By Taran Adarsh, June 29, 2007 - 12:31 IST

Television producer. Music composer. Singer. And now actor. Oh yes, Himesh Reshammiya wears many caps. Literally! Everyone's curious to know how HR is as an actor? Is he a fine actor? Or has he strolled into the wrong alley?

Don't expect miracles. HR is no Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, SRK or Aamir Khan when it comes to histrionics. He's not the best looker in town either, not anywhere close to Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan or Akshay Kumar.

But you've to hand it over to HR for being the most courageous and confident person around. Can you ever imagine actors like Amitabh Bachchan or SRK turning music composers overnight? It's difficult to take risks, especially when you're under a scanner constantly. Like the famous lines go, every step you take, every move you make, the world'll be watching you…

Write your own movie review of Aap Ka Surroor - The Moviee
Let's get one more thing straight. AAP KAA SURROOR is no amar prem kahani. The love story is the type we've watched a zillion times on the screen before. But what saves the ship from sinking is the fact that the turn of events unfold at a feverish pace and before you realize you've been there, seen that, you're already watching the next link to this story.

So what's the verdict on AAP KAA SURROOR? It's crystal clear. The curiosity to watch HR 'act' will ensure his fans and foes making a beeline for movieplexes at least once. HR is sure to have his share of bouquets and brickbats. Bouquets, because the musical score of AAP KAA SURROOR is tremendous. Besides, he has handled a few emotional moments without trying to ape any actor. He's natural. Brickbats, because the film rests on a thin plot. Plus, the writing gets so filmy that you know exactly what the film is all about, at the start itself.

All said, watch it for Himesh Reshammiya take a giant leap. At least he has the guts to chase his dreams!

AAP KAA SURROOR begins with a dead body of a TV journo, Nadia Merchant, being found in a remote area, somewhere in Germany. Soon after, HR is arrested after a concert for murdering the television journalist. HR is put behind bars and the incidents begin to unravel as the movie goes into a flashback.

While on a concert in Germany, HR meets the event organizer [Darshan Jariwala] and his partner [Mallika Sherawat]. He also meets the event planner [Hansika Motwani] and its love at first sight. Love blossoms. After initial reservations, Hansika's father [Sachin Khedekar] approves of the match.

Things take a turn when HR is arrested. He asks Mallika, also a lawyer, to bail him out. But hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Mallika is in love with HR, but the rockstar loves Hansika. He escapes from his prison cell after taking the murdered TV journalist's father [Raj Babbar] as captive. He has to find the actual murderer in one single day, or else his sweetheart will be married off to someone else.

AAP KAA SURROOR starts off as a love story, but gets into the thriller drive subsequently. A key factor that goes in its favor is that the events unfold at a feverish pace, giving no time to the viewer to think or break into a yawn. Besides, the film bears a stylish and glossy look and the viewer is enamored by the stunning locales of Germany as also the melodious musical score that has been filmed on some striking locations. This one's an eye candy!

But what acts as an eyesore is the screenplay; the way the writers have penned a script of convenience. Take for instance the climax. The villain's confession is telecast 'Live' after a deadly chase, so much so that even the dulhan [Hansika] and her father call off the saat pheras after watching the television that's placed next to the mandap. Even the auto-rickshaw sequence looks so weird. Besides, the writers should've kept the identity of the killer concealed right till the end, like it happens in Abbas-Mustan's movies. That's the hallmark of a thriller!

Prashant Chadha knows the technicalities right. The film bears a stylish look all through, but Prashant should've been a bit more real and believable as far as the scripting is concerned. Latching on to the tried and tested stuff doesn't do justice to the tagline of the film -- 'The Real Luv Story'. HR is in form as a composer and every song is a musical gem. However, 'Mehbooba' deserved a better placement. Cinematography [Manoj Soni] is superb. Dialogues are alright.

As mentioned earlier, HR looks confident all through, although he depicts emotions like anger, anguish and sadness far more effectively towards the post-interval portions. Of course, there's room for improvement, but for someone who's playing a 'hero' for the first time, it's a fine attempt.

Hansika is a powerhouse of talent. Although she's no stranger to movies [having done a few films as a child artiste], she makes her big screen debut with supreme confidence. She's extremely photogenic too. Mallika Sherawat is interesting, although her switchover [from negative to positive] looks abrupt and artificial.

Shravan [introduced in KUCH MEETHA HO JAYE], as HR's friend, excels. Bani is fair. Sachin Khedekar does well. Darshan Jariwala goes over the top at times.

On the whole, AAP KAA SURROOR has tremendous curiosity-value attached to it. And that, in turn, will ensure a fantastic opening for the film. The superb promotion [quality and quantity] has created tremendous excitement for the film, which will result in the box-office singing a glorious tune in the final tally. For its distributors, the fabulous opening will have them singing and laughing all the way to the bank. Critics be damned, this one's for the masses!

Movie Review: Aap Kaa Surroor

Aap Kaa Surroor: Kare bore

rating: 2 out of 5

Cast: Introducing Himesh Reshammiya, Hansika Motwani, Mallika Sherawat and Raj Babbar.

Director: Prashant Chaddha

Synopsis: HR (Himesh) playing himself, goes on a concert tour to Germany accompanied by best pal cum business associate Shravan. On the eve of his first concert our 'capped' crusader encounters Ria (Hansika), his event organiser and both end up falling head over heels in love with each other at first sight. After initial opposition from her father (Sachin Khedekar), when their relationship is just about to transform into marital bliss, Himesh is arrested amidst his concert by the German Police on charges of murder of a TV journalist, Nadia. Images of Himesh trying to molest her on the night of her murder are flashed across the channels proving his direct involvement. Ria's father decides to get her married to someone else in a hurry. Helpless in jail, Himesh finally manages to escape from prison setting out to prove his innocence.

rating: 2 out of 5

Acting: Himesh's attempt at acting is not really bad. He has also been presented well like a rockstar. But his limited set of ex-pressions and the permanent sulken look gets irritating after a point of time. Hansika Motwani is a good find who makes a confident debut as a lead actress. Her eyes speak a thousand words. Mallika Sherawat projects ample oomph but doesn't impress much as an actress may be also because her character appears half baked. Darshan Jariwala as Himesh concert organiser is good.

rating: 2.5 out of 5

Direction: Debutante Prashant shows technical proficiency but fails to hold the film together. The first half appears more like bits and pieces of everything pasted together. During the pre-climax, it is announced that Ria's wedding will be on the next day. But minutes later on the same day, she is shown preparing to take her saat pheres. Did he miss that? His handling of the climax is also poor.

rating: 1.5 out of 5

Script: The film starts off well with Himesh amidst a rock concert arrested by the German police on murder charges. The first 15 minutes manage to hold your attention but once the flashback starts the pace plummets with one unbelievable situation followed by another. So much so that in the second half you stop taking the film seriously. The entire suspense angle is a total cop-out. Also, the one liners fall flat.

rating: 2 out of 5

Music: Himesh scores well in this department. The songs are already topping the charts. The Assalaam Waalaikum number shot in an ancient German church being the pick of the lot. Prashant Chaddha, who had been the director of Himesh's music videos before turning filmmaker with AKS, manages to present each number well. Mallika Sherawat's Mehbooba Mehbooba that comes at the end of the film doesn't fit in though.

rating: 3.5 out of 5

'Aap Ka Suroor' - Strictly for HR fans

By Aparajita Ghosh
Film critic, ApunKaChoice.Com

Fans of singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya will be quite pleased with his debut film as an actor – 'Aap Ka Surroor: The Moviee: The Real Luv Story'.

The movie, directed by Himesh's longtime friend Prashant Chaddha, is not based on Reshammiya's life. It is a fiction story that anyway answers some FAQs about the singer-musician.

In

his acting debut, Himesh is too uptight before the camera. For the most part he wears a brooding look that has by now become quite typical of him. And the emotions that he expresses in the film are those of sadness, pain, anguish, helplessness and anger. In fact, after some time the movie begins to look like a vanity collage of Himesh Reshammiya.

'Aap Ka Surroor' tells the story of HR (Himesh), a rock star on a musical tour in Germany. He falls in love at first sight with Riaa (Hansika Motwani), the event manager of his concert.

On the other hand, there is Ruby (Mallika Sherawat), the partner of the organizer of the concert. Ruby is in love with HR. But he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. He loves Riaa.

HR's troubles begin with the murder of a TV journalist. The finger of suspicion points towards HR and he is arrested by Stuttgart police and put behind bars.

Convinced of HR's guilt, Riaa's father (Sachin Khedekar) fixes her marriage with another man. Now, HR has only one option: to run away from police captivity and find the real killer to prove his innocence before his ladylove is married off to someone else. Will he succeed?

'Aap Ka Surroor' is based on a wafer thin plot. On top of it, the film's script and dialogues are very filmy. But director Prashant Chaddha makes the flick interesting by telling the story very stylishly and at a brisk pace. In fact, the film is akin to an outstretched music video that packs in different ingredients necessary for a masala entertainer: romance, music, drama and action.

The film's USP is its music. Songs like 'Asalaam Valekum', 'Tera Mera Milna', 'Tanhainyan' and 'Mehbooba' are a delight to ears. However, the placement of 'Mehbooba' (with Mallika) could have been better.

While Himesh impresses as a music composer of the film, he fails to make any mark as an actor. He is stiff, he is conscious of the camera and he tries to act as if he has all the pain in the world. This act begins to look superficial after a while. Anyway, considering it is his first attempt at acting, some leniency should be shown in evaluating his performance.

Hansika Motwani is cute and gorgeous. Although she is confident in front of the camera, her acting skills need some polishing.

Mallika Sherawat looks sexy and plays her part of a vamp very well. The change in her character in the second half was unexpected.

Among other actors, Raj Babbar and Sachin Khedekar have very small roles. Shravan as Himesh's sidekick is superb.

On the whole, 'Aap Ka Surroor' is worth a watch if you are a Reshammiya fan. The film's story interweaves romance, mystery and thrills in a way that will appeal to the masses.

B.O. update: 'Aap Kaa Surroor' Opens huge

Box-office is most unpredictable! The stupendous opening of Himesh Reshammiya's first film as an actor, AAP KAA SURROOR, has caught the entire film industry unaware. The film has opened to an earth-shattering response [95%-100%] everywhere, from East to West, from North to South. In fact, at several centres, the opening of this film is at par with KRRISH and DHOOM 2, the biggest openers of 2006. Incredible, isn't it?

APNE is carrying extremely positive reports and has opened to very good houses in North, but is in the range of 40% - 50% at other centres. AWARAPAN too is carrying encouraging reports, but has been affected due to multiple releases in the week. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that AAP KAA SURROOR has made a dent in the business of all films, past and present.

FILM : Aap Kaa Surroor - The Moviee, The Real Luv Story
DIRECTOR: Prashant Chadha
ACTORS: Himesh Reshammiya
RATING : *

It's been over two years since you've held this newspaper, the film reviews on this page, and a little metre that appears below it every weekend. Most reviews, I suspect, are cursorily glanced for their "star-ratings"; few actually bother with humble efforts beneath those linear constellations.

Yet, I am willing to bet my bottom buck you haven't quite paid attention to what those "stars" against film-titles on these pages literally stand for. Look over it now. Five stars on the indicator suggests a movie that could leave you speechless, at least it did the reviewer. By every measure of success, this one deserves those rarest of the rare ratings, never deflowered since its inception. Truly, I am speechless.

Some have waited this notable moment of world cinema for a while. Most have seen the excitable promos of Bombay auto-rickshaws chasing fast cars in Europe. You pretty much know what to expect. So did I. My two-word report on this monument would still read: No way!

I just watched the curio, and I am still not certain if I actually watched it. Already, it seems a blurry figment of my own nightmare. When I recover, I may tell you better and more.

But if this is a true story as claimed in the posters, then Himesh bhai, our country singer, is actually the globe's greatest, yet "humble", rock star. He flies a private jet; drives the centre of a huge limo convoy. Goris of Germany just can't get enough of him; neither can Mallika Sherawat. Most women get so intimidated by his status, they don't even entertain a warm thought of him as a harmless dream.

If the story is true again, Himesh bhai is jailed for murdering a reporter, who attempted a television sting-op on him. Of course, that's a carefully cultivated conspiracy.

But never mind that. Never mind his supposed love story. Never mind the precious reason behind his sulk (he lost his laugh on his brother's death). Never mind your mind.

The true, terrible conspiracy in this movie is actually directed against Himesh Reshammiya, the actor. When he is on screen, you'll look at nothing else. Hear his spoken voice that's deliberately dubbed to sound a vague cross between a cow's moo and a horse's nay.

Listen to him sing the Gayatri Mantra and the track 'Darde Dil Darde Jigar' solo over a guitar (please do it for me). Watch him awkwardly gesture and aimlessly gaze throughout in a jacket, a baseball cap and half a fool's cap page for a dialogue sheet. Check him out when he smiles once. Ogle at him match Mithun's steps. You'll be convinced the makers of this movie don't like this gentle soul too much. In the annals of pop-cultural history, this will go down as the lamest joke played on one man for this long.

I am told the filmmakers have even considered a sequel to this punishment, were it to pack theatres. Amen! But really, not fair. Last I read, making bad music wasn't

No buts about this -- must say that the man has guts. He's actually summoned up the nerve to pass himself a hero in this Aap ka Suroor – The Movieee without learning the ABC of acting. Also director Chadha seems to have discovered new toys like the crane and trolley.. and often makes you jump out of your skin by subjecting you to the world's largest close-ups – including those of Sachin Khedekar. Heavens!

Reshammiya tells Mallika to back off, wants to marry the misspelt Hanssikaa Motwani maybe because she's half his age and he wants to be next Cheeni Kum Bachchan. Also Mr Reshammiya's close shots frequently rest on his lips which suddenly break open to burst into song. He's the world's hottest singer. Ergo, Mallika Sherawat calls him into a room that may catch fire not because of her but because of a zillion candles flickering dangerously.

Reshammiya tells Mallika to back off, wants to marry the misspelt Hanssikaa Motwani maybe because she's half his age and he wants to be next Cheeni Kum Bachchan. Whatever, he's then involved in a sting operation – you don't want to know, see, or hear more surely. Suggestion: get a CD pack of H R's best hits instead. It'll be much more easier on the nerves than this amateur brain toaster.

Himesh to do sequel to 'Aap Ka Surroor'
By IANS
Jun 18, 2007, 09:10

MUMBAI: Music composer-singer Himesh Reshammiya brushes off all criticism of his decision to turn actor with "Aap Ka Surroor" and says he is already planning a sequel to the film which is yet to be released.

"I'll of course be a musician at heart. But I'll continue being an actor. First, though, a long break after 'Aap Ka Surroor'. I intend to take a two-month holiday. Of course, my future as an actor depends on the fate of my debut. But I'll definitely do a sequel," Himesh told us.

"Of course, Hansika (Motwani who stars in the first film) will be with me in the next film."

"The weather at all my locations has been kind. I'm feeling very grateful. We've completed the film on schedule. Yes, some people have not been too kind to me or my project. I guess everyone who enters a new field has to go through the grind. I've to prove myself. Until I do I'm open to ridicule. But 99 percent of people have been kind.

"As for the smirking minority who're questioning my right to be an actor, let the film come. I've got positive responses from everyone. I started my career as a serial producer, even then I faced rivalry. I've changed profession several times, from producing serials to composing music to singing to doing music videos and now I've come to acting. The number of professional rivals has been accordingly large.

"My acid test was the dialogue promotional clippings for 'Aap Ka Surroor'. The film didn't go thanda when the dialogues came on. In fact it has been sold to distributors everywhere. That has given me a high."

To Himesh, acting came easy. "I'm very comfortable facing the camera. I feel as much job satisfaction as an actor as I do as a musician. Now it's up to the audience to decide how much they like my acting."

The film also stars Mallika Sherawat. In fact, Saroj Khan has choreographed the song "Mehbooba" in "Aap Ka Surroor" for her. And everyone is wondering how it compares with Ganesh Hegde's "Mehbooba" in Ram Gopal Varma's "Sholay".

The movie was ok, I wasn't expecting too much as I am not really a Himesh fan, but it was alright. The storyline was ok, however I found that there were too many songs in the story, Hansika was alright, I found Himesh was trying too hard sometimes, I didn't find his acting natural at times. In general, the movie is alright.
