Kehta Hai Babul...
Kehta hai baabul
Kehta a hai baabul, o meri bitiyan
tu to hai mere, jigar ki chitthiya
Dakiyaa koi jab aayega, tujhko huraake le jayegaa
Katega kaise lamhaaa, tere binaaa bataaa
Jiungaa kaise tanhaa, tere binaaa bataaa
It had been twenty two years to the exact when Geet had passed away, leaving Maan with his baby girl... Mahi Singh Khurana. Maan still felt lonely, upset and angry without Geet... she was his life... she was his soul, his heartbeat, his everything.
But, when Dadimaa had put Mahi in his arms the first time... Maan had remembered everything... every single moment that both him and Geet spent loving each other.
Now Mahi was exactly twenty-two years old. Her features were exactly like Geet's... Her smile, her musical laughter, and her eyes made Maan feel as if Geet was right beside him.
Khurana constructions stretched all over India... His business empire was the one of the strongest in the whole country. And he knew what kept him going... it was his Mahi that kept him going every single day.
Maan was protective over Mahi. He brought her up with his own hands... he changed her diapers... he held her hand when she was learning how to walk... he dropped her to her first day of school... He had been with her through every moment of her life as a friend and supportive father.
And now, today was the day Mahi was getting married to her love Dhruv Singhania... His princess Mahi was getting married to the man she loved with all her life... and the man who loved her with all his life.
Maan was sitting in his home office thinking about everything... To Geet... To Mahi... To how his life would be after his baby girl would leave him and settle in another house with her husband.
Maan's thoughts were interrupted by Ridhimma who knocked at his door. " Aao Ridhimma" said Maan. Ridhimma entered and she smiled, " Uncle... Mahi is ready..."
Maan nodded and he stood up. He walked out of his home office with Ridhimma towards Mahi's huge room. Ridhimma went in and Maan stopped at the door frame.
He saw his baby girl sitting in a red lengha at her dressing table giggling along with her best friend Ridhimma. Mahi saw her father from the dressing table mirror as he stopped at the door.
"Papa..." smiled Mahi.
Maan took a deep breath and he entered. All the girls made the way for him to Mahi and Mahi stood up. She turned around and said, " Main kaisay lag rahi hoon?"
Maan saw his beautiful princess... She wore Geet's wedding lengha. Mahi would refuse to wear anything else but Geet's lengha and her jewelry along with it.
Maan smiled, " You look beautiful princess... just like your mother" Mahi smiled and she said, " Can you put on my wedding bangles?" Maan nodded softly and she sat down on her dressing chair.
Ridhimma gave him the set of wedding bangles. He knelt down in front of her and he smiled, " My princess looks like the most beautiful bride..."
Maan slipped on the bangles on by one and his eyes welled up with tears. Mahi noticed the tears brimming in his eyes and she put her free hand on his shoulder, " Papa..."
He looked up at her with a smile, " Angel... Im fine..."
Mahi knew her father wasn't all right... he was upset... But he had to be strong!
He slipped on all the bangles and said, " I'll miss you princess..." Maan stood up and Mahi did too. She hugged him and she started to cry a little, " Papa... I'll miss you so much..."
Maan felt like someone was ripping out his heart... His very reason of existence was being taken away from him. His little baby girl that he held those twenty two years ago in that snuggly pink blanket, was now a woman that was completing her seven rounds with the man she loved.
Mahi cried in her fathers arms... he had been with her through everything and anything in her life.
He had taught her how to live, how to love, and how to laugh... just like Geet had taught him to do the same.
Maan broke out of the hug and he looked at his daughters red eyes. He couldn't stand a tear in her eyes... He softly wiped her tears and said, " My brave princess..."
Maan put his arm around her and she rested her head on his chest... " Chalein?" asked Maan. Mahi nodded and Maan walked out with her softly towards the top of the stairs.
It was so hard to let his Mahi go... but he had to. It was the duty of every father to let their baby girl go. He had no choice... he had to let go of his very existence and give her to another man who will love and care for her the same way he did for Geet.
They slowly walked down the stairs and Mahi softly sobbed.
Kehataa hai baabul, o meri bitiyaa
Tu to hai mere, jigar ki chitthiyaa
Dakiyaa koi jab aayegaa, tujhko churaake le jayegaa
" Shh princess... rotay nahin hain" whispered Maan shakily.
Mahi held onto the button of his sherwani and cried softly into his chest. " Shh.." whispered Maan. She couldn't stop... her papa meant the world to her.
They reached the bottom of the stairs and Maan led her to the mandap. She sat down looking in his direction with pleading eyes... Maan only wiped her tears.
Dadimaa looked at him encouragingly...
Mahi cried a little and Dhruv put his hand on hers. Maan realized he had to let go before he himself would not allow Mahi to go anywhere... Mahi looked to Dhruv and he only nodded encouragingly.
Maan remembered his wedding with Geet...Every round... every word... everything was so fresh in his mind...
The wedding had begun and Maan lifted her maang teeka and he looked at his princess becoming someone else's amanat. Dhruv filled the sindoor in her maang and she closed her eyes tightly and opened them again.
He brought the mangalsutra forward and Maan noticed the look of love on Dhruv's face the same way Maan had when him and Geet were getting married.
Dhruv placed the mangalsutra on Mahi and Maan had tears brimming in his eyes... His princess was someone else's amanat now.
Mahi and Dhruv stood up and took their seven rounds. Dhruv held onto Mahi's hand as they did their seven rounds. Maan looked at her with his heart heavy... He watched his princess go...
Maan didn't know how he would live without his Mahi... but he would happily give her hand to the man that loved her equally. Every step Mahi took with Dhruv reminded him of Geet's footsteps behind Maan.
Maan had taught his Mahi how to walk her very first step... and now she was grown up enough to take her own steps... It was so hard to let go of her... His heart was crying to see her go.
Tu suhaagan rahe, sang saajan rahe raat din,
Is khushi ke liye, har sitam main uthaa loongaa
Tere jaane kaa ghum mujhko hoga magar ladali
Leke is dard ko main sadaa muskuraaungaa
(baabul to dil se de rahaa duaa yahi
khushi ke saaye main ho zindagi teri)
Mahi and Dhruv finished their seven rounds and took the blessings of the elders. Dhruv and Mahi touched Maan's feet and he stopped them midway. Mahi looked up with tears in her eyes...
Mahi hugged Maan and started to cry even more. " Papa I dont' want to leave... " whispered Mahi.
" No princess... ab Dhruv tumhara khayal rakhega..." said Maan... It was so hard to say those words.
Maan put her hands in Dhruv's, " Mahi is your responsibility Dhruv... meri rajkumari ka khayal rakhna" Mahi cried and cried... it was so hard to let go of her father.
Maan was Mahi's hero... he was everything to her.
Mahi walked on with Dhruv and Maan followed behind them. It was time for the bidaai... the time that was hard for every father...
Mahi threw the rice behind her. She cried so hard and Dhruv put his arm around her.
Maan had tears rolling down his eyes... His heart was breaking into pieces, letting go the princess that he raised for those years so delicately like a glass doll.
Mahi turned around and ran into her fathers arms and cried, " Papa..."
Maan put his arms around her and said, " I'll miss you princess... I love you..." They walked outside into the driveway.
Waqt ke saath zakham ye bhar jayegaa
Pal guzar jaayegaa tu meri baat maan le
Yaadon ke aasare umra katati nahi
hai hakikat yahi, ab tu jaan le
Sumundaro kaa paani koi na pi sakaa
akela kharaa jivan koi na ji sakaa
Maan mustered up the courage to say, " Mahi... Mama and Papa love you so much... but now its time for you to go and make your own home just like your mother did with me"
Mahi nodded softly and Maan said, " My brave princess..."
Maan broke out of the hug and he put Mahi's hand into Dhruv's hand, " Please take care of her..." whispered Maan.
" I will papa...she is not only your Mahi... she is my Mahi that I'll love forever" smiled Dhruv.
Mahi said her goodbye to dadimaa and cried, " Bye dadimaa... i love you" Dadimaa had tears down her eyes, " I love you too Mahi... khayal rakhna"
Dadimaa let go of Mahi and she immediately went to her father and held onto his hand.
Maan softly smiled and he let go of Mahi. " Bye baby" said Maan. Mahi looked at her father and blew a kiss to him. He smiled softly and nodded.
Mahi went into the car and Dhruv shuffled in beside her. They shut the door and the car was backing out of the driveway and Mahi rolled the windows down to wave goodbye to her father.
Maan waved and saw his baby girl leave... leaving him and this whole house to himself. Mahi and Dhruv's car rolled out of the driveway and into the empty Delhi roads. Everyone left and Dadimaa put her hand on his shoulder, " Maan bete.. chaliye..."
" I'll come in a second Dadimaa" whispered Maan. Dadimaa understood and nodded and she went inside...
The night was quiet and Maan only stared into the distance.
Suddenly, Maan felt a soft hand touch his. He looked over and saw Geet right beside him... smiling the same way she always did. She locked her hands with his and he held onto her hand.
" Chaliye..." whispered Geet. Maan smiled... finally... he heard her voice again after 22 years.Maan nodded and began walking inside with his Mishti.

I was getting emotional about how my own rukhsati (bidaai) will be when I get married one day... and How my father would react...
I hope you liked it!
