Part 2:
As Geet was watching Maan set up the tent, her stomach started to growl, she was in such a hurry to catch the earliest bus to HP that she didn't even have a chance to eat dinner. She touched her stomach, wondering how she would go about getting food at this hour.
Her uneasiness didn't go unnoticed by Maan who was done setting up the tent now. He looked at her worried expression.
Maan: Kya baath hai Geet? Tum theek toh ho?
Geet: Haan woh woh…
Maan: Geet agar koi problem hai toh tum mujhay bata sakthi ho, itna haq toh hai tumhara.
Geet smiled at his caring nature: thinking to herself: Kitnay achay hai na yeh, hamesha mera khayal rakthay hain…
Geet: Woh woh mujhay bhook lagi hai?
Maan slapped his forehead
Maan: Geeeet, tumhay kitni bhook lagthi hai? Kabhi time se khana nahi kathi kya, hamesha kabhi idhar bhag rahi hoti ho toh kabhi udhar, kabhi apna khud ka bhi khayal rakh liya karo.
Geet: Acha acha ab apko mujhay zyada batein sunanay ki koi zaroorat nahi, ek toh main aap ki wajah se yahan ayi hoon, aur aap hai ke mujhay hi daandth rahay hai,
Maan softens his tone: Geet mein tumhay daandth nahi raha hoon samjha raha hoon.
Geet: Haan main sab samaj thi hoon main, lekin abhi …abhi toh bas mujhay khana chahiyay, Aur who bhi paani puri.
Maan: Paani puri?
Geet with her mouth watering: Haan paani puri, main aur Rajji na, hamesha saath paani puri khatay thay, her eyes begin to tear remembering Rajji. Maan notices and tries to change the topic.
Maan: Ab main tumharay liye paani puri kahan se laon is waqt?
Geet: Jab hum yahah arahay thay toh rastay mein mainey ek paani puri wala dekha tha, itni dur nahi hai bus 5 minute ki doori pe hoga.
Maan: Acha toh tum yahan tent mein behto, mein lekar ata hoon.
Maan is getting up to leave but Geet grabs his hand.
Geet: Aap mujhay yun akela chod ke chale jayegay.
Maan: Aray panch minute mein hi to araha hoon.
Geet: Suniye….Maan glares at her, mera matlab Maan, Maan mujhay dar lagay ka.
Maan: Acha toh theek hain, aisa karo ke mujhsay chipak kar behet jao, aur jahan jahan mein jaun mere saath saath chalthi jana takay sab tumhay dekh le aur sabko pata chal jein tum wapis Hoshiyapur agayi ho. He says sarcastically
Geet: Ab daar lag raha hai toh koi kya kar saktha hai, mujhay nahi pata, main apkay saath chalungi, main apna mooh dakh lungi, she takes her duppaata putting it over her head, aisa theek hai, hain na?
Maan: thinking that no one can win over this girl, Acha theek hai chalo.
They both go towards the paani puri stand with Geet following close behind Maan. They reach the stand.
Maan: Bhaiya ek paani puri ki plate dena.
Paani puri wala (PPW): Bas ek hi sab, apko apni lugai (wife) ke liye nahi leni, he says looking towards Geet who has her dupatta covering her face.
Maan: Lugai?
PPW: waisay lagtha hai apki nayi nayi shaadi hui hai, jab hi yeh yun ghoongath dala hui hain.
Maan: Dekhiya mujhay kuch samaj nahi arah aap kya kehra hain..
Geet laughs from under her dupatta.
Maan: Yeh main in hi key liya leraha hoon, ap chaldi banayi yeh please.
PPW: Lagtha hai bohut pyaar karthay ho apni lugai say, bohut khayal hai uska. jeetay raho, bhagwan tum dono ko khush rakhay, he says handing over the plate.
Maan takes the plate and they head back to the tent. They are sitting in the tent and Geet is eating the paani puri.
Maan is watching her. He is looking really tired.
Geet: Maan aap bhi kha lijay na, mujhay pata hai apna bhi kuch nahi khaya hoga. She
says offering her plate forward
Maan: Nahi, mujhay nahi khana, aur waisay bhi kisi na mujhay kaha hai ke gheron ka jhoota nahi kathay.
Geet remembers herself telling that to him.
Geet: Lekin lekin ab toh mein ap ki apni hoon na, apki mangetar?
They both look into each other's eyes and get lost in the moment.
Maan snaps out of it: Acha haan mangetar toh tum ho, acha theek hain kha leta hoon, he looks at his hands which are dirty from setting up the tent.
Geet takes a paani puri in her hand and offers it to him. He takes a bite and some of the water drips down from his lips and is going down his neckline, when Geet takes her dupatta forward and wipes it off.
She is about to pull her dupatta back and Maan holds her hand back pulling her dupatta.
Maan: Geet aisa nahi hosakthaka tum hamesha yun hi mere paas raho, humesah mere saath,
Geet: Aap kya kehna cha rahay hai meri kcuh samaj nahi araha. Lagtha hai apko neend arahi hai.
Maan: Tum kyun mera itna khayal rakthi ho, kyun mere baray mein itna socthi ho.
He says pulling her even closer to himself.
Geet looks right into his eyes, and then blinks slowly.
Geet: Kyunki kyunki….kyunki main aap ki mangetar hoon aur yeh meri naukri ka hisa hai. Ab chaliyay sojayiyay, she says moving away, leaving an angry Maan.
Maan knew that there definitely was some reason why Geet wasn't giving into her feelings and he definitely was going to get to the bottom of it, for now he thought it best to let things go with the flow between them and enjoy this time that he had gotten alone with her.
Maan took out his sleeping bag and set it up on one end of the tent and Geet sat with her arms folded around her knees on another end.
Maan: Geet kya hua tumhein neend nahi arahi.
Geet feeling uneasy that the two of them had to stay together in the little tent.
Maan understanding the reason for her uneasiness: Geet agar tum tent mein suna chahthi ho to theek hai main bahar so jaon ga. He said getting out of the tent.
He stepped out and Geet peeked between the opening in the tent. There he stood opening the buttons of his shirt, about to take it off due to the humid weather,
Geet to herself: Hai Babaji, Ek toh inhay chayen nahi hai, jab dekho kapray utarnay lag jatay hai..ab kya karoon.
Geet gets out of the tent.
Geet: Suniye
Maan turns around still in the middle of opening his buttons.
Maan: Hmmm?
Geet: Woh who looking at his shirt and the open buttons and trying to not let her thoughts wander to the night she had seen him do his Tai Chi….woh mein keh rahi thi ke ke aap aap apnay kapray mat utariyay.
Maan: Hain?
Geet: Mera matlab hai kuch toh sharam kijiyay. Yeh apka Delhi nahi hai, Hoshiyarpur hai… yahan aap aisay sohengay toh subah subah saari ladkiyan apke upar khadi wi hongi aur apko dekhar kar hehe hehe karthay huay sharma rahi hongi.
Maan: smiling at Geet's jealousy Haan toh acha hai na isi bahanay mein Hoshiyarpur ki ladkiyon ko bhi dekhlo ga, waisay bhi mainay suna hai ke Hoshiyarpur ki ladkiyan bohut khoobsurat hoti hai, he says stepping forward and moving away a strand of hair that had come across Geet's face from the wind.
Geet gets shy: Jee? And then she realizes how he is talking about looking at other girls.
Geet: Dekhiyay Dekhiyay..she says moving a bit away from him.
Maan in his soft voice: Dekh hi toh raha hoon.
Geet: looking away from his piercing gaze..Mera matlab hain ke dekhiyay yahan ki sari ladkiyan seedhi saadhi nahi hoti, agar agar apko kisi ne apna jaal mein phassa liya toh, hai rabba agar kisi ne apko yun akela bahar dekh kar kaala jaado kar diya toh, hai phir mera kya hoga, she says worriedly.
Maan: Kya, kaala jadoo?
Geet in her own world: Nahi Nahin, main apko bahar nahi sohna dungi, she pulls his hand and brings him towards the tent, Aap andar hi sojayein mujhey koi problem nahi.
Maan smiles mischieviously and agrees.
It was really dark in the tent so Geet took out her candle from her bag and lit it with her matches. Maan watched how her beautiful face seemed to glow even more in the candlelight. He was mesmerized by her beauty and wouldn't take his eyes of her.
Geet: Aap Sohengay nahi kya?
Man: Haan haan bus soraha hoon.
He goes inside and lays his sleeping bag down and then proceeds to sleep over it.
Geet on the other end it in the corner sleeping on the hard dirt floor. She is twisting and turning, not feeling comfortable at all.
Maan as always was notices her discomfort.
Maan: Looking her way, Geet kya baath hai?
Geet: Maan woh woh meri kamar mein dard horaha hai, is zameen pe soya nahi ja raha.
Maan feeling bad for her.
Maan: Geet ek kaam karo, tum yeh rakhlo, he hands over his sleeping bag, main zameen pe sojaunga.
Geet: Par Maan apko toh bilkul aadat nahi hogi yun zameen pe sonagi.
Maan: Kabhi kabhi kisi apnay ke liye itni kurbaani toh de hi sakthay hai na? Chalo yeh lo.
Geet: Lekin lekin mujhey bilkul acha nahi lag raha, meri wajah se aap yun.
Maan: Geeet, mainay kaha na le lo.
She takes it and and then lays down feeling a lot more comfortable. She wakes up after a little while to notice Maan twisting and turning, but it wasn't because of the discomfort of sleeping on the hard dirt floor, but rather he was being bit by mosquitoes.
Geet: Hai kambakhat khoon chusay walay, ek tukjhay yeh hi milay thay kaat ne kay liye, hai bicharay kitnay lal hogayay hain.
Maan was wearing a short sleeved shirt and hadn't taken it off after Geet had made a big fuss about him taking his shirt off all the time, he knew what impact he had on her and decided to ease her tension by keeping his shirt on. However the mosquitoes had bit him all along one arm and now he was itching his other.
Geet: Aye hai, becahray… She thinks about what she can do.
She looks at her dupatta and decided to cover him with it like a sheet, anyway he was sleeping and it wasn't as if she really needed her dupatta at the moment. It could come in better use for Maan.
She moved closer to him and covered him lovingly with her dupatta. He was looking so cute sleeping, as if he had no worries in the world. Getting lost in the moment she caressed his face lightly. Then after a few seconds the content smile on Maan's face began to change into a look of dread and worry.
Geet noticed drops of sweat forming on his forehead and could hear his heart beat faster, almost as if it would pop out of his chest.
He woke up breathing hard.
Maan: Nahiiii!!! He screamed.
Geet: touching his back. Kya hua Maan, aap aap theek toh hai?
Maan: Geet, he held her hand, tum yahin ho?
Geet: Haan main toh yehi hoon. Apko kya hua?
Maan: Bas ek bura sapna dekha.
Geet: Kaisa sapna.
Maan: Ke koi apna, mujhsay bohut dur jaraha hai.
Geet frowned.
Maan: looked into Geet's eyes and held her hand tighter. Geet tum to kabhi mujhay chor kar dur nahi jaogi na?
Geet: tears forming in her eyes at his question, even though deep down in her heart she knew the answer was yes, but she just couldn't see his despair at the moment so she said…..Nahi, kabhi nahi..
Maan smiled just like a little child who had been given his favorite toy and he hugged Geet.
Geet was hesitant and first but then she hugged him back and then Maan fell back asleep shifting his head to Geet's lap.
Geet had never seen this vulnerable side of Maan, and now it worried her even more how Maan would react to her truth, cause she knew that although she wished to be with him like this forever, arm in arm, hand in hand, one day their paths were bound to separate. She sighed, but then decided why think so much about the future, maybe she should just be happy in the moment, and she smiled looking down and Maan's face and stroked his hair gently with her fingers.
