Chapter Twenty

Learning About You

Near to you,

Present:

He was the ruler of this kingdom and she the reluctant, often absent, queen. As such when she walked into Khurana Enterprise, everyone was there at her beck and call.

She walked down the corridor, while her stilettoes made clicking sound with every step. Alongside her were her husband's top employees, ready to follow all her wishes.

Oh the sycophants and their love for him, she thought with disdain as she saw the rapt attention and the way they followed his orders.

"Ma'am do you need anything?" A fawning Tasha asked her, clearly trying to kiss up to the boss's wife.

"I am fine" Geet dismissed the woman with a wave of her hand, instead focused on Pinky the receptionist. "I don't want to be disturbed by anyone for the hour. Absolute privacy"

"Yes Ma'am" Pinky nodded eagerly, knowing that Geet was just as strict as Maan and in many ways worse.

With that Geet strolled towards her office, right at the corner with the great view, and right next to the CEO's office.

Some things never change, she thought with a reluctant smile, as she walked in to the room. It had been her office the moment she had stepped in and to this day no one else had been allowed to use it. The computer and other electronics may have been upgraded but the basic set up of the office was the same as when she had first worked here.

And as always the blinds to the room were open allowing Geet a view of the boss.

She saw the way his eyebrows contracted with concentration as he was looking at his reports, bringing a reluctant smile on her face. He will always work with the same determination, she couldn't help assessing her husband, single minded tenacity that refused defeat. It is both his strength and his weakness. It had been that same tenacity that had made him do what he had done with her, the betrayal had not been his aim but the side product of his ambitions of gaining her. Despite knowing his intentions I cannot find it within myself to forgive.

But despite her resent she couldn't hold back memories of a time when in spite of her pain she had found solace with him, a time when she had learnt to rely on him.

PAST:

Geet rubbed her forehead, trying to dispel the headache that raged. There was so much to learn and to do. Khurana Enterprise was beyond impressive in its reach but it also meant that there was a lot of work for Geet. One task done just meant that there was another one to tackle.

"How does he do it?" She spoke out to herself. "It is insane"

"Who?" A voice cut across. "And do what?"

Geet hurriedly looked up to see an amused Maan staring at her across the room. His eyes twinkled with mirth, which made Geet suspect that he was laughing at her.

She mentally rolled her eyes at talking out loud but to Maan she said, "Oh nothing. I am just talking to myself."

"If you say so" He smirked at her but just as quickly a look of concern was on his face. "By the way, are you alright? I saw you rubbing your forehead."

"Yeah, just a small one" Geet tried to underestimate her pain, feeling a bit disconcerted by his concern. Why does he care so much?

But it was nothing to the way she felt when he walked up to her and pressed his fingers against her temple, lightly massaging. The warmth of his fingers flooded through her, the current that throbbed between them flared.

"What are you doing?" She mumbled, flustered and tried to move back but his fingers stayed there, doing their magic. They were magically in the way the gently soothed out her creases and almost involuntarily she closed her eyes, unable to fight against the relief of his touch.

This wrong, her logical mind broke through, this is very wrong.

"This will make you feel better" He whispered to her, creating a sense of intimacy.

"Umm'thanks" She muttered before standing up abruptly. She wanted to keep away from him, get away from this sensation between them two.

But as usual she was Geet Handa and as such didn't let anyone make her get nervous, so she retorted, "Do you always give massages to your employees? Is that why your secretory stares at you with lovesick eyes?"

"Only for special employees" He smirked, knowing that she was trying to dispel the awareness between the but he wouldn't allow her to dismiss him. "And no, she doesn't get these massages"

"Oh you must give them to Adi then, it explains the devotion" Geet was in her element, caught in the moment of wits between them. It was subconscious, but she recognised that on some level the way they thought matched and they shared a similar sense of humour.

Maan gave a surprised laugh, as always enchanted by her. He loved this avatar of hers; funny and witty. It lightened his heart to see her smile.

He took a step closer to her, smiling down at her and said in a soft voice. "I am glad that you are smiling and happy." With those simple words he brushed his fingers against hers before walking out of the room.

Geet just stared at his back as he walked out, clenching the very fingers that he had touched. She could still feel a lingering presence. She brought her hands up and stared at them for a moment. What is happening?

And again she glanced up to see him. Just as he was about to turn around a corner at the doorway he looked back at her, giving a small smile which she returned without thinking.

PRESENT:

Geet was awakened from those bittersweet memories as she realised that Maan was staring right back at her.

Almost in a trance, both were unable to look away from each other. The glass barrier between them did nothing to cover the emotions. It represented the anger she felt that could not hide the way she felt about him.

She saw the entreaty in his eyes, as he let his barriers come down, and also saw the thirst for love that he had. She knew that he loved her with a blinding intensity; that had never been the issue. But how could she trust a love that had betrayed and burnt her?

It was that betrayal that stung and made her turn away. Don't lose yourself again Geet, she sternly spoke to herself, Remember that a moment of peace cannot make up for a lifetime of resentment. Look at the bigger picture, remember what you have planned.

She knew that he would come to her, so it was no surprise when he knocked and entered the room.

He raised an eyebrow at her before speaking in his controlled voice, "It's a surprise to see you here."

Geet gave a bitter smirk at him, "Really? Well I am one of the top shareholders, so I assume I have the right to come here."

"Of course you do" He sat down in front of her and leaned forward. "But to date, you haven't had any desire to be connected with Khurana Enterprise"

"Well'.maybe I needed the right motivation" She let her enigmatic words hang in the air between them. "But I really don't need to explain myself, even if you are the boss of this place."

Maan gave a resigned sigh, "This place has always been yours"

"I'll hold you to your words" She shot back, causing him to frown.

"Fine, have it your way" He got up but before he moved forward he leaned over her and let his fingers brush against hers, a gesture so familiar that it caused Geet's heart to splutter. "Regardless of how you feel about me, everything I have is yours and always has been. You only need to reach forward"

With that he walked out, leaving Geet to hold on to her pain and clench her fingers. As always his touch left a mark on her.

Why can't you love me a bit less? She wanted to scream, Why do I still love you?

But these questions had been on her mind for a long time now and she knew that she would never get the answers.
