Ch.4
Maan walked to his room at the fastest pace possible and pulled out his duffel bag from the closet tossing in the first clothes that came to his hand. He picked his phone off the side table and dialed a number as he raced down the stairs.
"Maan Singh Khurana here, I need my chartered plane ready in thirty minutes.", he ordered and snapped the phone shut.
Not wasting time in waking up any of the drivers, he pulled out one of the BMWs and sped towards the airport. He had to make one more call before he could board the plane and that was to his right hand man Aditya Chopra who was like his brother even since he joined Khurana Constructions eight years back. Even at two at night, Adi picked up on the second ring such was his loyalty.
"Hello Sir", he said in a groggy voice but Maan knew that his mind was alert already as he was used to get these late night calls.
"Adi, I am going to London tonight and I don't know when I am going to be back."
"Don't worry Sir, I will take care of everything to the best of my ability.", Adi reassured him.
Maan couldn't help as a rare small smile came to his face. That's why he always relied on this man because he knew he would never let him down.
"Thank you Adi."
"You have a good flight sir and call me if you need anything.", with that they hang up.
By then Maan had reached the airport and boarded his private plane trying to calm his nerves as he braced himself for the long flight to London. He closed his eyes as he remembered the last flight they had taken together to London to see the Rano Mom, Mohinder Dad and Pinky.
Flashback
"You know how much I hate traveling?", Geet asked as she paced the space of their private plane. Maan followed her with amused eyes from one end to the other.
"I would never get on a plane if that stupid Pinky didn't want to see me. Whoever told her to go study in London? Delhi has perfectly dandy universities but no, the madam had to apply to Oxford.", she ranted off not paying any attention to Maan. Pinky had gone to London for do her MBA at Oxford and her parents decided to shift there so she wouldn't be alone. Maan decided it was time to intervene so he walked to her and engulfed her in his arms to soothe her edgy nerves.
"Relax Geet..i know how nervous flying makes you and that's why I am accompanying my wife.", he said in a calm tone as he guided her to a seat.
"Now sit down and buckle up. I will signal the pilot to take off.", he said but she immediately grabbed his hand stopping him.
"Just one minute, I will be right back.", he reassured her with his words, his eyes and the gentle kiss he gave her on her forehead.
True to his word, he was back in less than a minute and sat next to her belting himself up. He glanced at her as she sat with her eyes closed chanting quietly to Babaji.
"Babaji, please keep us safe so we can reach Mom, Dad and Pinky safely. Please Babaji, keep us safe."
As soon as she finished her prayer, she started taking deep breathes in and releasing them to calm herself down. But Maan had a better idea. Maan quietly took one of his hands and laced their fingers together to lock their hands together.
Geet immediately opened her eyes and looked him.
"Just look at me and focus on our hands bound together. We will be together for everything. I will never let anything happen to you.", he promised and his eyes shone with the love.
Geet leaned forward to touch their foreheads together, "I know baby..i know", she whispered.
Flashback end
As soon as the pilot gave the green signal ; Maan ran out as he grabbed his duffel bag. He knew the Handas had sent a car like he had asked. He didn't want to see them before he had to. Not because he didn't love them..of course he did but because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to hold himself together when he was suppose to be taking care of them.
"I will drive myself", Maan said taking the car from the driver. The driver nodded well aware of Maan Singh Khurana's behaviour.
He sped the car along the roads he came to know well. One of the reasons, he always chose to drive whenever he made this trip because it occupied his brain so he wouldn't think about her until he had to.
Before he knew it, his car was at the place that he loathed the most but the person he loved the most there, his wife was a patient at Driftwood Care Facility. The young receptionist greeted him with a warm smile.
"Good morning Mr.Khurana...I am sure Mrs.Khurana is waiting to see you.", she said with her usual cheer.
"Good morning to you too Lisa.", he replied before he made his way down the hall stopping outside room 101. He took a much needed deep breath before he opened the door with a cheerful smile.
"Gooddd morninggg my Jalebi...now I know that you are mad that I didn't come to see you for two months but you told me to give importance to the business.", he said with usual cheer as he came to the edge of the bed to kiss her forehead before he sat down holding her hands.
But as usual she lay there with closed eyes unable to hear him; his beautiful once lively wife now lay there silently hooked up to machines and tubes, which were keeping her alive. His wife Geet Khurana had been a life support patient for a year now.
Flashback
"Geet, I don't want to leave you here.", Maan whined as he hugged her from the back giving her a warm kiss on the shoulder. Geet held onto his hands and smiled at him. Maan had been grumpy since Adi had called requesting Maan to return because of important business issues. He had been sour since not because he had to handle business but because he had to leave Geet behind in London. The Handas wanted to spend time with their daughter since they barely got to see her.
"I know Maan..i know but Adi would never call you back if it weren't important. And plus I am coming home in two weeks.", she reassured him.
"Yeah but baby, that's two whole weeks, that means fourteen days without you and I don't even know how to survive fourteen hours without you.", he said sadly settling her onto his lap and she wrung her arms around his neck.
"Maan, time will fly by and before you know it, I will be back in your arms.", she promised with a kiss. They reluctantly broke apart, as it was time for Maan to leave.
Flashback end
But she never came back into his arms. Two days before her flight back, Geet had been crossing the street from the mall towards Pinky's car when a drunken truck driver crashed into her. Doctors had done everything possible to save Geet but due the blood loss, Geet's organs had failed her and life support was the only choice the family had.
Maan had rushed to London as soon as he could only to know that they had decided to keep her on life support. Maan had no choice but to leave her in London as doctors said it wasn't possible to shift her to Delhi.
The family was living with the hope that one day Geet would start functioning on her own without these machines but Maan fought with a promise he had made to her years ago.
