Hi 👋🏽 it’s nice to see you here, yes I closed off liability first of its kind where I left one part way might try to pick it up again. But I have this and I also have “opposites attract” and “possession of love” which I’m trying to keep running.
So please have a read so good to have you back. I’ll collect a new list of those to pm. Keep in touch as I’ve got another instalment of bitter sweet in mind. I’d like to get the current three in a good place first.
Chapter 6
Feeling as if he was certainly disturbing something Arnav apologizes for interrupting.
“Nk it’s getting late, set up the guest room for Jenifer.” He asks of him.
“Ji bhai” NK leaves Khushi and Arnav in one space.
“Is everything alright?” He says based on the last few moments as he walks towards the kitchen
counter next to her for his meds.
Nahin, Who theek nahin hai” (She’s not right for this family)
He understands, he’d seen her reservations throughout the night.
“we’ll help her fit in “ he says gently with sure eyes.
And she gets only part way with her words “Dadi aur di kabhi..”
before she can finish he jumps in. “This will go my way Khushi because I’ve given them both my
word that they’re apart of my family. I’d choose NK over Dadi every time just like I chose you.
She heard him yet wasn’t sure he understood the implications of what he was saying..
“Aap Nahin samjenge” she throws out before walking off defeated by his conviction.
…..
As he walks into their bedroom watching the back of Khushi shuffling clothes around in a drawer he
knew keeping herself busy was what she did when she was unhappy with him.
“I’m sorry..” he says for sounding abrupt In the kitchen, her opinion did matter.
“Don’t be, aap vahin karenge joh aap chahte hai.” (you’ll only to as you please anyway.) she
responds closing the drawer and walking in his direction now but not to him.
“I thought we had a rule, we only talk about ‘us’ in the bedroom” he did enjoy seeing her
annoyed..when she looked at him she realized it was true. First thing they did after marriage was decide
some things and one of them was to only ever talk about each other and their marriage in their
bedroom. No family matters, no business, nothing.
Something about that little reminder made her smile.
She walked towards the French doors and looked outside at the poolside. That is where they had spent
most of their first night, making promises to each other, talking about their dreams.
He came over and held her hand, she looked down at her hand in his and then into his eyes. He was the
same man he had been that day and she loved him for it.
“Go on say It” he encourages as he knows she wants to say something to him.
A old moment comes back to the forefront of her mind:
Flashback:
“Arnav do you want more rice!?” Khushi says fairly loudly as she serves the family food on her very
first day in Raizada house. His fathers, Nani’s, Dadi’s eyes shoot up towards Khushi and look at one
another like something bad had just happened.
“Hamare yaha pati ka naam nahin leti, besharmi hoti hai. (we don’t address elders by their names)
“I’m sorry”, says Khushi looking at Arnav the once to ask him to help her and he does just not in the
way he had hoped.
“I’ve got no problem with it, infact I like it, carry on Khushi” he says proudly to which his fathers
voice silences everyone.
Traditions are traditions he says in a weighted tone.
Khushi upset by the upset she had caused walks into the kitchen.
A lone tear strays her eyes, it was so different here in his home. They were more sophisticated and
somewhat royal maybe she didn’t fit in and that was that.
A moment later she feels a touch upon her shoulder. Turns back to see Arnav, I’m so annoyed he
grunts madly, she stops him from getting angry.
“It’s okay I’ll just go back to calling you sir.. at least in front of others, Ma does it then I can
too.” She says with sadness.
“It’s a backwards step Khushi, we are making strides in our relationship and this is taking us
back.”
He was right but it was all so fragile she wanted to win hearts not break them.
End of Flashback
“Kya soch rahin ho khushi..?” (What are you thinking?) – Arnav calls her back into the present
moment before she can say anything he there is a knock at the door.
They both look towards the door and see Jenifer, ASR invites her in.
I was hoping Khushi could help me please. Khushi is a little surprised but nods.
NK says were all going to the temple tomorrow morning, I wondered if you would help me put on a
saari please.
Arnav was pleasantly surprised whilst she was just a surprised in general. Agreeing maybe not
wholeheartedly but because it wasn’t a bad thing she nodded her head.
Thank you said Jenifer and wished them goodnight.
Soon as she leaves Arnav takes Khushi’s mellowed down state to his advantage and pulls her closer for
romance.
She hesitates for a second and falls into the charming trap of his which reminds her that the nursery in
their new house needed children otherwise it was pointless.
…
Next morning, most of the family are preparing to go to the temple because today was a special day it
was Khushi’s birthday. Pari had her gift for her badima, as did Akaash and Nk, Anjali and dadi had
sent theirs through the post and the phone had rung a few times this morning whilst Khushi tired to
complete her morning prayers in Raizada prayer room.
Like one would Khushi wore a beautiful saari, their was a special touch to appearance today. She had
to light and relight a lot of candles for the phone calls to wish her good morning seemed non stop.
Her mother, her bua, Anjali, Dadi, Nani, Payal.
Once she gets through her prayer like every year she had asked for something personal, something for
her loved ones and something for the broader good of others. Today she prayed for NK’s happiness.
Walking out the puja room with her prashad thali she takes into the lounge before she reaches it Pari
runs up to her and grabs her .. she can only reach so far but she wants to wish her Badi ma happy
birthday.
Khushi squats to little pari’s level and thanks her. – Pari places a little kiss on her cheek something had
definitely learnt from her bade papa thinks Khushi and watches her run away.
NK, hugs his bhabi, Akaash passes her the present from himself and Pari.
It was always lovely to see loved ones gather around. Jenifer wished her happy birthday too.
All those that were important to her but Arnav had already greeted her.
He’d forgotten but she didn’t want to tell them that as they’d make a huge fuss.
“What did Bhai get you this year asks NK?” which is apt timing as Arnav walks down the staircase and
drawers their attention.
Him being on his phone and dressed in office attire makes the family suspicious but Khushi simply
watches him get to the bottom of the stairs and then call the driver.
She takes a few steps towards him even though he looks busy and most possibly late for something.
“Suniyey, rukiyey na ek minute”. (listen, could you wait a moment) she asks him with that Puja plate
to hand.
ASR’s mind is too busy to even notice shes dressed differently today. he focuses on listening to her
rather than seeing her as he’s checking his wallet for something important.
“I know aap ko yey sab pasand nahin hai par ghar ke baki bade sab bahar hai”
(“I know you don’t approve of all this you don’t like it but the rest of the elders are away”) she
explains, he looks at her a glance and then watches her bend to touch his feet .
That is when he realizes that he has obviously forgotten something important.
As khushi reaches his feet, Arnav looks towards the kids in the lounge who look at him angrily.
They have no choice but to trace the words BIRTHDAY to him without Khushi hearing.
“Oh shit ..” – he thinks, and picks her up at once feeling terrible but not letting it look worse on his
expression.
His eyes however are expressive, expressive once they see his wife, beautiful, devoted loving.
“Happy birthday jaan ..” he says pulling her closer he kisses her on the cheek and then the forehead.
“Make a wish and its yours” he tells her .
Will you come to mandir with me?, She asks knowing he’d forgotten and so he probably had meetings
this morning.
“Sure he says with a smile”
At a distance the Kids look on, Jenifier astonished at how beautiful a couple the two of them were.
…
Not only the morning ASR took the day of as he ought to for her but before they could go to the temple
Jenifer needed help putting on Saari as promised Khushi couldn’t say no not today.
Jenifer stood in the middle of the guest from she was stopping in whilst Khushi wrapped her in a saari.
It was printed pink saari with floral patterns. It looks nice on her skin. Khushi was obviously a pro at
this, as she pleated the saari Jennifer was keen to make friends with Khushi.
“I hear you calling ASR “Sahab?” all the time, Jenifer’s use of Hindi was good but it had funny
nuances that sometimes were wrong.
“That’s because I used to work for him ..but also because tradition in this house is not to use your
husbands name it’s regarded disrespectful.”
“You respect him a lot don’t you as does he you,” says Jenifer.
“He’s a lot older than I am, he’s looked after me, loved me no matter what,I think that calls for
respect don’t you.”
Jenifer nods.
“How did you two meet, I asked him but he said I should ask you?”
Khushi looks at her with a smile, she thought she would never talk about such personal things to such
strangers but today she felt open.
“I would make his lunches, I did the catering for the office, he’d get a sugar free and health
conscious meal every day and I would deliver it.”
“I’d wait outside his office until he was finished, weeks past like that, he realized he didn’t like
eating alone so he invited me into the office to wait”
“We’d talk about food to begin with, then family.”
“He fell in love with me first I would say, I found thank you notes in the lunch boxes when
washing up and one time when I made something he hated he asked me out for lunch.”
Jenifer smiled as did Khushi.
The saari was nearly done, Khushi asked Jenifer to turn around to tuck in particular fold and continued
telling her their story.
“It got to a point where I wanted to ask my hand in marriage, he proposed in the office one lunch
time and I told him he had to ask my father.”
They both laughed.
“All else is history” – says a sound at the door, when the woman turn they see Arnav at the door
smiling.
Khushi..dips her eyes a second whilst ASR teases her with his gaze.
…
Next chapter: Arnav gets a call from Dadi whilst he waits outside the mandir for the ladies telling him
she is on her way home sooner than expected.
