'Don' - a slick flick sans emotions -Subhash K Jha review

Jha is more often than not, very generous with his reviews and is eager to see the good side of every film. But here, he seems to be in an unforgiving mood and it's obvious that he hated it. God, and he's given it just one and a half stars! That's the kind of rating he gives to films like Aksar and Dil Diya Hai!

(REVIEW)
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

Rating: * 1/2

"Don ko pakadna mushqil hi nahin, namumkin bhi hai". (It's not just difficult to catch Don, it's impossible).

You could say that again! Farhan Akhtar, who once made one of Indian cinema's path breakers "Dil Chahta Hai", slips into a gamine groove to recreate Salim-Javed's script from the original film of the same name.

Let's not play the blame game. But whosoever thought a slicker version of the clever 1978 script would work better when packaged in gallons of gloss has a vision... ... that just stops short of being audacious.

This is a cheeky and chic homage to the earlier "Don". It goes to places the earlier film couldn't have dreamt of.

The film opens unnecessarily in Paris and quickly moves to Kuala Lumpur where the narrative stays put as Farhan tries to put across the story of Don, his doppelganger Vijay, the vendetta-oriented Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and Jasjeet (Arjun Rampal).

Priyanka fumes as though she had taken lessons in feminine fury from Zeenat Aman in the earlier "Don". Rampal frets and limps as though he had watched Pran in the original flick really hard.

And Shah Rukh is the twin-faced imp-cum-ogre - he snarls, sneers and taunts as he takes the role as away from Bachchan's role as humanly possible.

It isn't a performance. It's a bouquet of over-the-top expressions designed to showcase the star's ability to get the better of his character.

The narrative is very straight and razor-sharp. The confusion of identity is given a psychological twist in this re-interpreted tale of the good, the bad and the ugly.

Outwardly, this revisionist version of Chandra Barot's "Don" is slicker than anything Farhan or his chic ilk have ever attempted.

But at times you feel the slickness really gets to you. The film's outstanding topographical and technical detailing hampers the audiences' journey towards the characters.

There's not one emotionally moving sequence - neither when the sizzling Kamini (Kareena Kapoor) dances before Don to avenge her fianc's murder nor when Roma (Priyanka) takes to martial arts and guns to avenge the death of her brother.

Coldness grips the heart of this stylish motion picture. Farhan deconstructs the clever tale of glorified-gangsterism. The neo-Don increases the glam-quotient in crime beyond anything we've seen in Hindi cinema. Makes you wonder what happened to the good old morality tale?

"Don" is dangerously revisionist in its tempting overview of good and evil. Some fight scenes are so heart-in-the-mouth that their sole aim seems to be making Shah Rukh romance the rugged Malaysian hinterland.

There's no sexual frisson between Shah Rukh and Priyanka. They combat one another intellectually and physically without getting too close for comfort.

But Kareena can drive audiences crazy in the brief number "Yeh mera dil" with her radiant presence.

The background score is minimalist and the sound design portrays silences with as much reverence as the screech of rubber on roads. But the elaborately choreographed songs and dances seem to be done in the spirit of doomed desperation.

And yes "Khai ke paan benarawas wala" which carried the original "Don" to another level of excitement, misses the point completely over here. No one can chew paan (betel leaf) and jive the way Bachchan did in the original.

Don't even look for that feeling here. Farhan Akhtar wants us to escape into a realm of repressed rage and ravishing violence. So where's the question of punishment?

Let's look at this way. The other Don was a rapid-fire morality tale. This one is a slow-burn amorality tale, spiced up with mellow aromatic scents and creates a mood that's distinctly and pungently futuristic.

Don gets full marks for packaging. So much so that the content defines itself through its sleek surface.

You are right. Subhash Jha is very subtle in his interpretation of the movie. I was actually quiet disappointed with the movie myself and it reaffirms the belief that one must not tamper with classics. This was a role cut out for AB and was actually formerly proposed by Manoj Kumar to Chandra Barot. They carved this role keeping all the plus points and assets of AB. SRk should not have attempted this role coz it was not for him.

I think the ending has also offeneded the sensibiilty of the audience. People were absolutely in love with the character of Vijay and Farhan Akhtar ruined it by annhilating Vijay in his movie.

COmparisons are inevitable..

SRK simpply CANNOT carry off the role of the bumpkin.....Infact,I had expected that He would screw up the role of DOn,but would pull off Vijay with panache,as he's used to playing those goody goody roles, but he just fails...Vijay hardly has any impact, and the character isnt well etched...When SRK spouted the Advai lingo,It made me cringe🤢,He just couldnt do even as well as Ajay Devagan did in Omkara😕...The Khaike song was a disaster(SRk looked weird, and just SOOOOOOOOOO Not like a ganga kinare wala)....and Saroj Khan's choreography was BAD,....KAreena looked fat,she was no helen....

The movie seemed dated..Albeit they had used all the latest gizmos, and cars, and special effects, the movie just didnt cut any ice with anybody...The biggest problem was the plot..In the second half, too many twists were introduced, and it just left one confused as I found it a little difficult to follow(maybe because I was expecting the plot to be exactly the same as that of the predecessor's...)SOme twists thrown in at one's face just dont seem to excite,Its more confusing..Like in the old don, there were just a few suspenses(like Malik was not Malik, but he was VArdhan, and that VArdhan killed De'silva)..and why change the plot in the second half, why was De'silva made the villain,it was Malik a ka Vardhan who was the villain in the original😕.......In the new one, there are so many twists,it becomes hard to follow, especially for those whom have watched the old don....Too complicated second half.....

SRK can never be AB...AB was classy, and he looked evil and wicked,so effortlessly..SRK overacts and hams supreme and made me cringe with his facs contorting into all possible proportions 🤢 ......AB's don had a plethora of shades....from evil,to conniving,to innocent,to that of a dork, and even certain comic elements...SRK lacks those shades,AB's performance was effortless,SRK's looks laboured and strained..

It proves that Ab's classics are best left alone....SRK and FArhan burnt their fingers trying to remake one,so better not to remake anymore(apparently,Salman khan and his brothers are remaking amar akbar antony 🤢
)...SRK is best suited to play the candyfloss roles he excels in,because,as much as I might hate to admit it,he does well in the romantic KJO kinda movies..He better stick to the tried and tested formula...He isnt good enough to pull off Any of AB's roles....AB is in a totally different league alltogether 😃

No it is not just a new film. It is a remake and is a lift off. People will go in the cinema and wonder well I have heard this dialogue and this dialogue and yet this dialogue sounds so goofy when SRK hams and sounded so crisp when Amitabh delivers. You can't charge a huge counter price to cinemagoers and not expect them to dissect the movie if it is bad. This movie was not just bad it was pathetic. Farhan Akhtar has shown how juvenile he is. I actually despise directors who just want to mess around with a classic movie and script just because they are on a self glorification trip. SRK is also hugely repsonsible for mucking around coz DON was an obsessive role for him. He claims to have embarked in the movie industry becasue he was mesmerized by AB's performance. My question to this imbecile is that why couldn't he have just left a class performance and a movie alone. why did he have to taint the script, and the image of Don and Vijay so well portrayed by Amitabh Bacchan.

A director like Chandra Barot was not one of the greatest directors but he produced a slick film with just AB in mind. So everything was desigend around him. can you imagine a dwarf like SRK who hams, and controrts and sulks and gives a perpetual constipated look delivering what was one of the most formidable performances by Mr. Bacchhan.

I just think that SRK should not have played with fire not when he has a Paheli, a KANK which are supreme disasters under his belt. This is the third disaster in a row. He needs to go back to basics of acting.
