At the picnic grounds Kanya was completely blown away by Ranbir. He helped unload the bus along with Harpal and Suhaas, while Chunnu kept the ladies entertained. Then as the youngsters had a game of antakshri going, Ranbir chose to help the ladies set up for lunch, and the weird thing is that he was having a good time doing it. He was cracking jokes with her mom and Adita, who were laughing like she had never seen them laugh. Kanya couldn't figure out why he was doing all of this. Was this all part of some new plan?
Kanya saw Ranbir sitting next to her dad talking about something. She walked over to where they were to grab a few bottles of water and was surprised at what she had heard.
R- Haan Papa main dekha hai, aaisa hota hai. Vaise bhi, ek check up hi toh hai, iss mein kaunsi badi baath hai. Baas aapko sirf doctor ke paas jaana hai kuch ghante ke liyeh, phir aapka test results aajayega. (Yes dad it does happen like that, I have seen it myself. Besides, its only a check up, waht is the bid deal? All you have to do is go to the doctors for a few hours, then your test results will come.)
Anand- Baath sirf jaane ka nahin hai, yeh saab badi badi tests ke paise humare paas nahin hai. (Its not only about going; getting all these big tests done takes money that we dont have.)
R- Aare, baas itni is baath, main hoon naa. Aap paiso ka chinta mat kijiyeh. (That's it, I'm here, aren't I? You don't have to worry about money.)
Anand- Aare tum kaise deh sakte ho, tum toh is ghaar ka damad ho. (How can you give us money like that, you are the son-in-law of this family?)
R- Aapne mujhe beta maana hai naa, phir bete se lene mein kya harj? Aab aur koi behes nahin, main agle hafte ke liyeh appointment nikalta hoon. (You consider me your son don't you? Then what is the harm in taking the money? Now I don't want to hear anything, i will make an appointment for next week.)
Anand- Tik hai, aagar tum zoor deh rahe ho, toh… (Alright, if you are forcing me...)
R- Good! Saath saath mein Pammi the Mummy ka bhi ek appointment leta hoon, physical check up ek liyeh. (Ranbir glanced at Anand who looked rather nervous) Relax Papa, sirf colonoscopy hai. (he turned to look towards the ladies) Main abhi aata hoon, woh Adita bohot kaam kaar rahi hai, usse bhi toh thoda aram milni chahiyeh, especially iss halat mein…main abhi aaya Papa. (Good, I will also get an appointment for Pammi the Mummy for a physical check up. Relax Dad, its only a colonoscopy. I will be right back, Adita is working really hard; she should get some rest, especially in her condition. I'll be right back.)
As Kanya watched Ranbir leave she was blown away by the fact that Ranbir cared so much for her parents and her family. What was going on? She didn't know what plans Ranbir had up his sleeve, but she was definitely going to find out what it was!
After a delicious lunch, the two mothers-in-law pushed Ranbir and Kanya to take a nice romantic walk by the garden, even though both Kanya and Ranbir resisted; in the then the mothers won, they always did. Chunnu volunteered to join them but his attempts were shot down by both Malika and Pammi, much to Shanta's dismay, even she didn't get a chance.
As Ranbir and Kanya walked, Kanya watched him. They had an odd silence between them that was never there. Kanya tried to remember when was the last time they had fought or something like that (since they could never just talk…lol), and the only thing she could remember was the day after holi when she had yelled at him. She couldn't believe it had been that long. Ranbir wasn't the same Ranbir, he had changed, and that wasn't necessarily a good thing. Kanya became distracted when they came up to a rose garden; it had every color of rose you could imagine, Kanya loved roses and she was blown away by the beauty.
K- Yeh saab phool kitne khubsurat hai! Hai naa? (Wow, these flowers are so beautiful. Aren't they?)
R- Haan.(Yes)
K- You know, I love roses, mujhe gulab bohot pasand hai.
R- Nahin, mujhe pata nahin tha…I'm sure Chunnu ko pata hai. (No, I didn't know...I'm sure that Chunnu knows.
K- Chunnu, haan, Chunnu toh mere bare mein saab kuch jaanta hai, he's my best friend, I just love him! (Chunnu, he knows everything about me, he is my best friend, I just love him!)
Kanya bent down to tear and rose for herself. It was a beautiful big white rose. She brought it up to her nose to smell it when suddenly she was poked by one of its thrones and her finger began to bleed.
K- Ouch!
R- Kya hua? (he asked worried) (What happened?)
K- Woh…kaante (she held up her finger) (Umm...a thorn.)
R- Oh my God!
Before Ranbir or Kanya realized what was going on, Ranbir had taken Kanya's finger into his mouth to stop the bleeding. Kanya sucked in a breath of air as she felt the warmth form Ranbir begin to seep into her body. They hadn't been this close ever, unless they were fighting or just to show the family, but never voluntarily. She could smell his after shave, she could feel him breathing, she could see the genuine worry in his face.
R- Tum bhi naa Kanya, aapna bilkul khayal nahin rakhte! Aagar tumhe kuch hojata toh? (Kanya, you don't take care of yourself! What if something happened to you?)
K- Relax Ranbir, baas choti si chot hai. (Relax Ranbir, it's a small cut.)
R- Phir bhi…aagar kuch hojata toh, mera kya… (Still...what if something happend...I...)
Ranbir stopped talking realizing what he was doing. A long and uncomfortable silence stretched between them, neither one not knowing what to say, the just walked. It was Kanya who finally broke the silence.
K- Um, kya baath hai Ranbir, kahin dino se dekh rahi hoon, tum badla badla sa lag rahe ho. (Um..what's up Ranbir, for the past few i have noticed that you seem to have changed.)
R- Hmm…
K- Saab kuch tik toh hai naa? (Everything alright I hope?)
R- Haan. (Yes)
K- Aagar saab kuch tik hai, toh phir tum khoye khoye se kyun rehte ho? (If everything is ok, then why do you seem lost in your thoughts?)
Ranbir stopped and turned to face Kanya, he came up close to her, put his hands on her shoulder and looked into her eyes. Kanya had never realized how dreamy his chocolaty brown eyes really were, even she got lost in them for a moment before Ranbir spoke again.
R- Abhi bhi tumhe kuch samaj mein nahin aaya? (You still don't get it?)
That was it, that was all he said before he put his hands in his pocket and walked away. Kanya didn't know what to say, she was completely stumped. What did Ranbir mean by that? Why was he being so cryptic?
Before they knew it the picnic had come to an end, the entire time Kanya kept her eyes on Ranbir trying to make sense of what was going on. He was being the perfect son-in-law, watching out for everyone, it was so different. When they boarded the bus to go back home Kanya thought maybe she had to sit with Ranbir, but again she didn't, because Chunnu pulled her to sit with him. When they reached home Ranbir said good night to everyone and was off to bed when Chunnu called him back.
C- Aare, Ranbir, kya Kanya humare saath cards khel sakti hai? (Hey Ranbir, can Kanya play cards with us?)
R- Mujhse kyun pooch rahe ho? (Why are you asking me?)
C- Tumse nahin poochenge toh aur kis se poochenge, after all, tum uske paati ho. (If we don't ask you, who are we supposed to ask? After all, you are her husband.)
R- Kanya aapni marzi ki malik hai, uss hi se pooch lo. (Kanya does what she wants, ask her yourself.)
Saying that he went inside the room. Kanya, Chunnu and Shanta were all expecting Ranbir to make some sort of scene but he didn't, Kanya was just getting more and more confused by the minute.
