Part 19
Geet became quiet after hearing the news that Dev and Naintara were out of jail. A feeling of dread came over her. She hoped that everything would be sorted out and she didn't have to deal with Dev and Naintara. Maan was watching Geet's reaction. She twisted her arm around his, as if he would disappear if she didn't. He could clearly tell from the look on her face that she was worried. He tried to console her.
"Geet, Don't worry. The lawyer will take care of the issue.", Maan said. She nodded.
Maan put his arm around her shoulder protectively and said, "I won't let anything happen to you. They won't be able to come near you. Just relax and concentrate on taking care of yourself and the baby."
Geet gave him a weak smile. She didn't doubt that he would always shield her from any harm. She was just afraid of what Dev and Naintara were capable of. At the moment she felt a little calmer with Maan's arm around her. She put her head down on his shoulder in relief. He was surprised at this but had a slight smile on his face. Looks like she didn't completely want to stay away from him.
A little while later, the driver stopped the car in front of Khurana Constructions. Geet was eager to be back. She walked side by side with Maan in to the building. As they entered the whole staff looked up to see the new Mrs. Maan Singh Khurana. At first no one recognized her. She wore a pale blue saree. Her curly hair fell down to the middle of her back. She wore light jewelry. Geet felt very intimidated when every eye was on her.
First they went in to Maan's cabin. He called Pinky to get the entire staff in the hall to make an announcement. Geet wanted to know what her new job would be. Maan didn't tell her yet, because he wanted to surprise her.
"Maan, tell me what my job is already.", she said with anticipation.
"Not yet. Just wait a little. Come, lets go out to the hall."
The staff of Khurana Constructions was waiting for their boss to make his announcement. They were curious as to what it was. They were sure it had something to do with Geet. They all wondered how The Maan Singh Khurana ended up marrying Geet.
Maan stood in front of his staff with his hands in his pocket. Geet timidly stood next to him.
"I don't think I have to introduce Geet to you all, as you know her already. But from today, Geet will be your boss as well I. She is the new head of the Creative Design Department From now on, you will refer to her as ma'am and give her the same level of respect you give me. I hope that is clear to you all", He said sternly, looking at Sasha when saying the last part. "All of you can get back to your seats now.", he finished.
Adi and Pinky gave Geet a smile before getting back to work. Maan went back to his office with Geet.
Maan looked at Geet and said, "So do you think you could handle being head of the creative design department?"
"Of course I can!", Geet assured him.
"Good. You basically have to review all the designs and give your input on how to improve it."
"That's all?...But that's not even that much work.", Geet said with a frown.
"I know. After you gain more experience, you can begin working with me and do your own projects. This is only temporary.", Maan explained. "For now you'll mostly work with me, so you can learn what to do. Is that okay?"
Geet brightened at the idea. "Yeah. So what do I do first?"
"We need to hire new secretaries for you and me. I already had Tasha find some candidates. We're going to interview them."
"oh…Okay." Geet didn't really like the idea of Maan having a new secretary.
They sat in Maan's cabin for an hour interviewing many candidates. They had already picked a girl as Geet's secretary. Her name was Suhana. But they had not found Maan a secretary yet. Geet objected to every girl that came in. She kept finding random problems they had even though Maan thought they were good. He was beginning to get annoyed.
"Geet! All the candidates so far were good. Why didn't you like any of them?", Maan asked frustrated.
"No they weren't. They didn't have any experience"
"The last time I checked you didn't have any experience either, when you began working as my secretary."
"That was different."
"No it wasn't. Now can you stop making a fuss! I'm going to choose my own secretary."
"Why are you so eager to have a new secretary? Did all the girls that came in here with their short little skirts impress you that easily?", Geet said without thinking.
Now Maan understood the problem. So Geet didn't want Maan to work with another girl. She was jealous. He gave her a smug smile.
"Geet, are you jealous?"
"What?! That's absurd."
"mm hm… so you don't mind if I just hire one of these girls?"
"No…hire who ever you want.", Geet said not looking him in the eye.
Maan laughed out loud. He never thought Geet would get jealous. This was surprising. She glared at him.
"What's so funny?", she asked.
"Nothing. Lets just call the next candidate.", Maan said trying to stifle his laughter.
"hmph…Dusht Danav", Geet said rolling her eyes.
When the next candidate walked in Geet knew right away that she was the one. They interviewed her and Geet approved. The reason for the approval was that she was dressed in a salwar kameez and was in her 30's. The bigger factor was that she wore a mangalsutra and sindoor on her forehead. Maan didn't neglect to see this. After she left, he began to laugh again.
"Why do you keep laughing?!", Geet asked clearly annoyed.
"I told you, it's nothing. Am I not allowed to laugh?"
"I didn't know you could laugh.", Geet retorted.
"Well, I can. Now do you want to see your office? You still have the same office as last time, except with a few changes", Maan said, trying change the topic so she wouldn't get upset.
"But what about your new secretary?"
"She'll get the office across the hall.", Maan said going to the door. He wanted Geet to have the office next to his. This way she would always be in his sight.
Geet followed Maan to her cabin. He opened the door for her and they entered. Geet looked around and couldn't recognize the room. It was the same cabin she had before but everything was different. There was all new furniture. It looked a lot like Maan's cabin. It had a TV, bigger cabinets, and a new couch. There was light dcor here and there.
"Do you like it?", Maan asked.
"Yes, I do. But you didn't have to do all this. I was fine with my old things."
"I just wanted you to have better things. Go sit at you new desk."
Geet sat in her chair. She smiled, "Maan, thanks for agreeing to let me work. Its really important for me. I want to do things on my own. I'm just sick of relying on others."
"I know. You don't have to thank me. I just want you to be happy. You are happy right?", he asked in trepidation.
"Yes Maan. I am.", She said giving him a smile.
He was relieved to hear her say that. For the rest of the day they went on doing their work. Maan checked on Geet every now and then. She told him to relax and that if she needed help she would ask. He also called his lawyer a few times to get the status on Dev and Naintara. So far the lawyer was not able to do anything. He was becoming angry, but he hid his anger from Geet.
Many of the staff members congratulated Geet on her marriage. She coyly thanked them. They all referred to her as ma'am, as Maan had told them. She felt strange when they did. When she saw Sasha, she gave her a nasty look. Pinky and Adi came by to chat and they were happy to have Geet back to the office. Geet didn't do a lot of work since it was her first day back and she had a new position.
When they arrived home Dadima asked all about her day. Geet excitedly told her everything. Later, in their room, Maan informed Geet that she had a doctors appointment the next week, so they would have to miss a few hours at work that day.
"You don't have to come with me. I can go by myself. You shouldn't miss work.", Geet said.
"No, I'm going with you and that's final. I want to know what the doctor says.", Maan said firmly.
The next week they were in the doctors office. Maan stepped out to let the doctor check Geet. Geet was 22 weeks along now. Her stomach was a little bigger. They wanted to know the gender of the baby, but the doctor couldn't tell because of its position. The doctor told them everything was fine with the fetus. Maan asked plenty of questions on what to do and what not to do during pregnancy. He always made sure that Geet ate well, took her prenatal vitamins and got enough rest. Sometimes she would get annoyed at his over protectiveness.
A few days later, Geet woke up very early in the morning. She had a very restless night. Maan was still asleep next to her. She could not sleep, instead she watched Maan sleeping peacefully. She admired his handsome face. Then without hesitation, she gave him a light kiss on the lips. His lips were soft and luscious. She quickly pulled back before he woke up. He stirred a little to her touch. She remembered their last kiss. When Maan kissed her, it gave a shock through out her body. She lost all sense of herself. She honestly didn't know how much longer she could control herself. Day by day she was more in love with him. Though she never let it on, she thought of him all the time. Maan was the only person she had as her own except her baby. He meant the world to her.
People at work wondered about Geet's pregnancy. Now it was visible that she was having a baby. How could that be possible? Maan and Geet were only married for three weeks. Unless… they were together from before. They all thought about it, but no one dared to question anyone regarding her pregnancy.
Geet was learning fast about the work her new position required. Maan helped her a lot. Geet's new secretary, Suhana was very quiet. She mostly just did what she was told. Nevertheless, she was efficient. Geet loved working. She spent most of the day with Maan. She liked working with him, though they still argued. She liked Maan's new secretary too. Her name was Radha. Geet found her very amusing to talk to. She was very funny, but when Maan was near she usually stayed silent.
Maan was the same as he was before. He still got angry easily and he maintained his stone cold exterior. The single person who saw a different side of Maan, was Geet. He only softened at her presence. She alone was able to see into Maan Singh Khurana's soul and she was glad of it. She liked the fact that she was the only one who knew the real Maan. It was proof that he belonged to her. She didn't want to share him with the rest of the world.
Geet's stomach was growing bigger. She felt very conscious about it. She could feel the peculiar looks at work, form the staff. She wasn't surprised at the way they acted. Maan and her were only married for a month. It was predictable that they would question her pregnancy. When she told Maan about it, he told her to ignore it and that there was no way she could stop people from thinking what they did. Of course he were right. People thought that Maan must have married her because she was pregnant with his baby. Maan said it was his baby, so it didn't matter that they thought that. She wished that she was able to have the same attitude as he did.
One evening, Maan walked in to their room to find Geet checking the size of her stomach in the mirror. He immediately turned around to leave the room. But Geet saw him and called him back.
"Maan, do you think I'm getting fatter?", She asked.
"What? That's ridiculous. No, of course not. You look beautiful as always.", Maan said faking a look of surprise. He acted as if it was absurd that she would even ask that. He was wishing he hadn't come to the room at this point.
"You really think so? I think I'm fat now.", Geet told him moving her body side to side to look at herself in the mirror.
"Yes I do. I think I forgot my cell phone down stairs. I'll be back in a bit.", Maan lied.
He was so relieved to be out of the room. This wasn't the first time Geet asked him if he thought she was fat. She had asked him before. The first time she asked, he stupidly said that her stomach was bigger. She began to cry. She kept saying he thought she was fat. It took him half an hour to calm her down. He didn't want to go through that again. He didn't understand why she got upset. Wasn't it normal for her stomach to grow? From then on he told her what she wanted hear. Women were so weird, he thought.
Maan went downstairs and called the lawyer. Mr. Patel couldn't do anything about putting Naintara and Dev back in jail. They would have to wait till the court date. Maan constantly worried about it. He knew Naintara well. She was one to hold grudges. He wanted Dev and Naintara as far from Geet as possible.
