“SILs” & Glow in the dark objects

He drove her home

She sat up in shock

“I don’t think it’s a good idea”

“You did not pick a place you specifically said “I am fine I can eat wherever” he turned to her with a taunt

“Umm.. I… you are a lawyer I forgot”

“You forgot, you don’t think of me at night… I am dealing with a lot here” he laughed under his breath

She smiled the most charming way

“You make it sound like Ive destroyed you” she said innocently

And realized what she just said

He had opened her door and held it open

“Shall we?” he requested, offering a hand

“Thanks” “I didn’t bring anything if it was going to be at home” “Your home” she mumbled

“You are fine” he said sidling up close walking with her through the front entryway

As usual, like most rich peoples’ homes are, there was no one in sight, just a luxurious Italian/French villa like home waiting to be occupied

“Do you want to eat first and walk it off or walk first?”

“I am wearing jootis I can walk as far and wide” she smiled

He stared at her bejweled orange jootis

“Nicee” he sighed

“I better take them off” she mumbled going over to the side

“We don’t…” he muttered

“Its fine I do”

Satyen approached

“Welcome Ms Mathur”

She turned bright pink… she realized she had given him a big lecture over how they only had a professional connection

“Hello Mr Parashar”

She bend down and did a polite namaste

“Aaj to ek hug banta hai beta” he said firmly “Waise aaj aapne apni hand crafted sarees nahi pehani?”

She accepted it awkwardly “I will make sure I do next time” she laughed

“Its hard to see young people have good taste in clothes” Satyen nodded

“Welcome… what brings you here?” he asked as if he didn’t know

“Umm.. I… my parents too I guess received a proposal for.. from your son, I was supposed to talk over it last week but had to head home” she said with all the calmness she could muster

He stared at her dumbfounded at her remarkable maturity

“Aapne kya socha hai?” he needled her

“Umm… bahut kuch but I thought we can talk it out?”

“Isko aapse achhi ladki kaha milegi? You are way out of his reach” he said proudly

“Thanks Dad…” Raanav waved from a distance taking a call

“Well enjoy the meal, the help are busy making Italian I think” “Don’t knock the idea before you taste it…. One of them spent two years in a remote town in Procida, Campania “ he laughed out loud

“I am not picky… Mr Parashar I could probably not even tell if its not truly authentic” she smiled her eyes glittering

They were guided to the courtyard

Viveka was extremely nervous on the inside, as to when she will come F2F with Smrita

She had no courage or confidence to speak with her after what Naina had done

Kalyani ran out trying to look for something

“Did you say YES? Ms Mathur?” she was shocked “You are not wearing a sareeeeeeeeeeee… bruh”

“sorry… Why Ms Mathur?”

Viveka laughed at how the whole family worried about her saree wearing

“Oh? Umm.. no… not… no” she shook her head and looked at Raanav

“Yeah everyone knows” he said

“Can I call you SIL?” she giggled “I mean only when you say yes?”

Girls these days lived in Western culture on SM, and on it young girls used every word possible from the Urban Dictionary

“You want to use that term so bad” Viveka burst out laughing

“I am going to go buy stuff for Rakhi tomorrow I leave at 4 PM in the afternoon… see you in a bit… EEEEKS” she jumped up and hugged Viveka and ran off

“Walk first?” she turned to Raanav

The weather was gorgeous, always a few degrees cooler in the tree lined central delhi avenues

“A bit?”

He sat down and stretched

The help wheeled cart after cart of appys

She told him about how it was, filling in for Mrs Gulati who was on leave

Talked about Rakhi traditions with Bua’s kids and Mamaji’s son and Anil Chachu’s kids

“My brothers keep it on the whole year” she said noticing Raanav’s wrist to be bare

“I don’t usually.. I leave it for a month”

“How was your trip?”

“I like it” he shrugged

“Do you have an office?”

“Yeah the company employes 470? Team members over there?” he mumbled

“Are you like one of the TV shows?”

“No I am not” he flashed a smile just in sheer disbelief that she sat across from him on a gorgeous monsoon evening under the glass dome in his courtyard asking him how close he was to a TV lawyer

“Ive never had to argue so theatrically in fact” he muttered

“Oh”

“I read a lot… build a good case and wrap it up” he said quietly “All you need is good understanding and interpretation of the law, communication skills, as a Financial, M&A attorney I just need to know the art of the debate, persuasion… (he paused letting that sink in for a bit)

Watched in satisfaction as slow color crept up her face “hedging financial instruments, international business transaction detail… that’s about it”

Something about the steely resolve sent chills down her spine

He would be a horrible adversary to have

“Sounds mind boggling” she mumbled “Uff” glass push up

“same” he smiled slowly reminding her what he thought of her work

“I work with a bunch of skilled poor people that want to be heard and want to thrive”

“Just remove poor” he laughed

“I cant eat any dinner” she sat back

“Lets go for a walk, he extended his arm

She didn’t accept it but got up and walked alongside him as they began to walk down Aurangazeb Rd

“I really like your Dad Raanav” she said breathlessly as she kept pace with his stride

He paused and turned to look at her

“You’ve not said my name before, but did now to tell me about my Dad” he smiled

“Ah”

“I happen to like him a bit” he laughed

“I am unprepared to join the family” she said quietly

“What prep would you need?” he asked

“You know… understand the dynamics of the family… I don’t need any prep for a umm.. family of my social standing” she said

He walked leisurely now looking at just how gorgeous and articulate she was

“what would that be?”

“You know…. I probably eat pasta with my fingers if its like a tube… you know what is it called… umm whatever”

“Rigatoni” he said softly

“Yeah its so cheesy I blow the cheese out of it”

He laughed

“I just take it easy, I would eat street food and don’t have lounge clothes and don’t get my hair done professionally, except the cut and trim every 2 months”

“Kalyani would be shocked”

“She knows already Viveka… she doesn’t care”

“But she lives in Germany” “I”

“I don’t think my mother has any choice in this matter… “ he stole her thought

The breeze picked up indicating rain in the horizon

“In fact one of our fave things to do on rainy evenings is samosa jilebi and chai… in the balcony”

“That sounds delicious” he said

“I don’t want you to covet a shiny object and later find out she doesn’t even glow” she said

There is no fuss, no games, no coyness....Raanav will be very lucky if he can get such an unspoiled partner for life.

A little bit…☺️

“In fact one of our fave things to do on rainy evenings is samosa jilebi and chai… in the balcony”

“That sounds delicious” he said

“I don’t want you to covet a shiny object and later find out she doesn’t even glow” she said

Do you always downgrade yourself or am I special?” he paused and asked her straight

“I just feel this whole thing is so… awkward…”

“I assure you its normal” he said smoothly

They walked for an hour atleast… 8, 10 blocks talking about his most challenging cases and she talked about why the Ph D admission was like pulling teeth

She leaned on the nearest tree and watched branches of other trees sway at a distance

“I haven’t told my parents about what happened with Naina” she said quietly

He tucked his hands in his pockets and just listened

“This was one of my Ma’s worst night mare” she explained “My parents raised us all to be self confident and accomplished, but never reckless and … umm.. stupid… you know”

“I shouldn’t have told you” he said

“No.. I am glad you did”

“Eh”

“Our parents… I should say maybe your Mom and my Ma haven’t actually hit it off if you noticed” she smiled and winked

He adored that wink, he told himself he would remember it the rest of his life

A car passed by and honked loudly, uncouth Delhi men expressing their slimy pleasure of couples they did not know

“Lets turn around” he muttered grimly

“Do you run every morning?”

“When Rakshit is in town… then yes… most definitely”

“If he isn’t?”

“Then Dad wants me to have a car trail me” he said

She froze in shock

“WHY?”

“There was some threat from an employees’ union in Yavatmal once, some loon made it to Delhi and tried to run me off the sidewalk one morning like 19? Months ago?”

Her face paled… nobody middle class would ever be under a life threat

“Goodness!! “What the…” her mind voice screamed

She swallowed

“This is crazy stuff Raanav” she groaned stopping “Were you terrified?”

“Umm.. a bit?” he admitted and nodded

Her heart pounded like a sledgehammer in anxiety and uncertainty

The thought of him laying bloody on a Delhi sidewalk unnoticed at 4 AM made her sick to her stomach

“As a parent he has the gift of exaggeration” he laughed

“I wouldn’t have to deal with this if I marry a regular guy… only *I* might want to kill him if he bought bhindi that was touch to dice.. or forgot to turn off the gas when the milk was steaming” she sounded agitated and troubled

He speculated if she was a “little bit” invested in this relationship now

The thought alone made him delirious

Oh! How she would worry

He laughed at her sense of humor

“You would kill him huh?”

“Have you tried to chop touch bhindi?” “It tears up like strings” “The seeds are the size of my head”

She was damn serious

They walked quietly

“When Ma goes intl I worry about the plane trip… I cant… I don’t know how it will be weekly” she expressed her ever fear

“You could go with me” he offered

“Oh… no… umm.. no” she declined

They entered the property and continued walking the well trimmed velvety green lawn with low walkway lights

“I never imagined a life for me behind these gates…. We have driven by a million times” she sighed staring at the house, the lights were all around the property placed on the ground looking up, the white column mansion shimmered like a jewel

“Now you know” he smiled

“We disagree on our politics on our every opinion of society and people” she said quietly

“ Have you never played with flammable objects?” he asked silkily looking down into her eyes flirtatiously

“No… not if they are men” she said primly not going where he was going

He burst out into loud laughter

“I better go” she whispered

They went in, he had wanted to show her his room

He walked her over there

She stood speechless (description soon)

“Do economists understand the term spontaneity?” he quizzed his eyes dancing with amusement as he turned toward her pinning her on the wall with his gaze☺️

“What do you mean?” she crinkled her eyes in her signature confusion, pushing her glasses up, her eyes suddenly displaying the realization of what he meant

“I am not sure why they all want you in a saree… but I want you in a saree because I can hold your bare waist when I kiss you” he whispered on her cheek

She began to vibrate in fear ready to crash land on the marble floor as he held her waist firmly in both hands

“Raanav what…” he held her chin and bend down thoughtfully

“Lets make this thing work Viveka Mathur… every attempt you make to convince me I am a terrible choice… makes me want to entice you more” he groaned

“You are incredibly gorgeous Raanav… I am so lost when I am around you” she gasped for air turning sideways hoping there will somehow appear a magical plume of fresh oxygen

“If I tell you you can beat me up if I ever hurt you will that help?” he looked deeply into her eyes
