color?" He ran his hand thru his hair.
"No...in fact I love black."
"I'm sure I didn't get the wrong size now that I have had the chance to... er..fully size up ..."
"The size is right too," she cut in quickly. "And stop looking at me in that manner!"
"Why what is wrong about the way I am looking at you?" he asked with a knowing grin.
"It is like you are remembering..." her gaze shifted to the couch.
"Remembering? Remembering what Geet?" he teased.
"You know what we..." She looked at him and then her gaze skidded away. "Oh! Just stop it." She moved away from the scene of crime to sit on the visitor's chair.
"Okay!" he said in mock seriousness. "Tell me what is wrong about my gift."
"How can even ask what is wrong? It is so completely inappropriate!" she waved her hand in agitation. "A boyfriend usually sends flowers and chocolates to his girlfriend...not...not a sexy dress."
"But I am not the regular boyfriend." He planted himself on the corner of his desk, facing her.
"Don't you try playing with words!" she said irritated. "Why did you send me that...that skimpy dress rather than the traditional courting gifts like flowers or chocolates?"
"I remember Yash sending Meera flowers," he said.
"So, why not follow his example?" Geet asked puzzled.
"I didn't want to... I don't know if I can explain it properly. I didn't want you to confuse me with him." He twirled the paper weight on the table.
"I think you have established that firmly now." She said dryly.
"I did consider sending you flowers or even candy but then thought since our intention is to convey a reason for a quick marriage silk and lace was better."
"I'm sure those present with me will not be surprised when we announce our engagement by the end of the month. In fact I am sure they will be betting how soon it will be!" she glared at him.
He chuckled, making her glare harder. "So what happened when you opened my gift?" he asked curious.
"I was so sure the box would contain chocolates, that I was confused by the black thing. I thought the chocolates were underneath it and shook it out." The slow blush that colored her cheeks mesmerised him. "There was no chocolate under it.. Then I realised THAT was the gift..." she closed her eyes as if in memory of the embarrassment. "But by then, the three high power representatives present with me had already got a complete detail of what you had send."
He smoothed back a lock of hair from her fore head, making her raise her eyes to his again. "Then? Then what did you do?" though the whole story seemed hilarious, he wanted to relieve her off the embarrassment she felt and he was sure she would never talk about it to anyone else.
"In my horror I dropped the thing." Her eyes were wide with the memory. "Do you know how slippery silk is?"
He coughed trying to hide his laugh. "I do." Then asked in a tender note "The puzzle is why aren't you?"
"I am a cotton person."
"As I found out today." His comment earned him another glare. "I love the look of silk on my woman. I wonder how we can compromise."
"You don't need to because I am not your woman." She retorted, angry that he could reminisce about woman in silk.
Leaning towards her, he tilted her face towards his with a hand under her chin. "Aren't you?"
She couldn't look away nor could she come up with any smart retort. The tenderness in his eyes spread like cocooning warmth around her. "I ..."his finger in her lips silenced her, though she had no idea what she was to say.
"May be not yet... not completely but soon."
His confidence riled her. She jerked her face away. He sighed.
"We agreed we need to convince people that we are in love and can't wait to get married. The plan was going fine until your fiasco with my brother."
"Don't start on that again."
"Why not? With that blunder of announcing that Yash is sending you sexy gifts, you have instilled doubt about the seriousness of our commitment. Now I will have to work doubly hard to convince people that we are in love."
"May be if you discussed with me what you are about to do in advance..."
"Why?"
"You promised that you will let me handle our relationship."
"Our relationship after marriage, not our romance." He retorted. "Between I love to surprise you."
Her phone beeped, "Oh! Look at the time I have a meeting in half an hour." She stood up to leave.
Walking to the door with Maan she caught a glimpse of her in the glass shelf. "OH! Look at me," she lamented.
"You look beautiful," he assured. Seeing the passionate woman whose eyes still held the sparkle of being thoroughly kissed.
"You wrinkled my dress." She accused.
"One can never accuse me of not being thorough." He chuckled. "Relax, Mishty. You look adorable with your wrinkles."
She sighed. "No more shocking surprises please Maan. If we need to convince people we are in love let us do it without scandalous gifts," she pouted looking down at herself. "And without wrinkling me."
"You prefer traditional gifts? Done!" he accepted. "But I refuse to accept the no wrinkling part. Not only is it my pleasure to make you look loved, I consider it my duty." He grinned cheekily, as if he was willing to take up his duty . That had her hurrying to escape. There was something about him that shattered her discipline, her equilibrium, her self-imposed restrictions and made her wish to feel nothing more than being a woman, his woman. Yes Maan was dangerous because he saw too much, deduced too much far more than she was willing to share. He exposed her to needs that she never knew existed and left her a quivering mass of emotions. He made her yearn to lean on him...
Another quick look at him made her feel that he seemed to read exactly what was going thru her mind. It was well written in that knowing smile that played on his beautiful kissable lips. She drew in a quick breath, not liking where her thoughts were leading.
"I am leaving," she said unnecessarily with her hands on the handle of the door.
"This discussion stands paused," his hand over hers stopped her. "WE will take it up at a later date, somewhere more private in leisure, without interruptions. That is a promise!"
She willed herself to control the shiver of anticipation at his words. Instead lifted her chin to make herself look at him straight in the eye, " I will look forward to it and rejoice in my victory of making you accept my point of view."
With that she made a hasty retreat, knowing challenging him further may make her lose whatever ground she had managed to gain. This way she could be proud that she managed to have the last word.
No sooner had she reached the elevator than her mind filled with a thousand wise retorts she could have made to negate his claim, scorching remarks and logical arguments. When she reached her office, the first thing she would do was to write them all down for further reference. It was too bad her brain slowed in its functioning when she was around him. Such was the devastating impact of Maan. But she would stand her ground and remind him of all the reasons why she should proceed with the original agreement. She would not let him sweep her into his arms and kiss away her intellect. If only she could manage to feel less attracted towards him, to be able to treat him as any other male she had stood up against and emerged victorious during the numerous client meetings and board meetings. She looked at the slim golden watch that circled her wrist. Darn it! Where was the elevator when she was in a hurry.
"In a hurry to leave?"
She turned back to see Maan leaning lazily on the wall, watching her.
"Look here, you have done enough to disrupt my day for today."
"Really?"
"Don't give me that butter wouldn't melt in my mouth look. It doesn't have any impact on me. In fact you don't have any impact on me." Somehow it was true, standing here with him he didn't seem so dangerous to her senses any more. That made her bold. She walked to wards him with determined steps. "You seem to be under the misconception that you just need to touch me and I won't be able to resist. Well, let me show you how wrong you are!"
With that she grabbed hold of his lapels, yanked him down and smacked her lips on his. Not giving him a chance to take charge of the kiss and thus make the chemistry set in, she quickly stepped back. Triumphant that all it had taken was a few moments to think logically to be free of his influence.
She pushed her chin up in victory, "See, nothing! You don't affect me a bit."
"I'm happy to hear that," bit out a voice from nearby. "It would create serious problems if my bride enjoyed kissing my brother."
Oh no! Not again! Geet wished the floor would open up and consume her. A quick glance at him showed that he was so riled that he was all set to have another 'talk' with her. Thankfully the elevator reached and the door opened. She dived in and quickly pressed the button for the ground floor.
"I have only one thing I wish to tell you Mr. Maan Singh Khurana," she claimed before the doors closed.
"That is a thousand less than what I wish to say." His eyes blazed. "But come on have your say. I am as ready I will ever be for your logical explanation."
"Thank god you are not triplet."
