Hola den-vaasis,
My take for today...also updated on page 1:
*************************************************
Dear Geet Writers & Directors,
Hello and well done today! I will however reiterate that had this been a normal episode, I would have been very unhappy with the current storyline. But given the happenings of this week, I understand how constrained you all are in terms of story & screenplay...so from that standpoint, it was a great episode.
Now I have no illusions that anything I write is earth-shatteringly new or that you read it. But, given that I love storytelling and am always only focused on the story arc & screenplay, the fact that you coincidentally fixed a couple of the loose ends I pointed out yesterday/previously tells me that somewhere in you is a logic craving storyteller too! Hallelujah! I guess the channel can only put so much TRP related pressure on you guys for the time being given the circumstances. Hope you put this little breathing space you have got to good use by doing the following:
1. Focusing on the character groW*H of the current supporting cast before more new ones such as Vicky or Sameera enter
2. Establish some interesting & engaging plot lines for the supporting cast that will take away the near constant focus on Geet & Maan's characters
3. Tying up the loose ends from the past few months
Let's break it down a bit:
Aa Laut Ke Aaja mere Geet:So...the episode starts with HSP (Hoshiarpur) walla Maan cutting wood and remembering Geet and also the guests gossip at the failed engagement. Here, you did right by reminding the viewers, again, that Maan is not angry with Geet this time around...just very worried. Key points like that are worth reiterating as not every viewer gets it the first time. In the meanwhile, as Geet is sitting in the park thinking about Maan, his own regret is "Itni badi galti kaise ho gayi mujse? Apni kushi ke aage uske aankhen nahi dekh paaya. Us waqt kamre mein wok kuch pareshan to lag rahi thi". Bravo...you used this opportunity to tie the big loose end from earlier this week. I wonder if you would have done this so quickly had the current situation not happened.
That said...I still have a major problem with showing Geet's character thinking that Maan has decided to support Dev & Naintara without hearing the whole truth from her. Why go down this path at all? Is it to give Geet's character a reason to focus on for Maan's absence? Why not have Geet's character think that Maan must be worried out his mind and looking for her...that's why he was not at the house when she returned? The current storyline could still work in this scenario plus it is far more consistent with the inter-character groW*H between Geet, Maan and their relationship. You did however partially salvage that by showing Geet thinking that she cannot believe that Maan would not support her despite Dadima's dialogue from yesterday.
Dekho dekho dekho...Paisa Phenko Tamasha Dekho:This was undoubtedly the best sequence of today.
It started rather harmlessly with NT continuing to influence Dadima against Geet. From a writing standpoint, you kind of implied that NT's filling of Dadima's ears was focused on Geet being selfish for running away, the Khurana family izzat being destroyed by Geet's leaving etc etc etc. I said "kind of" because Dadima did not come outright and say exactly what NT said to her. But based on today, I think it is safe to assume that not much more was said by NT. Then Dadima referenced Sameera with "Hamen Maan ki bahut fikar ho rahi hai. Barson lage unhe Sameera kho bulane mein aur aaj phir kismat ne unke saath wahi khel khela"...huh...say again...this was the biggest hint given thus far of Sameera's place in Maan's past. So...Sameera left Maan at a critical point too...maybe an engagement or a wedding? Given NT's smiling face, I can only assume that she had a hand in it somehow. That said, given Maan's talks about how he has never felt before what he feels for Geet now, I wonder if Sameera was his first crush. Well...lets see I guess. This new mention of Sameera's name also hints at her impending entry.
Then...a major peeve...what was with showing NT taking Dadima towards her room, leaving her half way to walk on her own, turn and face the camera for some self-congratulatory thoughts? Could you not have shown NT's thoughts while she was walking Dadima the whole way to her room? Kuch zyada Kekta influenece nahi ho gaya...boliye?
Moving on to the high point of today...the NT-Dev-Meera interaction. Yesterday, in my analysis, I hoped you would show the NT-Dev-Meera interaction uncover Dev's character for the spineless coward that he is and you delivered...and how! Let's start with the difference in acting...Perneet's expression registers shock upon seeing NT...but Abhinav's face...zippo! I loved that you had NT steal Geet's line from yesterday, the one about relationships, to repeat to Dev. She even acknowledged she got it from Geet...nice touch! It was also great to see how the screenplay had NT waste no time in putting Meera in her place and reclaim her spot as "the wife". Lastly, I loved how NT cunningly played on Dev's weak points/fears to show his character as the puppet to her strings...like it has always been.
Doston Mere Doston...Dosti Ke Geet Main Gaata Hoon:Lets start here with the Adi-Pinky conversation with Pinky's dad. Revealing the truth about Geet's pregnancy suddenly to Adi & Pinky is a good track to start only if...yes, there is an if...only if you intend to show Pinky's, Adi's & Geet's friendship grow and become stronger. If so, this would address one of my pet peeves from before. Previously, you have shown that Geet thinks Pinky & Adi are her only friends and Adi even stands up to Maan when Geet runs away. But all this was shown without establishing a strong foundation for their so-called friendship...a couple of jokes do not a friendship make. As Adi & Pinky start connecting the dots, this track could be a wonderful focus on friendship that stands the tests of time...I can think of some nice stories that could be started now but also looped back in nicely when GC returns. I did also notice that one of the lines you gave Pinky's dad was "Ek beimaan shaksh ke wajah se Geet aur uske parivaar kho bahu badaa dhokha khana pada"...huh...why reference Geet's family today? Are you trying to start laying the groundwork for the future entry of Geet's family and their redemption?
Moving on...the other blossoming friendship today was that Geet & Meera. That Meera would run in to Geet was a given. It had to happen to take their story forward...but having Geet say "Aaj choclate bhi koi madat nahi kar sakti" just before Meera sees her was completely and unnecessarily over the top. Come on writers, you cannot explain away such dialogues on exigent circumstances...just self-indulgent writing at its worst! I am not going to quibble on how they conveniently met at the same park they did the last time. So Meera's takes a walk in the park next the Khurana compound and runs in to Geet but Maan starts driving and goes to the jungle to wonder where Geet is...I will let this one slide based on you having limited resources to work with this week.
Other than that, the rest of the dialogues between Geet & Meera were great. Two women bonding on the pain each feels was shown beautifully! Speaking from personal experience, pain does make poets out of us all.
Closing notes:1. Please work on Abhinav's emoting. He was mildly ok when he tried to portray anger at Naintara but other than that there was absolutely no reaction or emotion at all.
2. You gave us several hints & future story leads today:
- Maan recalling that Geet was upset before she vanished - Maan's character will connect the dots the moment he returns.
- Dadima's Sameera reference and NT's expressions when Dadima said this - Sameera will enter to provide Geet with some new perspective on Maan
- NT thinking that only Geet & her know the true "ateet" and if it were to come out, both Dev & her would be in trouble - Maan will publicly state Geet's child is his thus giving NT a good sword to hold over their heads
- Adi & Pinky learning the truth and Pinky's father referencing Geet's family - Will they connect the dots and realize that Geet's tormentor was Dev? Will Maan realize the truth himself or hear it from Adi/Pinky or Geet? Will Geet's family enter the story again after seeing the media coverage of the engagement? Think Peepli Live...media could land in HSP to dig out the truth of Geet's past.
3. Even in the midst of this unplanned story, you managed to leave the episode with a cliffhanger on whether Meera will reveal who she is. My guess is she will not...Geet's character will not let her accept Meera's help if she knows of her link to Dev.
All in all...good work!
PS: For those who have asked, the "bold" sub-titles are either directly from movie songs or are takes on them. Yep...I love music!
