Kripa was very tired. Though she was angry and was having a severe headache, she fell asleep. Angad was furious. He knew he had gone off the limit but he didn't want to admit that to her. He clenched his jaws as he remembered the events of the evening.
It was raining hard. Angad had turned off the music when he saw Kripa sleeping peacefully.
After quite a while, they had stopped at a traffic light. Angad just glanced over to look at Kripa; he was angry at himself but angrier at her. He didn't know the reason but all he knew was that he was furious at her.
He couldn't help but think that if he had met her before while she was in the same state as she was in then, that is: sleeping. He was sure he would have thought that she looked innocent, nave, soft, fragileā¦He couldn't bring himself to admit that he would also have thought that she was pretty as well. And definitely beautiful.
But no. He had seen her, spent almost a whole day with her. Even if she was kind, soft, innocent and all, she was also arrogant, mean, weird and stupid too.
He got annoyed when he suddenly heard so many different kinds and volumes of horns beeping outside. They distracted him. He turned to look at the cars behind his car. He saw a few drivers' faces outside their respective car windows. They were screaming and shouting. He got more annoyed. He muttered under his breathe while he turned back around in his seat 'What the hell is wrong with them! Puri (The whole) duniya aaj pagal ho gayi hai kya!'
He still stood there, looking here and there, getting weird looks from some drivers also as they passed him. But the ones who were behind him never stopped shouting. 'Chup kar jao. Apna galla (lung) phar (broken <damage>) do-ge.' he thought to himself.
He suddenly noticed that they had been there for a long time. He turned to look at the traffic light. It was yellow and then it went red. 'Oh s***! Maine puri (whole) traffic ko roka hua tha. And now the stupid thing has gone red again.' He banged his head on the steering wheel a few times. He glanced over at Kripa and muttered 'It's all because of her! She distracted meā¦' He stopped himself from saying more. He didn't want to think that she had distracted him.
Finally after a few moments, the traffic light became green and he drove away.
He was driving when suddenly the car jerked over some kind of big rock, causing both Angad and Kripa to fall forward a little. Angad quickly turned to look at Kripa if she was okay. She was. Thank god the seatbelt was across her chest. Kripa had fallen back to her seat. But Kripa began to stir. He glanced over at her a few times as he drove his car, she was waking up gradually.
She opened her eyes slowly. The very first thing she saw was Angad. He wasn't looking at her. He was driving the car. He was concentrating on the road. She frowned. She didn't want to see his face. He reminded her of the horrible day she just had!
She had been having a beautiful dream. In which she was dreaming that she was having an awesome time with someone special at the wedding she was going to attend a few days later. But when she woke up and saw him. Her mood had changed again. She was furious. She straightened herself and sat straight. Angad looked at her. He could see that she was fully awake then. And the arrogance still not gone. 'She was better when sleeping!' he told himself.
The air between them was charged with anger. Again.
Angad didn't know why but he was getting angrier now especially because she was awake now. Kripa also felt that she was getting more furious for no particular reason. No, that's wrong. She hated the man sitting next to her. That was a reasonable reason she reminded herself.
It was still raining heavily outside.
After 15 minutes, they reached the street where Kripa lived in. There was no apartment building in sight. There were only bungalows all around. He was driving slowly now because he was reading the plate numbers on each door, on both sides of the car, as they passed. He didn't want to ask Kripa.
Kripa didn't wait. She opened the door and went out. It was raining and she didn't want to listen to Angad's lecture in case if he just started though she wasn't expecting him to after what happened on the way home so she started running.
Angad realized it later when she had gone a few yards away already. Frustrated he opened his door and angrily told himself 'Yeh ladki bhiā¦kash yeh din kabhi meri kismet meinā¦' he didn't continue. He had gotten busy in getting her bags from the backseat. He was also angry because she hadn't closed the door when she left. He closed the doors of the car quickly and locked them. He ran in the direction in which Kripa was running in. Her house was pretty far from where they had started running from. Finally somewhere Kripa turned and walked up to the porch. She pressed the bell and waited.
Kripa's mood was off. She tried her best to compose her posture before anyone opened the door.
When the door started opening, Kripa heard someone running. She looked behind and saw a figure in the distant. It was dark so she couldn't see who it was. She turned back quickly only to be greeted by her mother.
Gayatri was shocked to see Kripa like that. On top of it all, Kripa was smiling.
Gayatri looked at Kripa concerned 'Kripa, yeh tujhe kya hua hai? Yeh kya halat banayi hui hai tune? Aur bags kaha haiā¦' Kripa's eyes widen 'S***! I forgot them in the car!' she thought. Gayatri continued 'ā¦aur Angad kaha haiā¦' before she could say something more, they both turned around to look at the person who had just interrupted them 'Main yaha hoon.'
Gayatri looked shocked again 'Beta yeh tum ne kya halat banayi hui hai?'
Angad looked at Gayatri with a smile and quickly glanced at Kripa to which she turned her gaze elsewhere. 'Aunty actually, bohut daer (late) ho gayi thi. Kripa ko fikr (worry/ tension) thi ke kahin aap aur uske papa kahin worried na ho gaye ho. Toh issi liye jab hum iss street per ponche (reached), Kripa jaldi se gari se nikal ke baagne lagi. Woh apne bags bhi bhool (forgot) aayi toh phir mein bhi bags lekar uske peeche bagne laga.' He ended with a small laugh.
Kripa looked at him. He knew she was looking at him. But he didn't glance at her. She was surprised that he did that for her. She hadn't thought what her parents would have thought if she reached home in that condition. When her mother had asked her and then Angad about it all, she had no clue about what to say. Angad had saved herā¦helped her. But she wasn't going to be grateful to him. Not after the stupid prank his idiotic mind had planned.
Gayatri shook her head and then started to giggle 'Tum dono pagal ho. Bahar barish ho rahi hai, late toh ho hi sakhte the. Aur waise bhi Angad tha tumhare saath Kripa, toh mujhe pareshaan honi ki kya zaroorat thi.' Kripa wanted to roll her eyes at that she muttered inside her head 'Phir Angad! Aur koi duniya mein nahin hai kya?' Angad could sense that she was muttering something as her mother complimented him. She wasn't happy with the compliments her mother was giving him. He had been with her for at least 6 hours, he knew her that much at least by then. It was evident on her face to him at least if not her mother.
He was very furious or else he would have smirked. He was in no such kind of mood at that moment.
Gayatri talked to Angad for a while. Suddenly Gayatri remembered something 'Main bhi kitni bewakoof hoon, beta andar aao. Waise bhi bahar barish ho rahi hai.' They were standing under the shade of the entrance but it was raining heavily and besides Angad's car was at the other end of the street. He would get more wet if he went at that moment.
Angad smiled and shook his head 'Nahin aunty, it's okay. Mujhe kahin jana bhi hai. Thora kaam hai warna main zaroor andar ata.'
Gayatri tried to persuade him while Kripa looked bored. They exchanged the contact details. Gayatri was grateful to him that he had brought her daughter home safely. She wanted to invite him home someday. Angad handed the bags back to Gayatri. As Gayatri was going back in the house she whispered in Kripa's ears 'Thanks agar nahin bola toh abhi bol-le.' Gayatri smiled and nodded at Kripa and went back in the house.
Kripa turned around. Angad glanced at her and was about to leave. Kripa didn't know what to do, her mother had said something. She had no good reason to disobey her mother at that moment. At least no good reason according to her mother if her mother knew. She looked at his back as he was leaving. She looked elsewhere and called out 'Angad.'
Angad stopped. He was a little surprised that she, Kripa Sharma, had stopped him. And why? He turned around to look at her with a raised eyebrow. His complexion still showed anger. She wasn't looking his way and she was calling him? 'I think that's typical of Miss Kripa Sharma!' he muttered under his breathe.
Kripa still didn't look his way 'Thanks for dropping me home!'
Angad's eyebrows raised in amusement. He started walking backwards in the heavy rain. He put his hands in his jean pockets. He didn't know if he would meet her in the future, he didn't know if he wanted to or not. But surely he'd come to her home when her mother would invite him but will she be home at that time too? He didn't know. He was walking away from her. She was looking at him. He was looking at her. Then he spoke out loud enough for her to hear before he turned around and sprinted in the rain towards his car 'You are welcome, Modern Basanti!'
When he saw the expression on her face, he forgot everything about the ride to her home. He smirked when he saw her mouth open in shock when he addressed her by that name. He started running.
Kripa stood there, under the shade outside the entrance door to her house. She looked at Angad who was running towards his car at the far end of the street. She was stunned that he dared to grin like that after the events of the evening! And how dare he call him "Basanti" and not only "Basanti" but he called her "Modern Basanti".
