What do you folks think about this???
To everyone disliking Amaal, Baseer, et al…
Starting with that day, Kanya was always at Ranbir's side. As soon as it was ten in the morning, Kanya was there; at night she never left a minute before eleven. She had become such a regular that even the staff at the hospital knew her on a fist name basis. Kanya had made it a habit to get to the hospital before it was even ten, so the nurses and doctors allowed her to come in as early as nine most days. Even at night, they didn't bug her or push her leave, even after the clock had struck twelve midnight. The hospital had become like a second home to her; it was funny because she spent more time at the hospital than she did at the Godbole residence.
The Nanda's had given a car to Kanya so that she could have it at her disposal at any time, day or night. This made Kanya's commute to the hospital much easier; she didn't have to worry about bringing all of her things, getting there on time in the morning and the biggest help is that she didn't have to worry about transportation when she went home at night.
Everyone in the family understood the difficult situation that Kanya was in. Whenever she was home, which wasn't often, they would try and make her laugh or even just smile. Even since the accident they could count on one hand how many times they had seen Kanya smile. Kanya only smiled and laughed in one place, when she was with Ranbir. When Kanya was him she always talked, laughed and smiled; just like she used, she was the old Kanya in Ranbir's presence.
Kanya really took the doctors advice to heart, she always talked to Ranbir. She talked to him as if she was really having full fledged conversations with him. She told him about what was going on in the news, what was happening at the house, what was happening in her life; she would talk to him about anything and everything.
Every morning Kanya got up at 6 or at the latest by 7. After she was ready and the driver had gotten to the house she would leave. The first thing she did every day, before going to the hospital, was going to the mandir. She would pray for Ranbir and his well being, take ashirwad form the pandit and then go to the hospital. The pandit kept telling her, everyday, that Ranbir would be fine. He saw the devotion and love that Kanya had for her husband and he said that God didn't ignore the heart felt prayers of his followers. He had told her once, "Bagwan ke ghaar mein dehr hai, andher nahin." Kanya kept repeating that line to herself, it kept hope and faith alive in her heart.
Once she reached the hospital she would get a report form the doctors and nurses as to how Ranbir was the previous night, any changes and things like that. Then she would come into Ranbir's room and greet him. She would single handedly take care of him from then on. She did everything, from giving him is sponge bath to changing his hospital gowns. Kanya was really tired of seeing him in hospital gowns so she had gotten him some pajamas for him to wear. Just seeing him in normal clothing made him look healthier, it helped Kanya somewhat. She would make sure his IV's were not kinked or running low; usually she would get the nurse to change his IV bag before the alarm went off, Kanya didn't want a repeat of the fiasco from before.
In between of sitting with Ranbir, she needed something to do, so she took up knitting. At first it felt really weird to be knitting because Kanya was never a very good 'home maker', but as time went by she enjoyed it. She had begun knitting socks and things for her family. Her favorite subject was the baby that was on the way, she was planning to make her niece or nephew the cutest dressed baby out there.
She also had learned the therapy lesions that the physical therapists were giving Ranbir. Kanya was now an expert in range-of-motion exercises. She did the exercises at least twice a day with Ranbir to make sure that his muscles stayed flexible and somewhat strong; since they weren't being used, there was fear of determination, but Kanya wasn't going to let that happen. She monitored, cleaned and dressed all of his wounds. She had learned how to do it properly from the nurses, because she didn't want Ranbir to get some sort of infection from what she did.
At night Kanya would make sure that Ranbir was settled properly, made sure that his medications were given, she made sure that the room wasn't completely dark because Ranbir like just a little bit of light at night, so Kanya would leave the dim light on for him. Before she left she would kiss him and say goodnight.
Then, the whole routine would start all over again the next morning. Kanya had become lost in Ranbir and his welfare that she didn't notice four weeks fly by in the blink of an eye.
This particular morning Kanya had arrived a little later than she usually did. She came in to see that things were exactly as she had left them the night before, not that she expected anything to be misplaced. She put down her purse and the things that were in her hand, and then she made a B-line for Ranbir. Once she reached his bed side, she greeted him the way she had been doing for weeks; first she ran her hand across his forehead and through his hair, then she leaned in to place a kiss on his cheek.
K- Good morning (she whispered)
Then she pulled back Ranbir's covers so that she could reposition him. The doctors had given her a 'turning schedule' that Kanya had to follow strictly. The schedule required Ranbir to be repositioned every two hours, because if he wasn't, he would be at serious risk for getting bed sores. That was something that Kanya refused to allow him to get; so like clock work she made sure that he was moved every two hours. So just like every morning, Kanya repositioned Ranbir onto his left side. She stepped away only when she was sure that the pillows were secure under him and that he was comfortable.
Kanya moved to open the curtains so that the sun was able to shine into the room. She had just cracked open the window's when the driver had walked in, his hands full of things.
K- Woh samaan vahaan table paar rakh dijiyeh. Shukriyah, aab aap jaa sakte hai. Aagar muhjhe aapki zarurat padegi toh main phone kardungi. (the driver turned to leave) Suniyeh, aagar maine aapko phone nahin kiya toh aap regular time pe aa jana. (You can put the things down there. Thank you, now you can go. If I need you I will call. Excuse me, if I don't call you then come at the regular time.)
The driver nodded his head in agreement and then excused himself.
K- Dekho, aaj main tumhare liyeh kya laai hoon. (she talked as she moved around the room) Yellow roses. Mujhe paata hai ke tumhe orchid's saabse zyada paasand hai. Lekin main kya karoon, dukan mein orchind aaj nahin thi. Vaise bhi, haar rooz toh orchid's hi laati hoon, aaj kuch alag hi sahi. (she arranged the dozen roses in a vase) Tum joh bhi kaho, yeh gulab bhi bohot aache hai. I hope, ke tumhe pasand aaya. (Look at what I have brought for you, yellow roses. I know that you like orchid's the most. But what could I do, there were no orchid's at the shop. Anyway, I bring orchids everyday, so we will do something different for today. I don't care what you say, the yellow roses are nice. I hope that you like them.)
Kanya went around humming as she placed the vase holding the flowers on one of the tables next too Ranbir's bed. There were other faces that held flowers in other areas of the room. Kanya had tried to keep the room colorful and lively so she had decorated it somewhat. Along with the flowers, Kanya had brought in some family pictures for Ranbir. She thought that just having pictures of his whole family was better than nothing. At the beginning everyone would come to visit him, but at time passed they had to get back to their lives. Kanya was the only person that came everyday for all those weeks without fail. Malika came everyday too but couldn't say long because she had to get back to Big D.
Today, Kanya had brought a picture that she hadn't thought of bringing before. On the table right next to Ranbir's bed there rested an intricately designed, gold colored frame, and in that frame was a wedding picture of Ranbir and Kanya. It really was a nice picture that was taken after they had come to Nanda house. The smiles on their faces were plastered on and they were fake because theirs was a contract marriage. As Kanya looked at the picture, she couldn't help but smile; so much had changed…for the better. She looked over at Ranbir and began doing the first of the two rounds of physical therapy she did with him. As she worked, she talked to him.
K- Jaante ho, aaj maine aqua blue color ki sari pehni hai. Woh kaal Mummy ji bata rahi thi ke woh color tumeh bohot pasand hai. Unhone yeh bhi bataya ke tumhara favorite color green hai. Pere paas toh green sari nahin hai, varnaa main woh hi pehnti. (she continued the exercise) Ek kaam karte hai, jaab tum tik hojaoge taab hum ek saath shopping challenge. Tum hi mere liyeh ek aachi si green sari pasand kar lena. Color tumhare pasand ka hai, toh sari bhi tumhari pasand ki hogi. Kaisa laga mera idea? (Do you know, today I have a aqua blue colored sari. Mummy ji was telling me yesterday that this is one of your favorite colors. She also told me that your favorite color is green. I don't have a green sari, or else I would have worn that. How about we do one thing, when you get better we will go shopping together. You can pick a nice green sari for me. The color is your choice so the sari should be too. How is my idea?)
A few hours had passed with Ranbir when Kanya's cell began to ring. She rummaged through her purse as she looked for the phone, she knew it had to be her mom. She answered it but the line got cut. She tried calling the number back but it didn't work, she kept getting the busy signal. Then she noticed that the signal on her phone was really weak, so she thought she would go outside and try it. She wanted to get Ranbir repositioned before she left so she moved to do that first.
"Kanya?" someone called out behind her. As she turned she saw who it was and at the very same moment she turned back around to Ranbir.
K- Tum yahaan kya kaar rahe ho Chunnu? Maine kitni baar kahaa hai ke mujhe tumse koi baath nahin karni. (What are you doing here Chunnu? I have told you so many times that I don't want to talk to you.)
C- Kanya woh…woh… (Kanya umm…umm…)
K- Aab yeh 'woh woh' kya laga rake ho. Kya hua? (What is all this 'umm'? What is the matter?)
C- Woh, Pammi aunty tumhe call karne ki kosish kaar rahi thi. (Umm, Pammi aunty was trying to call you.)
K- Paata hai, main baad mein phone kar lungi. (I know that, I will call her later.)
C- Woh yahin hospital mein hai. (She is actually here in the hospital.)
That did it, that got Kanya to stop ignoring him; she finally turned to face him.
K- Mamma hospital mein hai, kyun? Kya hua? (Mamma is in the hospital, why? What happened?)
C- Woh Adita Di… (Umm…Adita Di…)
K- Di? Kya hua Di ko? (Di? What happened to Di?)
C- Woh achanak unke pet mein dard hone laga, toh hum unhe hospital le aaye. (She suddenly had pain in her stomach, so we brought her here.)
K- Kahaan hai woh log…mujhe abhi jaana hai. (Where are they…I have to go now.)
C- Woh, second floor mein hai…maternity ward mein. (Umm, they are on the second floor…maternity ward.)
Kanya made a dash for the door but stopped just before she stepped out. She turned back and looked into the room.
K- Ranbir (she whispered)
C- Tum chinta maat karo. Tum Di ke paas jaao, main Ranbir ke paas rukta hoon. (Kanya hesitated) Don't worry, nurses bhi hai…tum jaao. (You don't have to worry. You go to Di, I will stay with Ranbir. Don't worry, the nurses are here too…you go ahead.)
Kanya nodded her head as she rushed out of the door and towards the elevator, but not before telling the nurses to keep a close eye on Ranbir while she was out.
Kanya didn't know how but hours had passed since she had been with Ranbir; everything was passing in a blur. Adita was already taken into an exam room when Kanya reached the maternity ward. Pammi was standing outside with Suhaas and both of there were stricken with fear. An hour later the doctor said that they were still running tests and they would know soon if everything was alright. The family was worried because Adita was already in her 5th month and what worried them more was the fact that Adita had already suffered a miscarriage a year and a half ago. That is why, for this pregnancy, they didn't tell the family until Adita had passed her first trimester. They all prayed for the well being of Adita and the unborn baby. It was a while later when the doctor said that everything seemed alright but that they wanted to keep her over night just to be on the safe side.
Pammi couldn't leave Adita at the hospital in such a state and go home to take care of Anand and Harpal; so it was up to Kanya. Kanya didn't have a choice but to go. She called up Malika and explained the situation; Malika assured her that she would come to stay with Ranbir. Then and only then did Kanya go home. What she didn't know was that Ranbir's doctor was looking for her…he had something to discuss with her.
Kanya didn't return to the hospital until later that evening. When she walked in to Ranbir's room she was already dead tired but she had to see him again.
K- Mummy ji woh…(she stopped in her tracks) Tum? (Mummy ji I…You?)
C- Woh, Malika aunty ko ghaar jaana pada kyun ke Big D ki tabiyat achanak bigad gayi thi. Koi aur nahin tha issi liyeh main ruk gaya tha. (Malika anuty ahd to go home because Big D suddenly fell ill. There was no one else so I had to stay.)
K- Oh, thanks.
C- Main thoda dehr aur rukta hoon, tum jaake doctor se baath kaar lo, tumhe doond rahe the. (I will stay for a bit longer, you go talk to the doctors, they were looking for you.)
K- Doctor?
C- Haan…jaao. (Yes…go.)
K- Main…abhi aayi. (I'll be right back.)
Kanya hesitantly walked out of the room towards the nurse's station to have the doctor paged. Kanya stood at the desk not knowing what news was coming her way.
