Part 1
Driving home at four in the morning, Angad stifled yet another yawn. He had been driving for two hours straight and the late hour as well as sleep deprivation was taking its toll. He could hardly keep his eyes open and he mentally cursed himself for not stopping for coffee at a caf. He had been on the move for the past two days and hadn't been able to sleep a wink during that time.
He increased the speed of his car, hoping to reach home by dawn when his headlight fell on a figure running in his direction. He immediately applied the brakes. SCREECH!!
The figure stopped, raising its hand in an attempt to shield itself from the collision. The car skidded to a stop an inch from the person and Angad stepped outside ready to blast the person for such a foolish act. He stepped in front of the person and realized that it was not a man, rather a woman standing in front of him.
She lowered her hand from her face and he gasped at the sight for standing before him, was a badly bruised beautiful girl. She had a black eye and scratches on her arms and neck. The shalwar kameez she was wearing was torn in some places. But it was the fearful look in her eyes that abated his anger and he took a deep calming breath.
Girl: Help me, she whispered before she fainted and he rushed forth to catch her before she hit the floor. Angad gazed at her angelic face for there was no denying her beauty, despite all the bruises. He stood there gazing at her for an eternity before picking her up and putting her in the back of the car. He contemplated his decision to take her home but he could not just leave her here to die or worse..
He reached home by dawn and walked inside with the unconscious girl just as everyone sat down to breakfast. As soon as he entered, everyone stared at him dumbstruck before running towards him.
Naina: Angad beta, who is she? What happened to her? She questioned when she saw the state the girl was in.
Angad: I have no idea. He narrated how he had found her. I couldn't leave her there so I brought her home.
Naina: Good! Why don't you take her to the guest room, I'll go get the first aid box. Angad made his way upstairs, his eyes never leaving her face. He laid her down on the bed with a gentleness he had never exhibited before. All this was observed by Naina.
Naina: Here is the first aid box. Why don't you go get some sleep. You look dead tired. I'll take care of her.
Angad: No mom, you go, I'll look after her. He took the box from her and dipped some medicine over a cotton ball and rubbed them over her wounds gently. Naina stood at the door and watched her son fuss over a complete stranger. Angad had never taken to any girl before and she hoped that this girl was THE ONE. He held her arm tenderly as he applied medicine there. There were imprints of fingers on her arm as if someone had held her tightly and his blood boiled at the sight. The girl shifted, he cooled down and came towards her. There was fear in her eyes.
Angad: I'm Angad Khanna. You are?
Girl: Kripa, Kripa Sharma.
Angad:Why don't you go back to sleep. You're safe her. I won't hurt you. She looked at him with fear and trust in her eyes and smiled at him.
Kripa: Thank you she whispered before drifting off to sleep. Angad got up and went to his room which happened to be opposite Kripa's and went to sleep immediately due to the tiring day.
Part 2
He was awoken from his slumber when he heard Kripa screaming and rushed into her room to see she was having a nightmare. She was murmuring.
Kripa: Please! Let me go. Angad sat down near her and waited for her to wake up. She woke up with a start and hugged him, sobbing in his arms. Naina who had heard her came inside to see her son sitting in bed with Kripa sobbing in his arms. She stood there and admired the picture they made. The girl had an affect on her son that none other had ever had. Kripa finally went back to sleep hugging Angad who was so exhausted himself that he slumped down and slept himself.
The two woke up around night and moved apart guiltily.
Angad: I'm sorry, it's just that I as so tired that …he was cut off by Kripa.
Kripa: I understand. Tank you for staying here with me.
Angad: It's ok. Why don't you go freshen up, I'll go get some fresh clothes for you. He borrowed some clothes from his sister Aaliya who gave him a turtleneck shirt and jeans. He then went to take a shower himself.
Kripa was really grateful that he had taken such great care of her and was considerate enough to get her a turtleneck which would cover up if not all but most of the bruises. She touched the purplish bruise on her eye and grimaced. Kripa stepped outside the room and bumped into Angad.
Angad: You must be famished. Let's go eat. She nodded and smiled at him. He led her downstairs and into the dining hall where everyone was assembled for dinner. KRipa, I'd like you to meet my family. This is , my mom, Naina Khanna, my sister Aaliya, my bro Kartick and my dadi...He went on introducing her to everyone. Kripa greeted everyone with a smile and namste and bent down to take the blessing of dadi and Naina who were both amazed and delighted and both were thinking along the same lines 'she would make an excellent wife for Angad.'
Kripa sat down a bit apprehensively, expecting everyone to start questioning her on her plight but to her surprise, no questions came. Everyone ate dinner in harmony, talking about trivial things and she relaxed visibly. This was because Angad had already warned his family from asking her questions as he felt that she was not yet ready to face all that. Finally Naina took the initiative and addressed her.
Naina: Beta where are you from?
Kripa: I'm from Delhi.
Naina: And your family? What do your parents do?
Kripa: My dad is Suryaban Sharma he's the owner of a chain of restaurants in Delhi. He is currently in America with my mom.
Naina: Sharma…. I've heard the name before. She went into deep thought and then exclaimed in delight. Gythari! You're Gythari Sharma's daughter?
Kripa: Yes! How do you know my mom?
Naina: She was I mean is a really good friend of mine.
Kripa got up feeling uneasy and murmuring an excuse, fled up to the guest room she was currently occupying. Naina made a move as to follow her but she was beaten to it by Angad who went after the distressed girl. He entered the room to find a very stressed out Kripa pacing the room. She looked a bit scared and startled when she first saw him but relaxed when she realized it was her 'savior' Angad. She tried to smile at him but failed to do so.
Angad: Kripa I hope you don't mind but can I ask you something? How did you end up here? Like this. Kripa stiffened and Angad regretted asking her this.
Angad: I'm sorry I shouldn't interfere.
Kripa: No! You have a right to now. You've helped me out so much. I owe you my life. I came here with my fianc Prithvi. His best friend was getting married so when he invited me along, I didn't think of anything and agreed immideately. In facr I was gullible enough to believe him when he told me that there were no more hotel rooms available. I never thought he would get ideas when I agreed to share a room with him. I was stupid enough to believe that a five star hotel was completely booked. At this point, Kripa broke down and Angad clenched his fist as the entire scenario played out in front of him. He could very well imagine what had happened next.
Angad: You don't have to go on if you don't want to. You've been through enough already.
Kripa: No let me get it out once and for all for the very thought scares me. Angad placed a comforting hand over hers as Kripa took in a deep breath and continued. After the wedding, we got to the hotel room and Prithvi was pretty drunk. He came near me and tried to… Kripa broke off and looked at the ground. He tried to rape me! She looked both fearful and embarrassed. Angad squeezed her hand reassuringly but inside, his blood was boiling and he felt like killing this unknown Prithvi.
Angad: You escaped?
Kripa: I bit his hand and ran away. I ran out of the room, and out to the parking lot. I got in my car and drove off but my car stopped some distance from where you found me. I was so scared Angad, she admitted. He turned into a monster right before my eyes, and I felt bewildered, incapable of any action.
Anagd: Shh… Its okay, everything is okay. You're safe. But don't you want to call your parents and explain. They must be worried about you.
Part 3
Kripa: They're in America at the moment but the call me everyday. They must be worried. I've been meaning to call them but I don't know what to say, what to tell them and how to begin.
Angad: I'm here, I'll do the talking you just call them up and leave the rest to me. He handed the phone to Kripa who dialed the number and pressed the phone to her ears. The phone rang and was picked up on the 2nd bell.
Someone: Hello!
Kripa: Mama, she said.
Gythari: Kripa beta where have you been? I've been calling you for ages but you didn't pick up. I was so worried. I even tried calling Prithvi but he wasn't answering his phone either. At the mention of the name, Kripa burst into tears and handed the phone to Angad.
Angad: Hello.
Gythar: Prithvi is that you? What happened to Kripa? Why is she crying? She questioned worried about her daughter.
Angad: Auntie I'm Angad Khanna, a friend of Kripa. Actually I found her yesterday. He then relayed the whole tale to her and Gythari was both horrified at what had happened or what might have happened to her daughter and grateful to Angad for all that he had done for her.
Gythari: Thank you so much beta. We'll be back as soon as possible. Please look after for our Kripa for us and thank you once again for being there for her. Anagd then went to console Kripa and left for his room to sleep. Gythari called him up later to inform him that they would come directly there from America for Kripa but their flight was scheduled for 2 days later. Till then, she requested a more than happy Naina to keep Kripa with them who agreed at once. Gythari on her part was glad Kripa was with her friend and knew that she was well taken care of.
The next day, Angad took Kripa shopping, for she was gloomy all day and depressed too. Everyone who knew him was surprised for Anagd being a typical guy hated shopping but he couldn't bear to see Kripa so down. He wanted to be the one to bring a smile on her face for her smile brightened his day. During the journey, the two chattered about their life, rather Kripa chattered non stop and Angad listened to her.
They arrived at the mall and did some shopping for Kripa who was in need of clothes as the ones she had borrowed from Aaliya were a bit loose on her. After shopping, Angad and Kripa made their way to the food court for some much needed nourishement however the sight of a person made Kripa stop in her tracks. She turned pale and whispered, Prithvi!.
Angad did a 360 degree turn and surveyed the object of Kripa's misery with loath. He wasn't that bad looking but he had a cruel twist to his mouth and his eyes were shifty. As if conscious that he was being observed, Prithvi looked around and came face to face with Kripa. His eyes narrowed and a malicious grin settled on his mouth. Angadwatched Kripa shaking like a leaf and stepped in front of her like a shield protecting her from the evil eye.
As soon as Prithvi saw Angad hovering over Kripa like a knight in shining armour, the grin was wiped off his face and he scowled. He knew who this was. It was Angad Khanna, entrepreneur extraordinaire. But the real question was, how on earth does Kripa know him. He took a step near them and smirked as Kripa's distress became more pronounced. Standing next to her, Angad put a comforting arm around Kripa's shoulders and gave them a squeeze. She smiled at him thankfully and took in a deep breath so as to prepare herself for the up coming confrontation.
As soon as Prithvi stepped in front of her, Angad moved forward and issued him a non verbal warning which left Prithvi bewildered as well as scared. Could Kripa have told him everything? He questioned himself and the answer became obvious when the next minute Anagd's fist collided with his jaw.
Angad: That was for what you did to Kripa. If you so much as look in her direction again, I will kill you, he said and dragged Kripa out of there which set a lot of tongues wagging. The elusive Angad Khanna fighting with someone ove a girl, this was interesting. Meanwhile Angad groaned for his temporary lack of control over his anger. This would make headlines for tomorrow's paper and while he was used to dealing with all sort of good and bad publicity, his main concern was for Kripa.
Rather than head home, as Kripa had expected him to, Angad changed his direction towards a quiet hotel where the two enjoyed lunch. Kripa had no words to express her gratitude to Angad who had swooped in and saved her all over again, possibly tarnishing his reputation in the process. But her admiration and gratitude gave way to a new feeling, one of greater meaning, but one Kripa was trying hard to ignore.
