Part 12
Dev and Geet stared at each other in horror. He mistakenly called out her name. Geet whispered, "Dev."
Maan looked from Dev to Geet and felt something amiss. He asked, "Do you two know each other already?"
Geet walked up to Dev, and with all the force that she had in her body slapped him. His hand flew up to his burning cheek. Maan started at Geet in shock.
"Geet! Why did you just hit my brother?", Maan questioned in confusion and anger.
"Your brother?", Geet asked with wide eyes.
"Yes! What's gotten into you?", Maan yelled.
"He's your brother?", Geet repeated.
"Yes, he's my brother", he said standing next to Dev now.
"How can this be? How can Dev be your brother?", She spoke more to herself than Maan this time.
"Geet! Why did you hit Dev?", Maan asked again with frustration.
"He can't be your brother. Him, the man that destroyed my life and you, the man that saved my life, can't be brothers.", Geet said with angry tears dripping from her eyes.
"What are you talking about?... Dev destroyed your life?", The situation was confusing him more and more. He turned to Dev and said, "Dev what is she talking about?"
"I…I don't know.", Dev said backing up from his brother.
"Someone better explain what's going on here right this instant.", Maan declared.
"Why? Don't you know that your brother is the one who married me and left me pregnant with his child?", Geet said in fury.
Geet was pregnant?, Dev thought. What had he gotten himself into? He should have never agreed to marry her. But that Naintara always made him do what she wanted. He knew this wouldn't end well.
"What?!!", Maan bellowed. "Dev, is it true?", he asked.
"Bro…I…I don't know what she's talking about", Dev stuttered.
"You're a lair", She told Dev and turned to Maan and said. "Stop pretending like you didn't know about any of this! Your his brother for gods sake. Now I see everything clearly. You practically forced me to give you my land back in Hoshiarpur after he left me. Was that the plan? Since Dev couldn't get my signature on the property papers you pretended to buy my land instead?"
Maan looked at Geet in pain. How could she think that he was a part of any of this. He loved her. He would never hurt her. In fact he would never betray anyone like that. "Geet, how can you think that? I had nothing to do with any of this. I didn't know Dev was the man that betrayed you. If I did, I would have brought him to your feet a long time ago."
"Don't lie to me! I want to know why both of you ruined my life? I want to know how you could be so cruel?, Geet said in anguish.
Maan took a step toward Geet, while Dev stood his ground as if he was frozen. "Geet believe me, I would never do that to you. Think about it if I really did have something to do with this I wouldn't have let Dev work here. I would try to hide it"
"I don't know what you people are up to but I plan on getting justice!", Geet replied ignoring Maan.
"Fine! you can do what ever you want but you have to hear me out!", Maan said. He grabbed her hand and dragged her towards the door. "Dev come with me." Dev followed, not sure what to do.
Maan brought her to the parking lot and to his car. "Get in the car!", he yelled at Dev. Dev did as he was told. But getting Geet in the car was a problem. She wouldn't budge. He finally forced her to sit in the car and locked the doors so she couldn't get out. He drove as fast as he could to Khurana mansion.
Maan stormed into the house, "Naintara!!", He roared.
Dadima came down the stairs followed by Naintara. "What happened? Why are you yelling like that Maan?", Dadima asked.
Naintara already knew as she saw Geet standing behind Maan. What was Geet doing here? Did Maan know what they did in Hoshiarpur? She couldn't rely on Dev to handle the situation. She had to take control. What if Maan kicked them out of the house again?
"Why don't you ask Dev and Naintara", Maan answered his grandmother.
"Maan veerji, What happened?", Naintatra asked innocently.
"Shut up!", Maan shouted. "Geet come here", he ordered.
Geet walked to his side , The tears still fell down her face. These tears were filled with pain, anger, and sadness.
"Do you recognize her Naintara?", Maan asked tightening his jaw. He looked like he could kill her at that moment.
Naintara glanced at Dev. He had fear in his eyes. She knew he would end up blowing their spot. "No, veerji. I don't recall ever meeting her.", she answered coolly.
Geet could not believe her ears. That was enough! She wasn't going to let her lie. She stepped in front of Naintara and slapped her twice. Naintara looked at Geet ferociously. "How dare you hit me?", she said lifting her own hand to hit Geet back.
Maan grabbed her hand in mid air and said, "Don't even think about it!"
Dadima stood there flustered at what was happening in front of her eyes. "Maan! What is going on here?"
"I guess since they won't admit what they did I'll have to tell you. Dev is the guy that married Geet and left her. He paid off his gambling debt by selling the property he stole form her. And I ended up buying that property."
"That can't be true. How could my grandson ever do such a thing?", Savitri Devi said in shock.
"It's true Dadima. We never bothered to ask them where they got the money to pay back the debt. Now it all make sense.", Maan said.
"Dev! Explain all this!", his grandmother shouted.
"Dadima…", Dev began but was interrupted by Naintara.
"Dadima don't believe a word of this. That girl is lying, probably to try and steal our money.", Naintara said deviously.
"If you say one word against Geet, you'll regret it.", Maan said with a furious glare.
"Bro please believe us…We didn't do anything. We don't even know who this girl is.", Dev stammered.
Maan turned around to look at Dev and punched him with a strong fist. The corner of Dev's mouth began to bleed. "Is that why you recognized Geet when she walked into my cabin?", Maan asked gritting his teeth.
Geet stood there observing all this without saying a word. Did Maan really have nothing to do with this? Was he really unaware of what Dev and Naintara did? She wanted to believe it. But it all seemed so connected. Dev marrying her for her property and then Maan showing up right after, to get her signature on the property papers. Maan was her savior. He was the man that claimed to love her, the man that wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, he couldn't have done any of this. She didn't know what to do.
"Maan! I want you to explain to me how you ended up buying the same property that your brother stole from me.", Geet said glaring at him.
Maan looked at Geet and could tell she still didn't believe that he wasn't a part of Dev and Naintara's scheme. "Geet I bought the property from a Real estate agent. The property was in your name and the agent told me your were the one that sold it. I swear to you that I have nothing to do with any of this, please believe me. I would never do something like what they did.", Maan said relaxing his temper a bit.
"Okay, so you won't mind if I call the police now.", Geet said with confidence.
"Go ahead.", Maan replied.
Naintara and Dev began to panic. "Bro please don't do this…I'm sorry Geet, please forgive me for what I did to you. You can punish me any way you like, but don't call the police."
Dadima could not believe what she was hearing. Dev really was the one that had betrayed Geet. Dev tried to plead with Dadima too, but she ignored him.
Naintara glared at Geet. She was not going to let Geet get away with this. "Who the hell do you think you are? You can't call the police on me!", she roared.
"Watch me!", Geet said taking the cell phone Maan handed to her.
Naintara lunged at Geet to try and grab the phone from her. Maan stood in her path to shield Geet. Naintara fumed with rage. "You have no idea what your getting yourself into. I'm not someone you want as your enemy Maan!", She said dangerously.
"Are you threatening me? Because I'm not afraid of you.", Maan said with menace in his voice
Geet called the police. They said they would arrive shortly. Dev grabbed Geet's hand and begged her to forgive him. Maan became enraged at the fact that Dev touched her. He pulled Dev away from her and struck him again.
"Stay away from her.", Maan said in disgust.
Dev said, "Geet please…", Geet looked away from him.
The police arrived at Khurana mansion. They wrote down a report and arrested both Naintara and Dev. Maan and Dadima agreed to be witnesses in the case. Dev still pleaded with Geet and Maan. He asked Dadima to try to make Maan understand. "Dev what you did is unforgivable and I am ashamed to call you my grandson. You are no longer a part of this family.", Savitri Devi told Dev with revulsion.
When the police finally left with Dev and Naintara in tow, Geet felt as if it wasn't real. Her eyes were blood shot from crying. She stood there for a moment, and then she realized that she had finally punished Dev. Dadima came to her and put a consoling hand on her shoulder.
"I'm so sorry beta, for everything Dev has done to you. Maan told me everything already and I wish I could fix it. Why don't you sit down.", Dadima said ushering Geet to sit n the sofa.
Geet sat down. Someone had handed her a glass of water but she was in too much distress to realize who it was. She took the water and drank it. Dadima sat next to her. "I hope you still don't think Maan had anything to do with this. Actually none of us knew what he was up to. You see a few months back Dev had gotten into a lot of debt because of his gambling problems. When Maan found out, he threw him out of the house. I guess that's when he went to Hoshiarpur.", Geet listened quietly.
Maan walked to Geet, "Geet", he said softly.
His voice sent a jolt through her body. She looked up at him. Then all of a sudden she got up. "I have to go.", She announced.
"Geet, please talk to me.", Maan asserted.
"No, I don't want anything to do with you anymore. Please just stay away from me and my life.", She said without looking at him. Then she walked out, leaving a shattered Maan behind. Savitri Devi looked at her grandson in alarm as she saw him shed tears for the first time since he was a child.
Geet finally arrived home. She wanted to get away from that place. The tears in her eyes kept pouring. She was happy and relieved, but she could not stop crying. She knew it was because of Maan. She threw him out of her life because she didn't want anything connected to Dev in her. It was for the best. So why did she feel so horrible about it? Of all the things that happened today, why was it that the only thing that really made her anxious was that Maan was no longer a part of her life. It was probably because he was the only person that helped her, or the only person that she felt understood her.
Pinky stayed with Geet all night. When Geet told Pinky and her dad what happened they told her she did the right thing by calling the police. When Pinky's dad finally went to bed, Geet told Pinky about the things that happened between her and Maan including the kiss.
"Geet I think DD really loves you. You should give him a chance.", Pinky said sweetly after hearing the whole story.
"No, I can't have him in my life. I don't think I fully trust him. He's too tied to the things with Dev"
"But, I've been working at Khurana Construction for almost two years now and Maan sir may be angry and uptight but he's a good person. He's never been unjust to anyone at work.", Pinky tried to convince her.
Geet knew Pinky was right. "Still pinky…", Pinky stopped her.
"Geet I think your only trying to avoid him because your afraid that he'll hurt you after what Dev did to you.", She said boldly.
"Your wrong. I just want to live my life in peace that's all.", Geet countered.
Savitri Devi attempted to console her favorite grandson as he shed tears over Geet. She had to admit it frightened her a bit to see Maan in this state. Of all her grandchildren he was the most well composed. His emotions were always bottled up inside. He had never reacted like this over anything. It worried her.
Maan was extremely troubled after Geet's departure. He felt as if someone had ripped off a part of himself, when she told him she didn't want anything to do with him. He couldn't stand to stay away from her.
"Maan, beta don't worry everything will be fine."
"No Dadima, you should have seen the look on her face. She's gone for good."
"Don't be ridiculous, you can get her back."
"Yes but how? She has no idea what she means to me. Doesn't she get it?", Maan said with a look of distress.
"You have to understand what she has gone through. I'm surprised that she was able to handle things as well as she did. You need to give her time to sort out her feelings.
"Maybe your right.", He said. Then he went to the out house and began his usual martial arts routine to alleviate his anxiety.
Two days passed since Geet had met Dev. She stayed home and once again browsed the newspaper for jobs. She still felt restless. She didn't usually have a lot of morning sickness but the past two days it was really bad. She was about 4 months and two week pregnant. The bump on her stomach was a tiny bit bigger but not visible enough. She decided to go to the doctor and get a checkup. The doctor told her not to stress. But she couldn't stop worrying. She didn't have a job and she was having a baby. What was she going to do? Then there was Maan on the forefront of her mind. She kept thinking of him. The kiss they had kept replaying inside her head. "Babaji, mere madat karna.", She thought.
On Thursday evening, Geet and Pinky sat chatting, while Pinky's dad watched TV. Then, suddenly the door bell rang. Geet got up to open the door. She couldn't believe who she saw standing before her. Maan and his grandmother stood in the doorway.
"Aren't you going to ask us to come in?", Maan asked.
Pinky came up behind Geet and said "Sir, please come in.", Pinky pulled Geet's out of the doorway to let Maan and Savitri Devi inside.
Pinky's dad got off the sofa and asked them to sit down. Maan and Savitri took seats besides each other.
"So, I believe you are Geet's guardian?", Savitri Devi asked Pinky's father.
"Yes, you can say that.", he replied.
"Then it would be okay to ask you for Geet's hand in marriage for my grandson.", She with an air of poise.
Geet's mouth opened in surprise and her eyes enlarged. She looked at Maan with fury, while he had a smug look on his face.
