Chapter 8

Veer: (Worried) Dharam, tum theek to ho na?

Dharam: Pata nahi Veer.

Dharam was lying, and he knew it. He felt like his heart had been ripped out and given to Sneha. It was strange to fall for a girl and love her so deeply in such a short space of time, unless……unless she was the one. Yes, he knew it all along. She was the one he wanted, but also the one who was off-limits to him.

He was so deep in his thoughts, that he didn't notice Veer and Sandhya were still with him.

Veer: Sneha ki ma ko Aryavrath kyon nahi pasand hai?

Sandhya: Yeh ek raaz he.

Veer: Yeh kaisa raaz hai, jiske baare mein tum hume bhi nahi bata sakti?

Sandya: Yeh ek aisa raaz hai, jiske baare mein mujhe kisi ne kuch nahi bataya hai.

Suddenly Dharam spoke.

Dharam: Nahi, main aisa nahi kar sakta. Aryanagar ke liye mein……

And still speaking to himself, Dharam walked away.

Sandhya: Lagta hai tumhara bhai Sneha ke pyaar mein paagal ho gaya hai.

Veer: (Angrily) Na hi mera bhai paagal hai. Na hi vo tumhari bevakuf behen se pyaar karta hai.

Sandhya: (Angrily) Meri behen ko bevakuf mat bulao.

Veer: To mere bhai ko paagal mat bulao.

Sandhya: Bulaungi! Kyunki vo hai paagal!

And with that, Sandhya walked away, leaving a fuming Veer to calm himself down.

Veer creeped silently into the tent. He had made sure that Sandhya was far away, tending to her horse, before entering the room himself. Now he looked around. The princess must have kept her sack here, with all her clothes in it. If only he could find it before she came……

Veer: Haan! Vo raha!

Veer walked to the chair. He retrieved two pieces of a stuffed, torn doll from his pocket and gently started opening the sack.

He was so intent on doing it as quietly as possible, that he didn't here the footsteps as someone entered the room.

Suddenly.

Dharam: Veer? Tum yahaan kya kar rahe ho?

Veer: Dharam….voh mein…..mein us Ghamandi Sherni ka saaman lautane aaya tha, lekin voh yahaan to hai hi nahi.

Veer turned his back from Dharam, dropped the doll in, and quickly tied the sack.

Dharam: Hume lagta hai tumhare yahaan aane ki kuch aur vaja hai.

Dharam: Vahi vaja…

Veer: Theekh hai. Abhi chalo.

The two brothers walked out of the tent, both wearing smirks on their faces.

It was time for the three royals to part and go their separate ways. They were just saying their farewells.

Dharam: Aap se milkar hume bohot khushi hui, Rajkumari Sandhya. Hume umeed hai, hum dono phir milenge.

Sandhya: Milenge, aur vo bhi meri behen ke shaadi ke mandap mein. Jab tum doni ki shaadi ho rahi hogi.

Dharam: Hum aisa nahi kar sakte.

Sandhya: Kyun? Darte ho meri bua se?

Dharam: Aisi baat nahi hai.

Sandhya: To kaisi baat hai?

Dharam remained silent.

Sandhya: (Angrily) Theekh hai Rajkumar Dharam. Mujhe bhi ek darpok Jijaji nahi chahiye. Aur mujhe pura bharosa hai ki meri behen ko aap jaisa pati nahi chahiye. Umeed hai aaj ke baad aapse meri kabhi mulakaat na ho.

(Turns to Veer) Aur tum to mere parchayi se bhi dur rehna.

Veer: Tumhare peeche to ek paagal aadmi hi bhag sakta hai.

Sandhya: Isiliye to keh rahi hoon. Mujhse dur raho.

Sandhya mounts her horse and rides off with speed.

Veer: Ghamandi Sherni.

Dharam: Chalo Veer.

Dharam and Veer mount their horses and start riding.

Veer: Us Ghamandi Sherni ko kya lagta hai? Ki voh pure dunya ki Maharani hai?! Har baat pe ladti hai, har baat par naak chada kar chale jaati hai.

Dharam: Tum bhi to bohot ladaku ho. Aur agar tumhari baat koi na maane, to tum bhi naak chada kar chale jaate ho.

Veer: (Angrily) Tumhare kehne ka matlab kya hai?

Dharam: Kuch nahi.

After a while, Veer starts complaining about Sandhya again, all the way to Aryanagar.

Meanwhile, Sandhya had reached her palace, and was already telling her younger brother, Arjun, all about the fair, and of course, complaining about Veer.

Sandhya: Aur phir mene Veer ko hara diya. Sab Dharam ki vaje se.

Arjun: Lekin aap Sneha didi ke saath kyon nahi thi? Aapko to Veer pasand bhi nahi hai.

Sandhya: (Hesitant) Kyunki……kyunki…….kyunki tum to jaante ho, mujhe gudiyon se khelna nahi pasand hai.

Arjun: To aap akele bhi to jaa sakti thi.

Sandhya: Jaa to rahi thi, phir Veer ne mere saath shart lagayi, bas, ho gaya hum dono mein mukabla.

Arjun: Accha.

Sandhya: Ab mein age ka bataun?

Arjun: Haan.

Sandhya spent half an hour telling Arjun all about her adventures at the fair, until Arjun interrupted her again.

Arjun: Didi, aap is Veer ki ek chitr banao.

Sandhya: (Amused) Kyun?

Arjun: Banao na.

Sandhya: Lekin kyun?

Arjun: Main dekhna chahta hoon, yeh kaisa mahaan vyakti hai, jisne meri behen ko itna tang kiya. Aapko tang karna to mera kaam hai.

Sandhya: (Amused and annoyed) Arjun!

Sandhya picked up a pillow and started hitting her brother with it. Arjun ran around the room being chased by Sandhya.

Finally, Arjun begged for forgiveness, and pleaded Sandhya to paint Veer. Sandhya agreed and set to work. Arjun left the room, leaving her sister to work on her painting.

After a while, Maharaj Sumeshwar entered Sandhya's room. He smiled at seeing his daughter concentrating hard. He was sure her painting would turn out beautifully. He looked over her shoulder and was surprised by what he saw.

Sumeshwar: Sandhya, tum Veer ka chitr kyun bana rahi ho.

Sandhya didn't look up.

Sandhya: Arjun ne bolo tha.

Sumeshwar: Bas, yahi vajah hai?

Sandhya: Kyun, aur kaunsi vajah o sakti hai.

Sumeshwar: Chalo, jaane do. Bolo kya kaam tha.

Finally, Sandhya looked up.

Sandhya: Aapse kuch puchna tha.

Realising that this would take long, Sumeshwar sat down on Sandhya's bed. Sandhya left her painting and went to sit with her father.

Sumeshwar: Bolo Sandhya, kya baat hai?

Sandhya: Voh….aap…mera matlab hai.

Sumeshwar: Bolo, itna hadbada kyun rahi ho?

Sandhya sighed loudly, and blurted out everything thing.

Sandhya: Aapki aur maa ki pehli mulakaat kaise hui?

Sumeshwar sat silent for a moment, looking as if his whole body had frozen. Then, in a husky voice he started talking.

Sumeshwar: Yeh tum achaanak kyun jaana chahti ho.

Sandhya: Bas aise hi.

Sumeshwar raised his eybrows.

Sandhya: Aap batayiye naa pitaji.

Sumeshwar (Smiling) Theekh hai, to suno.

Humari pehli mulakaat ek takraar thi. Voh ek tokri mein phal laa rahi thi, aur mein Aryavardhan ka ek Sandesh padh raha tha.

Sandhya: Aap Maharaj Aryavardhan ko bachpan se jaante the?!

Sumeshwar: Haan. Aryavardhan aur mein sab kuch ek saath karte the. Balki, hume pyaar bhi ek saath hua.

Kher, na tumhari maa saamne dekh rahi thi, aur na mein. Aur ho gayi humari takraar. Tumhare maa ke phal to gir gaye, lekin usko mene pakad liya.

Sandhya: Maa kaise dikhti thi?

Sumeshwar's eyes became watery.

Sandhya: Arrey, maine kuch galat kaha?

Sumeshwar: Nahi.

Sandhya: Toh?

Sumeshwar: Kuch nahi.

Tumhari maa bilkul tumhare tarah dikhti thi.

Sandhya: Aur aap bachpan mein kaise dikhte the?

Sumeshwar: Bachpan nahi, pandrah saal ka tha mein.

Sandhya: Theekh hai. To aap tab kaise dikhte the.

Sumeshwar: Um……soch lo…..bilkul Veer ke tarah.

Sandhya: Oh.

Sumeshwar: Hm. Ab socho. Pandrah saal ki ek ladki aur ek ladka. Un dono mein takraar.

Sandhya closed eyes and imagined what Sumeshwar was telling her. Veeer was walking towards her, reading a message. And she was walking towards Veer carrying fruit in a basket. Suddenly, they collide. Her fruit basket drops, but Veer grabs her. Sandhya stands up and Veer lets go of Sandhya's hand. Veer smiles.

Sandhya(Sandhya's mum): Dekh ke nahi chal sakte!

Sandhya opened her eyes. She was back in her room.

Sandhya: Lekin pitaji, maa ka naam kya tha?

Sumeshwar: Kadambari.

Sandhya closes her eyes again. Soon she's back where she was before, with her fruit basket. This time, she imagines her father's voice as Veer speaks.

Veer(Sumeshwar):Arrey! Mene tumhari madat ki, aur tumne mujhe shukriya bhi nahi kaha!

Kadambari: To mene kab kaha meri madat karo?!

Sumeshwar:Theekh hai. Vaise bhi mujhe ek jungli billi ki madat nahi karni hai.

Kadambari: Jao jao. Mujhe tum jaise bigde rahis ki madat ki koi zaroorat nahi hai.

Sumeshwar: Jaa raha hoon.

Sumeshwar picked up his scroll and walked away.

Sandhya opened her eyes. Her father had stopped speaking.

Sandhya: (Disappointed) Bas?

Sumeshwar: (Amused) Haan. Yeh thi humari pehli mulakat.

Sandhya: Phir….phir aapko pyaar kaise hua?

Sumeshwar: Voh to ek bohot lambi kahani hai. Sunogi?

Sandhya: Haan.

Just as Sumeshwar was about to say something, a messenger walked in.

Messenger: Maharaj, Rajkumar Vikram aapko bula rahe hai.

Sumeshwar: Abhi aaya.

The messenger went away.

Sandhya: Lekin aapki kahani ka kya hoga pitaji?

Sumeshwar: Voh hum tumhe kabhi aur sunayenge.

Sandhya: Theekh hai.

The king turned to leave the room. Sandhya stopped him, reached on her heels and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Sumeshwar: Yeh kis lye tha?

Sandhya: Aapne mujhe voh kahani sunayi na, isliye.

Sumeshwar smiled and left the room. Sandhya started working on her painting of Veer again.
